Title: Frozen Friendship
POV: Third Person
Rating: K+
Chapter: 1/1
Summary: Phoenix Wright befriends a cashier
Writers Note: So this is definitely a gift fic for a lovely friend of mine for our anniversary or friendship. She loves herself some spikey-haired lawyer so here you go! I also tried to show time / scenery acceleration using line breaks and horizontal lines but I’m not sure how well it’ll show up! Also I pushed this out of the queue a little bit early because she was feeling a sad.
The young man standing in front of the cashier looked as if he hadn’t slept in weeks, judging by the pajama pants and old white t-shirt that drooped on his sulking body. He let his armful of energy drinks crash onto the counter, bending over so he could dig into his pocket.
“Tough week?” The young woman asked quietly.
The young man blew air through his lips. “You have no idea. It’s my first week of exams and I’m terrified.”
She grabbed a drink and ran it across her scanner. When it beeped, the boy flinched at the loud sound. “You’ve gotta be careful with these you know... you’re already jumpy.”
“I’ll be fine. How much is the total?”
“Thirteen dollars and thirty nine cents. Would you like a bag?”
He dragged a twenty dollar bill out of his pocket and handed it to the girl. “Yeah, I think that’d be a good idea, huh.”
She finished up his transaction and handed him his change. He yawned when he stuffed the bills and coins in his pocket and waited with droopy eyes while she bagged his items.
“Thank you for stopping in. Good luck with your exams.” The girl smiled brightly and handed him the bag. “Be careful with those things.”
“Thank you. But honestly at this point the last thing that I’m worried about killing me is a liquid.”
“Excuse me, Are you the girl from the other night?”
The cashier pushed the last box of cigarettes that she had in her hands into the dispenser. Recognizing the voice, she turned around and smiled. “Welcome back! Come for more sugar highs?”
He smirked and placed his hands on the counter. “Not today! I finished my last exam a few hours ago and now I’m about to head home for break. But I thought I’d stop in and get something to take with me.”
“It’s kinda late to be driving home, isn’t it?”
The boy shrugged. “I’m always careful. Besides, there’s not as much traffic at night. Are you planning on scolding me every time I come in here?”
The girl giggled and looked him up and down. He pulled himself together a lot better when he wasn’t drowning in stress. His pajama pants were replaced with a pair of dark jeans and his oversized, drool-stained shirt had been exchanged for a tighter fitting, clean blue tee. His eyes were bright and hopeful, making his whole face radiate with cheer. And his hair... Was it always styled like that?
“I didn’t catch your name last time. Is it Lily?”
The girl stood back, a confused expression slapped onto her face. “Huh? How did you...”
The boy pointed to her chest. “The nametag? I only ask because sometimes people put different names on there...” The boy was embarrassed at her extreme reaction.
“No I’m sorry I just sometimes get some creeps in here that try to bug me when I’m working you know? And since I work the late shift it makes me scared...” Lily reached to rub her arm, guilt crawling onto her face and tinting her cheeks pink. “But yes... my name is Lily. And you?”
His frown quickly morphed into a smile. He placed his hands on his sides and stood proudly, projecting his answer firmly. “My name is Phoenix. Phoenix Wright!”
“I’ve gotta admit, that’s a pretty cool name. Phoenixes are amazing birds. Do you plan on rising from the ashes in magic school or something?”
“Oh no. I can’t do magic. I am actually pursuing a degree in art with my friend Larry. He’s probably been one of the creeps hitting on you. But I’m also considering a law degree.” Phoenix put his hand up and scratched behind his head nervously. “I know... kind of a weird mix.”
Lily leaned forward onto the counter. “It maybe weird but I mean... it’s better than nothing, you know? I hope you succeed in whatever you reach for, Phoenix Wright.”
A genuine smile and slight blush snuck onto his face. “Thanks, Lily. Before I head out, can I get a slushy?”
“Of course! What flavors? You can do just one or multiple layers of whatever we have available.”
“Hmm...” Phoenix leaned forward and examined the board’s list of flavors, grasping his chin in thought. “How about... Blueberry on the bottom, lime in the middle, and cherry on top?”
“Ooh, good selection! The lime is my favorite, the flavor packs a serious punch.”
“Don’t take too long, Feenie! I have an early class tomorrow.” The girl dressed in a pink frilly dress and holding a pink parasol floated her way from the bathroom and out the front entrance, leaving the doorbell ring to be the only sound filling the room. A flowery aura followed her out the door, leaving a cold feeling when she was gone.
“That’s my Dollie! Isn’t she adorable?”
Lily stood by the register, staring blankly at Phoenix. “Feenie?”
“Yeah! It’s a cute nickname, yeah?”
She smiled gently at the huge change in demeanor since the last time she saw him. He looked as if he was a child that was living in a world where all they could see was candy and toys. He wore a pink sweater with a P stitched over a heart. If it were possible for him to actually glow, he would be glowing rainbows and sunshine. “I mean I guess?”
“I thought so too!” He leaned forward and stared at the list again. “You know... I think I’ll have what I had last time. Go ahead and get me blueberry, lime, and cherry. If you could!”
“What’s up, stranger? Long time no see!”
Phoenix slumped over to the register. Not only was the peachy aura around him gone, but he went back to looking as if he hadn’t slept in months again. His eyes were puffy and the light in them had gone dull, his clothes were old and dirty, and his spikey hair slumped as if it, too, were crying.
“Yeah... I kinda forgot what things were like before... her...” He flinched as he said the last word. “Sorry I didn’t come in and stuff...” He pulled himself away from the counter and groaned, heading towards the freezer. After collecting three containers of ice cream, he walked back over to the counter and dropped them down.
Lily looked down at the pile of ice cream, then picked her gaze back up to the boy. She put two and two together quickly, trying not to laugh at his feminine ways of handling what she assumed to be a breakup. She opened her mouth to playfully tease him, but when a deep heavy sigh escaped his lips, she turned around and headed towards the slushy machine.
“Here...” She handed him a tall clear cup with three layers: blue, green, and red. “It’s on the house.”
Phoenix looked up at her in the eyes for the first time since he arrived, a look of thankfulness and understanding reflecting in his eyes. “R-really? Are you sure you won’t get in trouble?”
“Positive. I’ll pay for it myself when I close up. I don’t know what happened, Phoenix Wright, but you’re one of the most lively people I’ve seen walk into this store and you deserve to be happy. I’m sorry for whatever happened.”
He reached over and grabbed his left arm with his right hand. “I’m glad somebody feels that way... thank you, Lily.”
“Hey Nick! Is that a new girlfriend?”
He stopped at the counter while the young woman he was with kept on walking into the store. What once was a small convenience store had grown into a one-stop shop over the past couple of years. Business was steady, but one thing remained the same: Lily worked the night shift and Phoenix would stop in every couple of days and get one of his favorite treats.
“Nope! That’s my mentor! Today’s the day of my very first trial!” Nick beamed with confidence, but whether it was from hope or from a need to put on a strong face to cover the nerves Lily was unsure. “How do I look?”
Lily eyed his sharp blue suit. “You look great! Sharp and professional! Gosh, I cannot believe you are having your first trial already.”
“Me either! And I’m really lucky to be working with Miss Mia Fey! That’s the one that defended me in my murder trial, remember?”
Lily nodded. Her heart fluttered with joy seeing her friend so happy and excited. “Yes, I do remember you talking about her! You really did luck out, didn’t you?”
“I did! I just stopped by to get a good luck slushy before we head out. The usual?”
“One Not Guilty Slushy coming right up!”
“My friend said you make the best slushies here!” A loud younger girl came up to the counter. She was dressed in long purple robes and had a couple of beads in her hair. It definitely wasn’t an appearance she had normally seen... well, one that wasn’t on Halloween, anyway.
“Oh, well tell your friend I said thank you!”
“Tell him yourself! His lazy bum should be in here soon!” Lily was entertained by this weirdly-dressed girl. She also radiated confidence, but not in cockiness. She seemed like she had fun in life, like she could make sunshine out of a cloudy day any day.
Sure enough, Lily’s old friend wearing his signature blue suit came walking through the door. “Lily! I’m so glad you’re still here! I was just telling Maya about you!”
“That’s me. I’m Maya.” The girl in front of Lily said. “I’m way cooler than him though.”
“Yeah okay go get what you wanted and quit harassing the poor girl.” When Maya scurried off to go ransack the store, Nick approached the counter. “How’s it going? You look great.”
Lily blushed and smiled bashfully. “Thank you... you also look fantastic. That suit really um... suits you?” When a huge goofy smile grew on Nick’s face, she continued. “Things are going okay. I had to get a second job because they wouldn’t promote me here even though I’ve worked here for years... But my second job is great. And working the night shift here isn’t so bad, even if it’s not as fun without you coming in as often as you used to.”
“Hey, if you wanted to steal that slushy machine and take it to a store near me, that’d be sweet! I’d stop in every night! This just is kind of out of the way from where I live now. But I’m glad you still work here.”
A small voice peeped from behind him. “Hey, bucko. Move over, I wanna talk too!” Nick smiled at Lily and moved over, making room for Maya. “So do guys hit on you a lot? You’re really pretty. And you have really cool hair.”
“Thank you! I actually just put the red tips in a couple of days ago!” Lily brushed her hands through her hair and grabbed the ends, staring at the flared tips. “Guys do hit on me though, but even though some of them are really cute, I hate when people flirt with me when I’m at work. I’m never going to agree to a date when I’m at work. It’s unprofessional and shows disregard for my job. You know?”
“I understand what you mean. Nick always is hitting on me while we’re at the defendant’s stand and I’m always shoving him off.”
Nick rolled his eyes at her. “You wish. Besides, the only shoving you do is shoving burgers in your mouth.”
“Hey man, a girl’s gotta eat.”
“Another one?” Lily whispered to Nick when the small girl walked across her counter quietly. “How many channelers do you know? That’s really unsettling.”
Nick leaned forward and rested his arm on the counter, getting very close to Lily so Pearl could not hear. “I have no idea. I think I must have reached my hand into Pandora’s Box or something. And both of them can summon my ex-mentor and I’ve gotten used to it. I’ve actually gotten used to seeing my murdered, dead mentor standing next to me again.” Nick rolled his eyes quickly and took a glance down at Lily’s face before going back to maintaining eye contact. “I like your lipstick today, by the way. It makes your smile even brighter.” So nonchalant.
Lily backed up and blushed. “Oh, thank you. I just bought it. I’m glad you like it! I’m just trying to find things that suit me so I can look a little bit more... mature? Presentable?”
“You always look presenta- OW?!”
The little girl reached upwards and placed her small pile of candy on the counter. “Mystic Maya wouldn’t appreciate you talking like that, Mister Nick.” The firmness in her voice terrified Lily. How old was this girl anyway?
“Hey Nick!” Lily looked around for any familiar, or probably unfamiliar, purple robes zooming past and found none. “Are you alone today?”
“For once, yeah. Maya and Pearl are both gone on their little life adventures, so it’s just me again.”
“And you decided to visit little old me?”
Nick smiled. “I enjoy checking up on you. Giving you something to do for once, you know?”
“Is that true, or did you just want the goods?”
“You know my true weakness, Lily. I’m so thankful you guys still have that machine.”
Lily realized how thankful she was too, since it kept this busy lawyer coming back.
“Hello, Miss Lily! My daddy has talked a lot about you and your slushies!”
Lily stared at the little girl standing below the counter and then at the tired-looking man she considered her friend. She looked back and forth from both of them, trying to see a resemblance and failing. Her heart raced and her stomach twisted into knots... and she couldn’t exactly figure out why.
“She... she doesn’t look anything like you, Nick.”
“Oh, yeah. She’s not biologically mine. It’s a long story. I’m her mom and dad.”
Lily’s breath returned to normal, even though she could not understand why she panicked. Maybe it was all of those burritos from last night’s movie session...
“I don’t like blueberry, so can I just get strawberry?”
“A-absolutely!” Lily was still struggling to comprehend her emotions and get a grip on herself. It didn’t help that she felt Nick’s eyes watching her and reading her emotions... she wondered if he could see straight through her like he could with all the clients she read about in the papers. “Coming right up, dear!”
Lily dropped the store keys into her pocket and turned around, sighing into the cold. A small puff escaped from her mouth and dissolved into the crisp air.
“Lily?” a voice asked from the right of her.
“OH MY GOD,” Lily screamed and looked in the direction of the voice. A man stood with his hands in his grey sweater pockets. He had a blue beanie on his head and his face was unshaven. His eyes were hidden beneath the beanie. A second later, he lifted his head up and smiled at the shaken girl. Her eyes cleared and she focused on the figure. “N...Nick?”
“Sorry. I probably should have tried to catch you while you were still inside and feeling comfortable, but I remember what you said a few years back and I didn’t want to be rude.”
Lily crossed her arms and shivered. “I’m sorry I closed before you could come in. Are you going to be okay without your slushy?”
He smiled gently and slowly shook his head. “I actually came by to see you.”
Lily shifted the weight from one leg to the other to distract herself enough from freaking out. “Me? Why me?”
“Well. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the people that I want in my life. And I realized that I couldn’t call or text you if I wanted to talk, despite that you’ve known me longer than a lot of people nowadays you know?”
“You drove all the way down here to talk to me?”
“Yes. Well, yes and no. I came down here to ask if you wanted to come over for dinner or something sometime. Maybe we could order pizza and watch a movie. I’d really like to get to know you better.”
Lily looked up to Nick again and when she saw a blush rise to his face, she felt warmth rise to her own face, despite the cold nipping at her cheeks. “R-really? You’re not just messing with me?”
“I wouldn’t play with someone’s emotions like that. Not after Dahlia and Iris.”
“Well um... I would like that a lot actually. When are you free?”
“So she told me that she had feelings for me but after what happened with the mystic families, it was really dangerous to try to have a relationship until she was more stable and in control of everything and that she didn’t want me to wait because she didn’t want me to miss an opportunity to be with someone that really cared about me.”
“Wow... That must have been awful. You guys were really close.”
Lily sat curled up on Nick’s couch with a slice of pizza in her hand and another on the plate beside her. Her legs were curled under her and she was facing Nick who was also facing sideways towards her. The lights on the TV flickered whenever someone moved, but no sound escaped the box and a big blue “MUTE” button shined on the bottom right of the screen.
“I think it helped clear up a lot. We were adults about it and now there’s no awkward tension or anything. If anything it helped our friendship. And now both of us can move on without the awkward ‘what if’ lingering in the memories.”
“I’m glad to hear that!” Lily smiled and took a bite of pizza, gathering her thoughts to ask the next question about the young mystic he was friends with.
Instead, she was greeted with a conversation change. “I’ve always liked your smile. When we first met. I thought you had the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen.”
Lily’s heart skipped a beat and she glanced down at her lap, blushing. “I um... I thought you were a really cute, cheesy dork when I first met you.”
“Well you hit that first impression right on the head, didn’t you?” They both pushed out a small laugh.
When quiet crept through the room, Lily glanced up from her lap and looked around to find a new topic of conversation when her eyes laid on a piano in between the living room and kitchen. “Nick!” Lily’s voice perked up in excitement. “I didn’t know you played piano!”
“Oh yeah that’s a funny story actually because...”
Lily hopped up out of her seat and placed the plate of pizza on the coffee table right in front of her. She took a couple of steps to stand in front of Nick and grabbed his wrist, pulling him upwards. “Can you play me something?” After a couple of tugs, he gave in and let her pull him up.
“I guess...” he hesitated, letting her drag him over to the piano. He cautiously scooted himself through the small space between the piano and the bench, sitting down just as Lily stood next to him. A few empty seconds went by and he stared at the black and white nightmare in front of him. Slowly he brought his hands up to the keyboard and...
“YEEOUCH! Why did you hit me!?”
“I didn’t drive all this way just for you to play some silly song!”
The keyboard croaked as Nick slammed his hands down on the keys. “I can’t play the piano okay? I mean... I’m trying. But I’m terrible.”
Sensing Nick’s frustrations, she placed her hand on his shoulder. After his outburst, she lowered her voice to bring some calm to the room. “If you have anything else you’ve learned recently...” she grasped her left arm with her right hand. “I’d be interested in hearing it... if you’d want to share it, of course.”
Nick sighed. “I’m trying to learn this one older song but-“
“No buts. Just show me what you have!”
He pulled himself together and stared at the piano, attempting to remember the hand placements. He arranged his hands into position and-
He moved his left pinky to the left one key and hit the chord again, correcting his mistake.
With the three next notes being played with his right hand, Lily recognized the song and a smile inched along her face. As he sped up a little bit as he got more comfortable with the keys, Lily carefully climbed onto the spot next to him on the piano bench.
When the intro had finished, she quietly opened her mouth and let a few words escape
“I heard... that you’re... settled down”
A blush snuck into the tip of his nose and heated his whole face, brightening the tips of his ears and his cheeks. His finger slipped and he hit an extra key, but continued so as to not disturb Lily’s voice echoing in his ears.
“That you... found a girl... and you’re... married now.
I heard... that your dreams came true
I guess she gave you things
I didn’t give to you...
Old friend... why are you so shy...
Ain’t like you to hold back...
Or hide... from the light...
And suddenly the hard work put into the song was cut short when the music stopped abruptly and a pair of lips pressed firmly against Lily’s. Her eyes grew wide in shock but as she eyed up the familiar man’s face in close proximity, she fluttered her eyes closed to match his and began kissing him back.
A couple of seconds later, she pulled away. Nick’s eyes opened and he scanned her face for any signs of discomfort or displeasure. “Did you do that because you don’t know to play the rest of the song?”
“Shhh...” Nick leaned back into her and slipped one hand through her hair to hold her head into place so he could kiss her deeper.
Her eyes opened, and then closed. They slowly opened again, sharpening the view of the fuzzy world surrounding her. As her consciousness came to light, she felt a strong arm wrapped around her waist, holding her on the living room couch. Ah yes, this is where she fell asleep.
She gently placed a hand on his and slid it down and away from her, escaping his protective grasp so she could slide away from him without waking him up. She stood up and turned around to smile at the sleeping man still wearing that ridiculous hat as he slept. In the midst of her admiration, her stomach grumbled and she decided to check the kitchen out for any food.
Lily entered the kitchen and quietly scavenged the cupboards. A couple of boxes of overly sugary cereal, probably for his daughter, and a box of pancake mix. She shrugged, succumbing to her fate of terrible pancake flips, and began rummaging for the right pan.
The door handle jiggled and Lily froze like a deer in headlights. A frustrated, deeper voice sounded on the other side of the door, but she couldn’t make out what it was saying. A few seconds later, the door opened slowly to reveal a tall man wearing a red suit and a... cravat? What year was this? Lily grasped her pan like a weapon as she locked eyes with the strange man standing in the doorway.
He cleared his throat. “H-hello, I don’t believe we’ve met. What is your name?”
Lily narrowed her eyes and asked hesitantly. “You answer first. Who are you?”
“Wait a second,” he corrected, interrupting her and ignoring her question. “I recognize you...”
She gently tilted her head, releasing the grasp on the pan ever so slightly. “I’m sorry?”
“Yes... you’re the one who gave me the incorrect flavored ice order the first time I attended that extravagant gas station.”
“Edgeworth?” A voice asked behind Lily, causing her to turn around and see a sleepy, but still adorable, Phoenix standing right by the kitchen entrance. “What are you doing here this early?”
“I sincerely apologize, Wright, but I received a call and-“
A smaller woman walked in behind the man with the red coat on, wearing a longer black petticoat. “Miles,” she began. Impatience soaked her voice. “You left your phone in the car and the Chief of Police called three times. You said you’d be fast!”
That voice, that stature... Lily blinked and squinted her eyes to be double sure. “Mila?” she asked, recognizing her friend.
The girl standing next to the man turned to face her and met her with the same happily surprised expression. “Lily?!”
A small girl appeared from between the girl called Mila and the man in the red. She looked around the room and as she spotted Nick, she shouted “Daddy!” and ran towards him.
Nick crouched down and held his arms out to her. “Truce!” When she reached his grasp, he wrapped his arms around her tightly in a hug and lifted her up into the air.
The worst voice of all had rung through the air, causing the hair on the back of everyone’s necks to stand up. ”Larry!” it called. All the heads turned to stare right at the odd man standing behind the red-suited man.
“Larry, what are you doing here,” Nick asked with contempt.
“Well I saw Edgey’s car outside and figured there was a family reunion going on that the invitation I received must have gotten lost in the mail!”
Crossing his arms, the red-suited man turned to glare at the man currently babbling about nonsense. “You misunderstand, Larry. We are not here for a gathering, we came to return Trucy back to Wright, right, dear?” The man looked around for his significant other to grab and take off with to avoid confrontation with Larry, but instead found her and the girl he walked in on talking off to the side.
“We absolutely should catch up! What’s your number?!”
“Okay, it’s five five five...”
Lily adjusted the map against the glove compartment, spinning it to match it with the street corner they had just passed. “Nick,” she said frustrated, “do we HAVE to drive two hours away from home to go on dates in obscure cities now?”
Nick leaned forward and grimaced in the driver’s seat. “Yes,” he firmly replied.
