And it’s not because they disrespect your work or don’t value having access to clean bathrooms or whatever, but because of control.

When you feel like you have no control over your life or your environment, your brain is going to want to assert control however it can.

Which results in trashed bathrooms. It’s control exercised over the one small part of your environment that you still have the power to affect.

I see kids on tumblr using the language of social justice as cudgels on people who actually do care about and listen to them

or holding the creators within their communities to an impossibly high standard that they never apply to mainstream media properties.

I just see trashed bathrooms. ‘These are the people my voice will reach,’ they rationalize, ‘so these are the people I’ll hurt.’

But the guiding principles of social justice are aimed at correcting and dismantling systems. Stop using them to dismantle people.”]

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.

Emily Pangnerk Illuitok

Birds Nesting in Cliffs, c.2007

Born in 1943, Illuitok was an Inuit master sculptor from Kugaaruk. She created detailed, delicate ivory/bone carvings that mostly represented hunting or nature scenes. Illuitok often worked with found materials that she then shaped into works of art. She passed away in 2012.

The above work shows birds nesting and is made of whale bone and ivory. Notice the little detail on the bottom right of a polar bear hunting some seals.

You’ve heard of “you don’t even have a dog” and now for the Marissa fans out there might I suggest people saying to her post-launch:

“You weren’t even together.”

Marissa being legitimately heartbroken and everyone seeing her grieving and unless they happen to know both her and Ryland the FIRST thing they ask is almost always “Were the two of you an item?”

And when she says no then it becomes “did you want to be?” “did you see him as a brother instead?”

Marissa feeling hurt and frustrated because isn’t it enough that they were friends? Is twenty years of late night conversations, inside jokes, tears, laughter, Thursday dinners like clockwork—is that not enough to say she loved him, plain and simple? Is she not allowed to grieve this way, like a piece of her was torn out without anyone even telling her?

But star-crossed love isn’t for friends, they say. It just doesn’t make a good story.

As much as I love the "Hizashi Yamada is Hard of Hearing/Hizashi Yamada is Deaf" headcanon, especially for how it's contrived from most of the fandom wanting to see heroes with powerful quirks be forced to live with the consequences of using said quirk -- or be congenitally deaf -- I still think it's essential to note that two things can exist at once.

After all, Hizashi is shown at various points to have super hearing. He also seems to own some form of echolocation in his arsenal as well!

Having him calculate the exact amount of distance based off what he'd heard alone is, without any visual cues to boot, is, dare I say it, absolutely another form of badassery.

Now don't get me wrong, I still do enjoy me some deaf Mic fics here and there, of course; hell, I've written for this trope a ton myself; but I do definitely dip into the "Hizashi Yamada is great at hearing" cesspool.

(HEY hey heyy! Let's be a bit mindful of what we say in the comments! A nice commenter gently reminded me that some of the stuff said in the comments below can be taken differently as to how you might've meant it originally.)

In fanart we are free to explore the "What ifs", which is what makes fanfics worth reading. There are endless possibilities.

But we can only have that joy if we accept that sometimes headcanons and tropes don't align with canon.

I love the deaf!Mic trope and I did a lot of research to portrayed it in a way that was as canon compliant as possible in Operation Braincell. But I agree that the badassery of super hearing is worth exploring too, and aligns better with canon.

what is it with able bodied people saying “get well soon” after you say that you’re chronically ill?? like? i am not gonna? and i once literally responded with “i’m not gonna, it’s chronic, as in permanent.” and they went like “oh well, hope you get better!” like bro 💀

Speaking for me personally (and also as someone who has their own chronic health issues), most of it is, as someone mentioned in the replies, script failure. Humans have a lot of scripts and shorthands for social interactions, and the most common one for finding out someone is ill or injured is to wish them a swift recovery. There isn't really a script for how to respond when someone won't recover tho, and so many people end up falling back on the script they do know even if it's not really applicable.

In my own personal experience, when I end up saying - or feeling the impulse to say - 'get well soon' to someone with a chronic condition, what I'm really trying to convey is something more along the lines of 'I hope your good days outnumber the bad ones', and 'I hope you find treatment that is effective for and accessible to you', and especially 'hey the fact that you are in pain sucks and I wish you weren't but I know that's not likely to change soon but also I hope that it will anyway because I hate to see people suffering and the 5-year-old inside me is insisting it's not fair even though the adult me knows that's not how it works but anyway the point is I hope you're in as little pain as it's possible for you to be in'. All of which is quite a bit harder to fit on a greeting card than 'get well soon', and which don't have any conveinent shorthands that will let me express those sentiments in a concise, understandable manner.

but this actually makes sense and i think i’ll try to just take it to mean things like that whenever someone wishes me well/a swift recovery now! again, thank you so much!!

every nolan film is about time. it winds its way through his filmography; it is fractured in memento, distorted in inception, expanded in interstellar, reversed in tenet.

every hopper painting is about stillness. it is found in every brushstroke; at dusk in automat, at dawn in morning sun, at noon in office in a small city, at night in nighthawks.

i have a friend who orbits ideas of power, another who delights in the prosaic and the plain. one weaves around systems and structures, another returns always to wonder at the sea.

there are other elements of course - our lives cannot be measured by single concepts no matter how large they may be - but time and again i think we return to the things that fascinate, the things that intrigue, the things we cannot quite tear ourselves away from. the themes of our lives.
