the past few days had been bad, he’d wanted to go home, to see his pup again, but finding the lost group had turned out almost impossible. they’d been stuck in a collapsed part of the mine & walkers had surrounded them. luring them away, one by one hadn’t been easy, but they’d lost only one. it’d been a good day, honestly. he finally got back & he couldn’t help but smile when he saw sam & luna waiting for him.

“miss me?” he chirped cheekily, but luna didn’t give sam time to respond, she was up & about, whining softly at her owner’s feet, sniffing, her tail wagging as she trolled around him. “i’ll take that as a yes. from both of you.”

“i would like that. a lot. i need to stop hiding, but it’s… a lot. i get into these… ruts. when anyone mentions maybe seeing my brother, so…” it’s not information he thinks many people know, about his missing brother. he lets it settle then smiles softly at the way joseph says goodbye to his dog. “she’s in good hands. i promise.”

“it’ll get easier. uh, it did for me.” he’d lost his family early on, so he’d had a lot of time to move on & it still was hard some days. “you’re welcome to come talk, too - if you ever want to, or need to.” he was happy to listen, always. “i know, i trust you.” he’d seen the way sam looked at luna, he knew he could trust him with her. he stood again & spun around to leave, but remembered one more thing. bag open, he rummaged through it & found a little squeaky fox toy. “if you need her to come to you.” obviously content, he took his leave.

“yeah, no worries, man. we all have to help each other out, right? plus… i kind of love dogs. so more time with one is always a win.” he’s not going to add that he’s maybe kind of slightly got a thing for joseph. that’s not relevant. “–get back safe, hu?”

“you should come see us when you’re free.” plenty of dog time to be had, then. getting attached to other people was a risk, he knew that & for a while he’d tried to avoid it at all costs but.. why? they all looked out for each other, protected each other. they were good, living a little wouldn’t kill them - dead people walking or not. “that’s the plan.” soft smile, then down on one knee to pet & kiss his best friend goodbye. “you stick with sam, alright? i’ll be back soon.”

“she’s on watch with me all the time, she knows how it works, but i won’t be long. a few hours tops. thanks, sam - you’re the best.” he didn’t really trust anybody else to keep an eye on her, no.

Hilltop was still in a state of shock, mourning those they’d lost to Alpha and her pack of wild dogs. They were still reeling from the start of a harsh winter and the shuttering of the Kingdom. Blows that Paul knew struck deep in the community, ones that would leave scars that they’d never recover from, at least not completely. The extra mouths and bodies around Hilltop weren’t the problem; yes, it put a strain on them space-wise, but the Kingdom was full of good people. They’d all pitch-in, all help to make a not-so-ideal situation a little bit better.

Some of them already had.

“Josh, right?” He fell into step beside the other man, wounded shoulder still wrapped tightly against his body. It had been a long while now, but the damage had nearly killed him. Recovery from a wound like that? In a world like theirs? It wasn’t overnight. “I saw you around Kingdom a lot, but I never got a chance to say hello.” A few times he’d nodded in greeting, waved as he passed by, but there never seemed time to stop for conversation. “Are you doing okay? Settling in well enough? I know it’s a change, but…” Understatement. “We’re happy to have you here.”

by the time josh had stumbled over the kingdom, it had been well-established & a community - a life he’d thought lost had suddenly been within reach. hidden behind walls nonetheless, but it had been normalcy most of them missed the most. the kingdom’s decay had been a slow, crawling process & yet the day their king announced the end, it hit most of them by surprise. they knew they had friends, other communities to offer shelter, but leaving home behind was still difficult for most of them. yet, the kingdom was wherever their king lived, so maybe it wasn’t going to be that bad & maybe come spring, or summer they could rebuild, or find a place similar - expand. 

hilltop was great - it obviously helped that the kingdom & hilltop knew each other well, so neither of them found themselves among strangers. even josh who spent a lot of his time on guard duty. he’d taken luna out on a stroll through their new home when jesus joined him. they’d never properly spoken, but josh had heard enough to feel he knew the other man already. “yeah, hi, that’s me. i heard so much about you.” soft smile played around his lips at the admission, “yeah no, it’s great. everybody’s great.” it was a change, yes, but they’d been so lucky. “if it wasn’t for you we’d be stranded, y’know? we wouldn’t have made it, so uh -- thank you. i mean, really. ” steps slowed as they chatted & luna spun around to observe the stranger, curious nose inspecting the other. “you gonna be okay?” head turned to meet paul’s eyes, a subtle little nod towards his shoulder. he’d heard.
