[SFW Boogeyman Boyfriend Concept]
(Inspired by the recent IT movie that came out - definitely recommended!)
When you’re a young, single mother with two children, you have much to fear. About the future. About the present. Maybe even the past.
What you don’t have time for, however, are monsters under the bed when there are bills to pay. Your kids, a boy of 5 and a girl of 7, have been complaining of something haunting them at night. Something that creeps and lurks and watches - only ever watches - until they finally muster the nerve to call for you or turn on the light.
You’re stressed, being pressed for rent that’s two weeks overdue by a jerk landlord and trying to juggle a job, going back to college, and your kids. You really can’t afford anymore distractions!
You’ve soothed their fears by checking under their beds, opening their empty closets, and buying them nightlights, but still they complain of a monster. You chalk it up to your stress affecting them, or maybe they sneaked a sugar cookie or two in before bed and are reaping the consequences.
Whatever they may be, you tuck them in and sigh happily when your potential love interest - that cute neighbor down the hall - calls for you from outside your door. You let him in and tell him all about your day, and he listens thoughtfully without a groan or complaint. He’s so perfect…and he absolutely adores your kids. He’s watched them a couple times for you in the past, saving your bacon more than once, and when asked, your kids say he’s okay.
However…tonight’s a little different.
You’re taking the third bite out of this delicious pie he’s baked when all of a sudden, your world turns upside-down and spins. You feel like throwing up, but instead of making it to the sink, you stumble and fall to the kitchen floor.
“H-help me…” you plead weakly to your potential boyfriend, but rather than help you, he props you up against the cutlery drawer and starts tying your wrists behind your back, “What…what are you doing…?”
That perfect man fades away when you catch glimpse of his face, which has a malicious smirk and crazed eyes as he gags you with a kitchen towel.
“Shhhh…I’m here to play,” he whispers insanely, and takes the knife you’d used to cut the pie before stalking towards your kids’ bedroom.
Drugged and bound, your muffled screams don’t get far enough to your children and tears stream down your cheeks. You can’t believe this is happening. You can’t believe you let this monster into your home!!!
Then, you hear screaming. You had expected to hear your children scream, but no…it’s not them. It’s him - he’s the one screaming. There’s a few more ear-splitting screeches before you hear a loud crack, and then silence.
Your heart is pounding, blood rushing in your head, and can only stare in shock as his limp body falls to the floor inside the door frame to the kitchen. Your children emerge shortly after, and step over his body to rush to your side. You ask them in a shaking voice if they’re okay as they untie you, and give them kisses and hugs as if to make sure they were real.
They answer that they’re fine, and when asked what had happened:
Your youngest points at the shadows in the doorway, and you nearly scream with bulging eyes when you see a multitude of glowing red eyes leer at you. You push them behind your back and prepare to holler like no tomorrow when it asks you in the most gentle of voices:
“A-Are y-y-you a-all…r-r-right?” it stutters in a hissing, static-filled way, almost apologetic and shy, “I-I sssssaw him, a-a-and I had t-to…I-I’m s-sorry…”
You gape at the way the eyes dip bashfully, and swallow around the lump of fear in your throat.
“…I’m…okay…” you answer dumbly, and your children take hold of your hands with smiles.
“It’s okay, he’s a good monster, Mommy,” your daughter whispers, and your son tugs you closer to the creature, “He’s the monster who lives in our closet!”
You allow them to pull your forward hesitantly and you look down at the unmoving psycho lying on the floor. Is he dead? You check his pulse and find he’s just unconscious - apparently, as your children explain for the sputtering monster, your neighbor had gotten so frightened when he came out, he slipped on one of their misbegotten toys and fell against their bed-post, knocking himself out. The monster hadn’t touched a hair on his head.
“Thank you…you saved our lives,” you say gratefully, and the monster dips his head again, like a bird hiding behind its wings, “What can I do to repay you?”
“O-o-oh! Y-you don’t n-n-nneed to do a-anything!” the creature answers sheepishly, “I-I was j-j-just worried, is all. I w-watch everyone in this b-b-building, and he w-was…a-acting strange f-f-for weeks. I c-c-couldn’t t-tell anyone, but t-t-the least I could d-d-do is make s-s-sure you and your k-k-kids were safe!”
Touched by his concern and adorably-shy nature, you shoo him back into the closet for a while to call the police first on the piece of shit that almost murdered your children. Then, you tuck your kids in for a good night’s rest - the first in several weeks, now that they know the monster hiding in their room is good.
Last, but not least, you slip into the closet and peck the boogeyman right between the eyes, telling him he’s a hero - and he shouldn’t hide in your children’s bedroom anymore. He’s very much welcome to haunt yours (and your bed) instead.
