paisley duncan was born august 2nd, 1996 in a very privileged family, her parents, edward and piper duncan, are owners of a widely-known vineyard supplying not just many known businesses not just in the country but around the world, but also the royal family. the duncans have always been raised to be prim and proper, but it was paisley, the oldest of the bunch, who is considered to be the black sheep of them all. but it wasn’t always like that, until her sibling was born and all the attention was on them instead. it was like she was expected to be abiding to the family’s rules yet at the same time, they do not care that much as they used to be with her anymore. that’s why she went against the family’s wishes, not caring if they wanted her to inherit the vineyard someday, instead, she took up a path of her own, packed her things and moved to the states. she hasn’t told much people, even her family, but paisley always wanted to be a doctor, have a way to help people as she always dreamt of to begin with.

to start, she took up bachelor of science in human health and technology in the university of new hampshire, of course, even if her parents did not agree with most of her decisions, they still decided to fund for her studies, but not because they support her, it was because they had a reputation to uphold, and at the same time, they wanted to prove paisley wrong for being able to survive on her own, achieve her goals, yet of course, as she was progressing, graduating from her pre-medical course and continuing to medical school, that’s when they realized, maybe paisley does not belong to where they’ve always wanted her to be all this time. yet it was too late, the aspiring doctor had been so distant that it was almost dead silent from her end, regardless of the fact that they were still sending her money for her studies.

after she graduated from medical school, the woman then moved to memphis, to take up a residency program at the baptist memorial hospital, and that’s where she meets and got close with one of the other aspiring doctors taking up the program as well, of course, usually it was kind of a tight ship there, but with the two hitting it off instantly made things bearable for paisley. she didn’t like having a shoulder to lean on, but they made it so easy, cracked the hard exterior she’s always had growing up and before she knew it, the man had a hold of her heart. if she were to think about it, he is her first and greatest love, though she would never admit that out loud, spending times in on-call rooms, either giving each other a pop quiz, arguing about anything and everything, or just talking about their days, one finding the other taking a nap in the supply closet, to them hanging out outside of the hospital, those turning into dinner, into them basically realizing that they’re in love with each other. of course, they tried to make it work, but with the lines of their personal and professional relationship blurred out over the years from them being just residents to her going up the ranks and eventually paisley being an ER doctor, paisley thought their relationship isn’t going to work anymore, hence to her ending up things with him after one of their shifts. eventually, she makes a move to hidehill and transfers to work at hide general, where she could at least put a distance between her and her former lover.

though upon learning the news that her father has fallen ill, paisley had no choice but to leave abruptly to see his condition herself, not having time to give her farewells to the people she has quickly grown to care about over the month she has stayed in town, regardless of the deaths that has happened, she had ached to come back to what seems like the belly of the beast now upon learning the news about hidehill, once she has made sure that her father was making recovery, and that she could go back.

paisley's last encounter with dutch was something she couldn't stop thinking about as of late, but she knew after what happened at the masquerade party, dutch having to be the one to find carmen, it wasn't the right time. she couldn't describe it, but the man just manages to bring out whatever it was the way she's acting that night. though...it wasn't why she was there right now, instead of heading towards alex's trailer, she was walking up to his right now, with a six-pack of what he usually has. "before you say anything..." she prefaces, having a feeling dutch would absolutely say something about this. "i brought you this." she continues, gestures at the...gift? whatever the beer was for. "hello, dutch."

End all, be all: the truth was that he had warned her. Hell, society had surely done the same. One look at him, his dingy clothes, his worn down home—she ought to have seen the good sense to turn and run. A smart girl would've. You'd've think that of a doctor. No. No, this one clearly had a warped sense of reality, someone that could afford a vacation in checkered decisions without having to live in any of it. That sentiment made him grit his teeth. Made him hate how hers didn't do the same.

Made him glimpse at her lips, only a speckly of hatred at the root.

Those narrowed eyes had all but asked her to walk away. They'd already been tempting fate with whatever the fuck they were doing that night; spending actual time together was insane. Sharing the same cigarette? An unlikelihood. A thought gone sideways, one weirdly coming true. Fuck, it felt like a breach of control. A self-identified bad habit that tugged at something deep withing Dutch's chest. That sparked a reaction: a hand extended out, a chin gripped between forefingers, a pressure place upon rosy cheeks, urging lips to pucker. "Spit it out."

Though his tough wasn't harsh, his fingerprints left white divots to her skin, the pressure of not just touch but the moment too, fully on display. His fingers pressed that small bit more into her flesh as his face drew closer. "Listen or I'll really ruin that fucking dress."

if dutch only knew that the paisley standing in front of him was rebelling against herself as of late, rebelling against what she's known and done for years in her life. she only thought she'd only do it once by following what she'd desired to do in life, not just be one of the heirs of the people widely known for their money, properties, business, as it usually does when one comes from privilege. once more she was rebelling against herself, she has been as of late, and perhaps now she is, in the form of the man before her, getting the reaction she wanted out of him whilst she continues to recklessly push his buttons in anticipation of what might just come tonight.

she liked the adrenaline of it, of not knowing, of only wondering what she's going to get from dutch. perhaps this was the peak of their past banters whenever he's seen her in hadley, before they were separated by distance or the doctor focused on something else, by morning or afternoon greetings, his words laced with insult in return, but now...with them up close, maybe it wasn't smart for her to do this, but there was something so enticing with dutch, something that just...makes her not want to think this time.

all her life, almost all the decisions she's made were all well-thought. she's always known better. not tonight, not with him.

"no." she exhales, her smirk only getting wider at the pressure of his fingers pressed against her cheek, and it only pushed her further, closer to him. she knew she hit the right button this time, and now she waits for the consequence of her actions. "is it only just going to be my dress, or...something else?"

Dutch merely gave a single, short nod of his head. Despite being one for arguments, it was easier for him to leave it there for now: 'getting drunk is fun.' There wasn't a real need to bring up those days where downing six-packs had nothing to do with putting a smile on his face and more to do with the piles of bills on his counter, another hometown name splashed across the news screen, or finding himself opposite one more gravestone. No, that was a path Dutch didn't want to go done, so he settled for, "Yea," and took another drink, a long one which nearly emptied his glass.

He hadn't expected for Paisley to take him up on his offer, much like how he hadn't thought she'd actually come tonight— and with him no less. All words sprung up for the sole purpose of toying with her. When she failed to react in the way that he imagined, Dutch fell between a feeling of irritation and curiosity, tacked on with a newfound drive to test their limitations even further. "Not even a cough," he commented before taking the cigarette back and placing it between his lips. As he took his next drag, his sightline thinned and his eyes raked over her, scrutinizing her in a way. Trying to add up all her parts, dead-set that he sum would still be exactly what he thought: another little, rich Estates girl with her pedestal.

In the end, Dutch shook his head. "Don't say shit you don't mean." A warning. A guy like him at the wheel, there was no place to go but down; she was a doctor, she should be smart enough to know that. "You should probably just do yourself a favor, go 'head and take that pretty dress back inside. Quick, before you reek of smoke." His jaw tightened for a moment before he went in for another puff, stare fixed on her face, adding silently, 'you don't want to go there, princess.'

there was something about dutch's reaction that piques paisley's curiosity, but a response that was uttered so little says as a lot. it is already a given that they're both walking down separate paths in life, one was kind of someone just in passing by the other, as she would sometimes visit the trailer park, whenever alex was there, which only slowed down as of late, now that alex was living at paisley's place as she was helped by the doctor in recovery. but right now they're walking in the same direction together, as she attempts to learn more about the man.

there was obviously walls up that surrounded dutch, but instead of keeping her distance, paisley finds herself only walking towards it, towards him, for some reason she was yet to understand. she's always wondered about how he despised people like her, as much as she didn't want to admit it and as much as she didn't want to be associated with her parents, she truly came from money, and was offered comfort in exchange of casting herself in a way her parents wanted her to be, but instead, the woman left that, even though she still has evidently been still receiving some from her mother. the doctor then only chuckled lightly at this comment, perhaps it was something she still hasn't unlearned to this day, even though she has attempted to fully quit smoking. the need to just relax herself through stressful times, despite it being unhealthy, was something she couldn't avoid now. not when you live in this town.

"i wouldn't dare doing that." probably, trouble was something the doctor avoided her whole life, she's always chosen to be good, possibly she was still trying to fit a mold of her own, even though she's left the one that was set for her. she knew that push so well, the words from the man attempting to shift her focus back to the masquerade ball, but she persisted. "now, you suddenly care about my dress, dutch?" she asks, her eyebrow raised which was concealed by her mask. she's once more take the cigarette from him and puts it between her lips, eyes staring deeply into his as she takes another hit, a subtle smirk slowly forming, knowing she was pushing his buttons.

Having fun, at a rich person thing, that was a hard thing for Dutch to own up to. He wasn't even sure he'd qualify what he was feeling as fun; though even if it were, the chances of him saying it aloud were slim to none. And so his eyes squinted harshly, judgingly at the idea. "I'm getting drunk," he corrected, then taking a long sip from his glass, as if he needed to prove a point. Remnants of amber liquid clung to his lips as his eyes followed her— watching as heels clicked upon stone, then as hips swayed, and finally at wine brought to her lips. "I'll leave you to have the fun for the two of us." He winked before switching one vice for another.

It was as the smoke left his lips, that he looked up at Paisley, paused to consider for a second before ultimately extending his arm, offering out the cigarette for her to take. "I'm curious," he said simply, letting those two words hang, as if they alone explained his thoughts. One beat, then another passed before he continues, his blues eyes examining her in the darkness. "Convinced 'ya outta work. Maybe I'll convince 'ya to take a drag. Or something else." His head angled to the side. "The night's young."

"getting drunk is fun, deny it all you want, dutch...i stand by my words." perhaps the both of them were actually having a nice time at this masquerade ball, paisley being away from work where she's chosen to really drown herself with as of late, of course, besides those meaningless hookups she's had just to numb herself, and for dutch...there's a lot of things about him that makes her curious, starting from how he was even able to convince her into attending this in the first place. anyone else with the same argument wouldn't even get to her, but dutch...he didn't have that much of a hard time changing her already made-up mind.

"curious...about what?" paisley bites her lower lip for a moment as she stared at the cigarette between his fingers. it has been a while since she had a smoke, maybe the last time was during her residency, but such thing was something she immediately let go. not now though, when she had been in so much stressful situations. without a word, she then takes the cigarette from him and putting it between her lips, cautiously taking a long drag, letting the smoke linger before exhaling. "i...needed that." she admits, as she hands it back to him. "at this point, i might let you take the lead for tonight, dutch--and something else?" she asks with an eyebrow raised.

"Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me," Marlee grumbled, already aware she was going to be hungry as fuck the more she smoked. Her eyes widened as she watched the other woman try the poppers. "Is it actual strawberry with jalapeno, or is that the name of some fancy man made blend of jalapeno? You know what fuck it, I'm too hungry to care." Marlee reached for one, popping it in her mouth, her face a picture of focus as she assessed it. "It's good...it's like...an 8 out of 10, probably not worth what they would charge us for it if it wasn't free at this party." An idea sparked at the back of her mind and she decided this was her new best friend for the moment. "Do you wanna go halvesies? Get one of everything and cut them in half and share. That way we can really try one of everything without getting too full?"

"it's cruel--even i don't even understand why would some people think appetizers would be enough for this ball." of course, paisley knew things like this, even just a little bit, due to her parents and how they would organize some party or some grand ball for whatever at their property near the vineyard back at home. she tried to understand, during her younger years, yet there were times that she couldn't just comprehend the excessiveness of things, or the unreasonable amount of money they've paid for it. she knew this was close to home, and she does feel like it would be something her parents would indeed do. "it's...good, but not worth your money, but you're right--we're lucky the everything's free for tonight." she couldn't help but chuckle. "oh yeah, absolutely, we could do that. looks like they all take two bites, i like this idea."

"I'm a visionary, a designer before their time, what can I say?" Alex laughed as she eventually took off the mask and sat down beside her friend, slouching into the chair straight away as she usually did. As much as she'd never really admit it out loud, Alex was an extrovert and, lately, she'd been holed up away from everyone so it was no wonder she had been feeling down in the dumps. She could feel herself recharging around all these people, even if alcohol wasn't flowing in her direction. "DUTCH?" She said, extremely surprised that out of every name that could have come out of the doctor, his was the one that landed. She laughed as Paisley read out the next, nodding a little bit. "I mean, he's not wrong, is he? You literally pay for my life right now," she smirked. "But hey, I love Dutchy, good for you... So you guys like here togetherrrr?" Alex wiggled her eyebrows with a smirk. "I can stay in the park tonight if you need space."

"alright, okay--keep your voice down, alex..." paisley chuckles, rolling her eyes at alex's reaction. it was a reaction valid in a way that nobody's seen coming that paisley would go with dutch as her date. it was even surprising that she went to this party at this point, given how little time she planned her outfit, and sending a late notice at work. in addition to that, her and dutch have bantered a lot, especially whenever she comes to hadley to visit alex and jovi. "you have to expect at this point that i'm almost never not busy, alex. i mean--you spent a lot more time at the house than me at this point." she then chuckles at her words, shaking her head. "you don't have to spend the night at the park, absolutely nothing is going to happen. i've just come here after he's pestered me a little bit about it."

"I really shouldn't have expected anything less than perfection," Ela was sure there wasn't a single person in attendance that couldn't attest to the grandeur that the Conrads had settled with remembering their daughter and all others lost to the town's recent tragedies. "She'd have loved this," undoubtedly, Tiffany would have sought to cause all kinds of chaos on a night like this - maybe the irony of it would get them through the entirety of it without something going wrong. "this is something she would've wanted...based on what i've heard about her." maybe one of the many reasons paisley didn't want to attend this ball was because she was the one to find tiffany's corpse set up like a scarecrow in jordan's farm. in a way, it was still a sight that she couldn't get out of her head. maybe it was one of the reasons why she'd initially chosen to work instead, but after that banter with dutch... "you look beautiful, ela. i know i said i'll be working...but we're here."

If it weren't for getting tangled in conversations and an intermission with some hors d'oeuvres, Dutch would have opted to split his time between the bar and hanging out right here. Some fresh air, a glass of whiskey he normally couldn't afford, and a freshly lit cigarette— dare he say it, he might have been enjoying himself. Then, as if he'd jinxed himself, Dutch could sense a pair of eyes on his as he drew in a drag of smoke. The grey cloud lofted into the breeze, sailing off into the starry sky as he turned, offering only half a glance. "If you got some commentary, might as well share with the class."

the second dutch and paisley parted ways at the party, the doctor then decides to socialize, say a couple of hellos to people she knows, her friends, spend a little bit of her time by the bar, the appetizers and eventually check up on alex. she was admittingly having a bit of fun so far, maybe she's supposed to thank the very reason she was here in the first place, even though the was just in result of their usual banters. "you're having fun, that's all i had in mind." paisley says, walking up to the other as she takes a sip of her red wine. "now...maybe this isn't too bad after all, right?"

The appetizer table was a veritable buffet of interesting looking tiny nibbles, most of which Marlee couldn't name. All of them would easily be eaten in two to three bites, everything garnished to the high heavens and on plates that probably cost more than her whole apartment. Indecision had left her stranded for ten minutes already as she looked between the options helplessly, munchies that wanted everything all at once. "Do you think this is going to be one of those parties where all the food is such tiny portions that we're all going to end up flooding the burger and pizza places at 2am cause we're still starving?" Honestly, she thought she'd been asking the question to herself, but a tilt of her head brought into focus a woman on her left. "Do you know what any of this is? I'm so hungry i'm probably going to try it all anyway...but I like...don't know where to start when I don't know what anything is. You would think they'd have little information placards, ya know?"

paisley didn't even plan on attending this party, but after that little banter with dutch over text, not she was here, with her last-minute outfit, but it was perfect enough for the occasion, the mask she was supposed to lend to alex to replace her shark mask was now instead worn by her, it thankfully it matched the gown she first had laid her eyes on. the doctor splits with her date for the both of them to socialize for a bit, and now she's found herself by the appetizers. "i think that's the thought of it. they want us all still hungry after this." paisley chuckles, before taking one of the appetizers, some strawberry bites people were talking about. "i think this is one of those strawberry jalapeno poppers--oh well, yes, it is. it tastes good though?" she gives marlee a shrug. "it wouldn't been better if we did get those little placards on trays. you know...i may just try one of each, out of curiosity."

Alex knew that the mask would get a laugh from the doctor after their text exchange about wearing it. Honestly, she was surprised that she was even let in with it on. Though, most people probably wouldn't be - if there was one thing Alex had, it was the gift of the gab. "Of course I'm fuckin' wearing it, I mean look at me, dude," she laughed, hands gesturing up and down her outfit. "If there was a prize for best dressed, I'd smoke all you bitches." Alex felt like this was exactly what she needed, sober or not. "Yeah," she smirked, nodding her head a little. "Yeah, and not to toot my own horn or anything but I'm pretty sure she's obsessed with it, so-- it's a win all around, quite frankly." Alex eventually took the mask off, sitting down next to her friend. "Who did you end up coming with anyway? I thought you were on shift tonight?"

"yeah yeah, i see it now, alex, no need to brag, you have us all beat." paisley couldn't help but laugh even more, amused by her friend's look, and of course, happy that she went against he friend's advise not to wear the mask for the party. it was somehow the first time the doctor has seen her in a lighter, smiling mood for the past couple of weeks, since the death of elena. though...she kept her watchful eyes, still, wanting to make sure alex was doing alright. perhaps it was good that dutch basically goaded her into going this ball. "i was texting dutch the other day and....he said that..." she clears her throat for a moment taking her phone out of her purse to read out his text. "i'm lil miss gotta save the world too busy for the rest of us. and maybe...i took offense, so now i'm here--erm, we actually went together..."

If she was being honest, Alex knew that coming here tonight was probably a bad idea. She wasn't exactly a picture of mental stability right now and her previous relapse had happened at a time when (other than the serial killers running around town) nothing had really been wrong. But, in Alex's opinion, that's exactly why she should go out tonight - it would be a true test, and it would be a distraction. Plus... Alex had major FOMO. So, here she was, shark mask and all. Though she hadn't come with Paisley, it didn't take her long to hunt the Doctor out of the crowd, approaching with wine in hand. "I've been assured this is actually red wine and not like the blood of the bartender's enemies," Alex said as she placed the wine down in front of the only one between them that could drink it.

paisley was supposed to be working instead of attending the masquerade ball, but after her little banter with dutch over text, the doctor changed her plans last minute, and grabbed whatever she could wear for this party. thankfully everything worked well, and she had now found herself just watching people around here until she sees alex, donning her shark mask walking over her. "oh...you're really wearing it, oh my god..." she couldn't help but giggle, eyeing her friend from head to toe before taking the wine glasses from her. maybe she needed this, just be out and relax. "alright, i see the vision now, the shark mask actually looks great, alex." she gives her friend an amused smile. "has jovi seen it already?"
