He buys, he sells, he'll give you a loan. This Amicable Pawnbroker is always happy to lend a hand, whether it be from his pawn shop in London or at zee in his schooner. Surely, you can trust him. You've never seen a more genuine smile.

J M Certsey is among those cheerful, dark-spectacled folk who show up every now and again. He's harmless, if one ought to assume by outward looks. He owns a pawn shop near Wolfstack Docks, and occasionally one may hear the sound calliope music drifting from that place. For all his suspicious nature, he's remarkably unsubtle.

Paul "Pete" Sullivan

A cranky and Irascible Black Baller, hailing from the Surface. About as good as bad company gets, one would say. A great ally if you can get on his good side. A terrible foe if you should ever do him a bad turn.

Pete Sullivan is a man on a mission, and nothing will get in his way. Apart from his pugilistic tendencies, he's very much the "back in my day" sort, and his idea of a nostalgic past happens to be crimping and "belaying pin soup". The packet trade wasn't for everyone.

I went through setting up the Burrow church with Samuel recently (extremely funny and embarrassing for him that this storyline starts with getting slapped on the wrist by the entire church of england. can a man not be catholic in peace) and I got very very attached to Sam's absolute disaster of a parish council, so I wanted to try to figure out how to draw them...... I didnt mean to render them all i just got carried away.......

Basic gist is that you are charged by a "Delightful Reverend" with helping to organise a "church in the wild," with the aim of making a church with the traditional vibes of a liturgical christian church but without the christianity, one that's open to humans and devils and anyone else and can't be claimed by either group. My favourite bit of this is that you are asked to assemble a Parish Council and they all give you their advice on any decision you have to make, which MAY OR MAY NOT ACTUALLY BE HELPFUL. Despite being very Christian himself, Sam was intrigued by the idea and wanted to give it an honest try. He chose:

Percy aka The Intrepid Deacon, an alarmingly hell-curious but deeply genuine deacon friend from a different adventure where Sam worked hard to help him seek answers while keeping his soul safe. Probably the one most aligned with Sam's values and the only person here that he trusts. I love him.

The Retired Vice-Admiral, who was the Reverend's pick and Sam didn't want to overrule her on everything. HES SO NORMAL and clearly just trying to recruit for some kind of sun cult. THIS ISNT THAT KIND OF CHURCH, MAN. I love him, Sam wanted to punch him on multiple occasions

The Crimson Captain!!! Sam wanted a devil on the council but felt oddly more comfortable with one of the devils who still serves the old devil monarchy.... They feel the most like they have a Faith as he understands it so there's a strange sort of kinship there? ANYWAY this guy is the soggiest devil imaginable, clearly still haunted by his mistakes and losses in an old Hell war in every piece of feedback he gives. Like getting relationship advice from someone who's been divorced six times. I love him.

And the Delightful Reverend herself! Every time you have to make a decision and ask her opinion shes like "augh i hate making choices" thus making her THE MOST RELATABLE CHARACTER IN FALLEN LONDON, A GAME THAT IS 80% MAKING CHOICES. She's very hard to draw but I love her.

The late 1800s were a time where a lot of shanghaiing was going on and the Neath strikes me as a terribly perfect place for that— Shanghaiing was the practice of just, abducting people to force them to be sailors, it happened a lot in the USA and England. They needed sailors and, well, you take a drunk guy out to sea and he doesn't have any choice but work or die.

The Neath offers a concerning possibility where a Surface sailor could abduct sailors, pass them off to a Neathly partner, and kill those who had been shanghai'd— trapping them not only in service at zee, but also eternally to the Neath... Imagine waking up after a drunken night to learn you were taken to the underworld, killed, and now had to zail on a zee of monsters with no hope of ever returning home.

#YES FINALLY AN EXCUSE TO TALK ABOUT PETE #I mean yeah he did get shanghaied *before* he came to the Neath but it is still fascinating #he's been planning on perhaps becoming a crimp himself #inspired by the guy who sold him weirdly enough #this seems like a good opportunity to for him to get started...#fallen london #the irascible black baller

Thrilling news FLondon players, if your OC is from the US and didn’t get to London before 1897 they could have ridden the world’s first “escalator” (a moving ramp displayed in Coney Island as an attraction in 1896).

Or, if they were in France in 1899 II (1900), they could have ridden the first escalator with stairs at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
