Apptober v2.0: Day 1
Here I am, back at it again because I’m not coding enough this semester. Let’s get right into it:
Background:
I plan on going to graduate school for a masters in computer science, and ya boi needs to get better at research. I know what my research interests are, and I thought I would do something with that.
Objectives:
I want to do an in-depth survey of process synchronization. Operating Systems is one of my all-time favorite computer science topics (and my #1 research interest), and I plan on doing my undergraduate thesis on some topic in concurrent programming. With that said, I want to see what are the pros and cons of each method used for synchronization and how they stand up using various metrics, whether it be binary locks, condition variables, etc. And personally, I feel there’s a better way than busy waiting.
I also want to do a machine learning project. I’m currently in a machine learning course now with material from Stanford Engineering Everywhere ( https://see.stanford.edu/Course/CS229 ), but I can’t learn without examples. So I want to make a program that learns something. I don’t know what it’s learning or how it’s learning it yet, but I want to make a program learn. Understanding the math behind it would be a plus, but we’ll see.
Requirements:
At the end of Apptober, I want to have measured the different ways to synchronize critical sections and have a general idea of which ones minimize on CPU usage, downtime, etc. I also want to have a program that learns something worthwhile, maybe that could solve an around-the-house problem. And of course, I want to post mostly everyday (assuming partial differential equations doesn’t kill me) with rather the information I learned or a code snippet that I wrote that day.
And by the way, if you’re reading this and want more, check out @apptober ! There’s a lot of amazing people taking this challenge this year, even more than last year, so go check out the others and spread the love!
I’m participating in Apptober again this year, so go check it out!

hey so if you are feeling bad about anything watch this. it is good and pure and loving
not many people know about it, but i wanna point everyones attention to the best forum fight i ever saw; some guy getting pissed off cause his friend traded him a duskull called ‘dudeskull’
I agree, this is one of the greatest threads Ive seen in my life
this is a must read
Did you know? CS
Do you know why the NES leaves on a hanging note when it freezes? (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look at this)
Before I get onto why this happens, we need to talk about computer architecture a bit. Somewhere in the phone/tablet/computer you’re viewing this post on lies a motherboard. On that motherboard is what we call the Central Processing Unit, or CPU for short. CPUs, in short, manage all of the information and tasks going on in your device. So all of the operating system, applications, and cat pictures are being managed by the CPU.

Hey! Have you ever wondered why old consoles did the thing? I made an explanation over on my computer science blog! Go check it out!
Don't call me out like that
Apptober: The First Day
I’ve decided that I should code more since Algorithm Design and Computer Organization and Architecture don’t have me coding enough this semester.
Background:
I want to learn more of C#. I’ve gotten fairly acquianted with C++ and Java through my studies, but I haven’t learned much C# and I feel like I should. I’ve got the basics down, but if I want to be a software developer, I want to be better than the basics. The program I want to write deals a lot with User Interface and I’ll be trying to incorporate some algorithms and data structures so it’s not a simple program.
The Program:
I want to code a calculator app in C#. I’ve built a basic one in Java that does addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. However, it can only work on two operands and one operator. Trying to punch in a second operator crashes the program. This time, I want to make a fairly competent calculator with a GUI and more functionality, such as being able to do base conversions or log2 calculations, since those are very prominent in my field.
Requirements:
I want my calculator to be able to do the following:
Have an easy to use user interface
Have basic arithmetic operations, such as addition, multiplication, etc.
Be able to calculate base conversions in an efficient manner
More to come…?
Let’s do this!
Hey! I'm participating in Apptober this year! I didn't want to clutter my personal blog with a bunch of computer science jargon, but I will be doing this daily for the month of October!
Sometimes it’s hard to be direct.
Remember this spooky comic from last year?

I didn’t realize how much spongebob I really knew until y'all started posting captioned screenshots and I could fully reconstruct both the visual and auditory situations of each and every goddamn one. Can’t study for History of the English Language but by fuck do I remember what that one voice actor of that one fish from that one episode sounds like to the damn syllable.
What’s yours is mine.
