THE AESTHETIC SERIES » THE CRESTFALLEN.
You canât see past the shadows youâve cast and all I can do is watch you stumble in the dark.
lilith was glad to be off work. she was glad to be able to go home and eat chinese food and ice cream and watch whatever dumb comedy was on the tv. however she wasnât glad for the torrential downpour that had soaked her to the bone on the short walk from where she parked her car to her apartment building and she was fuming by the time she got inside. so much so that she didnât bother to pay attention to the lobby itself, and went skidding as soon as the sole of her soaked sneaker hit the equally soaked floor, sending her sprawling into a puddle of water and all her stuffâa water bottle, her phone, a walkie-talkie and a stack of twenty or so pamphletsâflying.
âi swear to fucking god if this rain doesnât let up iâm gonna move to fucking santa barbara or something.â she spewed, the tone in her voice filled with anger as she picked herself off the floor. âanywhere with less goddamn rain.â
donât laugh, donât laugh --- oh fuck, lana snickered wryly as she grabbed a few of the womanâs things. âwelcome to san francisco.â she says softly, handing the things to her, looking her over a bit. sheâd seen her around, lana was sure of this, she wouldnât forget a face like hers. not that it mattered. she wasnât around enough to recall anyone.
âThe peonies really are lovely. They represent honor, in most cases. But beauty too. Thatâs where it gets itâs name, actually ââ Stevie explained, long fingers delicately tracing along the pink petals. The only thing that stopped the petite brunette from diving into a long-winded explanation of the flower and itâs greater cultural meaning was the soft chime that indicated someone had just stepped into the shop. âExcuse me for just a moment, will you?â She asked her current customer â and pretended to ignored the brief expression of relief flickering across their features. âThe shopâs closing in five, love. But in the meantime, can I help you with something?â She asked, turning a bright smile on the newcomer.
âdetective chen.â she flashes her badge, ânice place you have here.â was it though? not to lana anyway. not that the place wasnât overflowing with b e a u t y, but because it was stockpiled with flowers which the brunette never understood the appeal of. they die, for starters. âiâm investigating a case and was wondering if you sold anyone any amaryllis belladonna lately?â
ezra furrowed his brows together and frowned at the.. toy that had been left out in the hallway. the placement was general enough that he was unsure if it was meant for HIM directly or if it was just someone tossing out their garbage. had someone made them ? were they sending a message ? sensing someone coming his way, ezra swiftly straightened himself upwards. he eyed the person carefully and raised the doll that was in his hands, â this yours ? â he questioned with a slight, suspicious narrowing to his eyes. Â
lana had w a y too much energy & nothing to do with it. she didnât want to go to the gym today -- it wasnât her day; she goes to the gym every wednesday -- so she figured sprinting up and down the apartment stairs should do it. sheâd get bored, shower, then head out for a drink. all of that was the plan âtil ezra asked her about a ... doll? puppet? it was hard to make out from her distance. sweat beads dripping down her neck and chest she walks towards him, looking at the .. creature. âlooks like a punch puppet.â she finally says after eyeing it, âmay i?â she asks, reaching for it.
matthias had an awful habit of losing his keys for someone who was so obsessively organized. that and his debit cardâ though at least the second case was easier to solve. now he was stuck locked out of his house waiting for the cheap locksmith because the building manager ( no surprise ) couldnât be reached. heâd wandered up to the roof, coming up here frequentlyâ mostly at night. it was calming to him, a place to think without overloads while he smoked and played music. which is exactly what he was doing now as a noise startled him. âoh shit, hey,â he said, barely turning around long enough to see if he even liked the person, breathing out a huff of smoke. âif youâre hanging out up here i can put this out. or share, whatever youâre feeling,â he joked, turning the music down slightly. âwasnât even sure if anyone else knew about it up hereâ liked to thing it was my own space, but hey.âÂ
sheâd cornered him -- a large, black rodent; whiskers twitching every time she moved towards it -- but he got away. from her apartment to the roof she ran after the creature not expecting to see anyone or care for small talk when matthias spoke to her. âfuck!â at the sound of the male, the rat jumped and scampered away. great, now sheâll have to redo this whole thing again. âitâs a roof.â she finally states, blowing a strand of hair out of her face when she decided the rat was officially gone. âevery building has one.â
laurc:
â   what time is it?    â   not that it matters; her body hadnât seen the abatement of unconscious for more than twenty-four hours, and sheâs living on trace fumes given off by chisel-tipped permanent markers. âoh, and red wine; a taste of malbec kisses the corner of her mouth, and the tip of her tongue takes a languid swipe at it (  a sigh - a hearty sigh - follows. sheâs no closer to bed than she was two glasses ago  ).
lana knew damn well she shouldnât be drinking. if anything she should be milking a tall glass of water -- two cubes with a splash of lemon -- but how could she turn down a bottle of red attached to lauraâs hand at her door? though the idea of slamming the wooden block did cross her mind. âaround 1 i think.â lana responds taking a hearty sip with a sigh, tilting her head back against her sofa. âwhy? leaving?â she doesnât look at laura to read her body language, she didnât need to. she was accustomed enough.
cxraisms:
âthatâs very true. maybe thatâs why i havenât found a princess to run away with yet.â cora joked, nodding her head. âwe had.. some type of deposit set up, but if itâs not going to work out the least i could do is grant him a refund.â
a hint of a smile played around on lana lips, though not truly providing an actual smirk. maybe lanaâs idea of love was jaded or maybe she was business first & everything else second that at coraâs next words she shakes her head, âit wasnât as if you told him to marry her yourself. i say keep the money.â
sagcss:
âi doubt iâm not challenging enough,â sage sighs. âiâm probably too challenging, if anything, really. you never had a problem with that, though, if i recall.â
âwell, iâm not everyone.â she responds a tad smugly. âmaybe they canât afford it. the economy isnât exactly flowing.â

the  brunetteâs  back  was  turned  as  she  looked  at  the  pictures  that  once  were  on  the  walls  laid  flat  on  the  floor.  with  her  hands  on  her  hips  she  shrugged.  bonnie  scoffed,  â  play  chopinâs  nocturne  no.2  in  e  flat,  op.9  no.2,  by  MEMORY  and  youâve  got  a  deal.  â  she  smirked  to  herself,  knowing  the  EXQUISITE  piece  was  one  of  the  most  difficult  piano  concertos  to  play.  even  she  failed  MISERABLY  ten  minutes  into  the  melody.  she  loved  the  piece,  REGARDLESS  every  time  she  heard  it,  it  felt  like  home. â  that  WOULDNâT  be  the  first  time  someone  tried  to.  â  she  partly  joked  (  she  did  carry  stories  for  DAYS  )  her  petite  figure  turned  and  opal  eyes  landed  on  the  girl  standing  in the  doorway  with  a  hand  hovering  over  the  firearm  strapped  to  her  side.  her  brows  furrowed,  â  i  hope  youâre  on  duty,  officer.  â  her  eyes  narrowed.  â  or  else  youâll  be  in  some  TROUBLE. â  iâve  been  living  her  for  FOUR  YEARS.  i  think  iâll  be  fine.  âÂ
lana folds her arms over her chest, head softly bent down as yet another ghost smile attacks her features, âwhat about mary had a little lamb? i hear itâs a classic.â as before, the small gesture disappeared as an eyebrow quirked, âdo i want to know?â lana scoffs, âiâm a l w a y s on duty. oh, i know. iâve been listening to your music for at least that long.â not that lana minded the music. in fact, she loved it. it was loud, sure, but it drowned out her thoughts and made her feel surrounded by instruments and cigarette smoke. though now the music was turned down and the only thing that encompassed them were photos and the smell of food. âare you cooking something?â
sagcss:
âyou know what the worst thing about the beginning of the new year is?â sage asked, a sigh falling from her lips. âi get all these new clients who are looking to âchange their lifestyleâ or whatever, and they come to one session and put in all this work and tell me how excited they are to work with me and then they never show up again. this is the second person whoâs cancelled on me in two weeks.â
lana splashes water into her mouth, chest heaving as she slows down on the treadmill to cool down. âmaybe they canât afford you.â she says, in between breaths, âor maybe youâre not challenging enough.â

He smiled quietly at the woman as a quick thank you before reaching across her and taking a stack of napkins assuming he didnât need more than that. He looked at the woman, quickly feeling the tiny bit of empathy. He hated the fact that his kids were considered an nuisance to some people but couldnât help it. He loved his kids more than life itself and would defend them no matter what. âUhâŠ.would you like to sit with us? I was just going to order another milkshake and I donât know if milkshakes are your kinda thing but if you need the company Iâve got more than enough.â He suggested standing in front of her whilst holding his bundle of napkins.
green eyes landed on the children in their assortment of antics before coming back to the father. on one hand she preferred working alone -- it was why she didnât ( and r e f u s e d ) have a new partner -- on the other, she may not stand out if she was surrounded by people. âi love milkshakes.â she finally says, a generic smile turned on her lips. standing, lana slides a chair in between him & child number 1. ...she didnât have to entertain the tiny humans, did she?
cxraisms:
âyou could say that again. i can personally say other than today, iâve never seen something like that happen. well. thatâs a lie. iâve seen it in movies, of course. thatâs clearly different, thoughâoh!â coraâs hand whipped up to her head, patting her hair trying to find the sneaky twig. âi donât know. waiting to hear from him via e-mail, actually.â
âmovies are often built on a fantasy anyway.â she takes another sip, eyes attentive to the twig vs. hair battle. âdid you still get paid for your time?â
cxraisms:
âlet me tell you, iâve had quite a day. i had to hide behind these bushes at the park for a surprise engagement of a couple. once the dude got down on one knee and the girl realized what he was doing⊠i kid you not, she placed a hand over her mouth. i thought it was an adorable shotâbut she actually started running away before he could even ask that infamous four worded question. it was terribly awkward to witness.â
âmarriage isnât for everyone.â lana shrugs, âyou have a twig in your hair.â she takes a sip of her tea ( lol thatâs not tea ). âdid he catch her?â
