PB 10

This Progress Blog makes my tenth and final (not counting the free one) for my portfolio.  I am done with two of my five classes, and have a paper to write in each of the three classes left.  Eng 2, Economics, and Environmental Sciences, are the classes that I have to write papers for.  I have already written the Science paper, I just need to edit it before I submit it.  I think I have a case of the summer blues because I have gotten to where I just don't care anymore, and I would rather be doing anything but writing papers.  I would  like to say Thanks to Professor P., for the alternative option.  It will make things easier on me, in the next few days, as it will others such as herself in grading our papers.  I would also like to express my condolences to her and the staff and loved ones of Dr. Jones.  I understand losing a loved one as every one here at the college should understand the difficult times that are endured during a loss of a loved one.  I have learned a few things this semester in the course of this class.  Learned a couple of new literacy meanings, and why fans express themselves they way they do sometimes.  As I sit back and reflect on this semester, I think of how possible it is to do 18 hours, and still make it thus far.  I have no idea how I have been able to manage such a feat.  I hope that other people will see it as a sign that anything is possible with enough discipline and effort.  I know that writing this paper is going to be time consuming as is the Economics paper as I still have no clue what I have learned about.  That is partly in large to taking all my classes online, and not being able to speak with or see the instructor face to face. E-mail does work but it is extremely hard to communicate through when you need to see things done in person, because you are a hands on learner.  As I look at my list of to-do's to finish this semester, it dwindles down.  I hope that I can write this paper, and pass this course with flying colors.  With that said... I am off to start the process of writing my final English paper.... (hopefully ever)!!!

I am re-blogging this artifact, because it shows the creator's passion for Elizabeth Turner.  These images have been composed together which were drawn from several of the movies.  Elizabeth is a strong willed woman, and it is reflected here in this artifact.  In one image, she convinced a small group of pirates that they should sail to Tortuga, which is where she was headed to in order to try and find her true love Will Turner. She has the endurance and will to stand up and fight for what she believes in and our creator has seen this, and decided to create an artifact for it.

Not all treasure is silver and gold mate.

I am re-blogging this for my English 2 paper, because the creator has a pretty good definition of treasure.  Simply stated, "Not all treasure is silver and gold mate."  This one liner speaks volumes of words, when it comes to personal treasures.  Personal treasures can consist of money, kids, family, or other tangible or non-tangible items.   In this post you can see that money is being exchanged, and that in another scene Jack and Elizabeth narrowly escape death, and fly away in a make shift parachute.  This would show that they treasure their lives, and needed to get away from the situation that they were in. 

Money can be defined  (in an economical world) as a medium of exchange, store of value, and a unit of account.

PB 9

So it has come down to the last 2 weeks of school.  It feels good but I know that I also have 9 hours in each summer term to complete also.  I am siting here home alone, wanting to put this paper, and 2 other papers off.  One is really easy because I'm writing about something I already know, I just have to find the sources I am using.  I am not looking forward to this paper, because of the complexity of it.  I just hope that I can get through this paper and my Economics paper.  I will be glad with August gets here because I will be done completely with school.  I am starting to get the "I don't cares" and am really putting this paper off.  I need to stay focused but with summer around the corner, how can I?  It'll be a lot different taking on 9 hours in each summer semester vs. the 15 I am taking right now.   I just need to buckle down and get to writing this paper because I won't much time next week to work on it, or my other papers for that matter.   On the bright side, I will be able to work on them at work.. I'll just have to remember to save my work and then send it to myself (email) so that I can stay on top of it, and get it done.  My house is in a small neighborhood and on a lake... The water looks too inviting... I think I'll wrap this long babbling post up, because I am obviously not getting anything done anytime soon.  Here's to the Summer Blues!!!!

FREE PROGRESS BLOG!!!

Just wanted to write this FREE Progress Blog just to vent for a moment.... I came home from work this morning, and planned on being done with all homework assignments for school by lunch...... Couldn't get my laptop to start up and it was working just fine yesterday!!!!! Just wanted to vent a second.... now that I have to rewrite my entire paper!!!!

But I would like to say Thank You to Professor Phifer as she is working with me on this issue!!!

I am re-bloging this for my Eng 2 paper.  I see literacy as power, adaptation, and state of grace.  Each picture here represents at least one of the 3 states of literacy.  In the top right, this photo shows the state of grace, because Jack is believed to be someone of importance to a tribe of people.  These people in the movie begin to worship him, and prepare to set his soul free.  To the tribal people it is a state of grace for them to participate in the ceremony and do this.  For people to create these types of images, it can almost be a state of grace for them to create fan art, and other things relating to the POTC fandom. 

The top left photo shows literacy as power, due to the fact Jack is holding Elizabeth hostage.  Of course anyone who holds someone hostage has a bargaining chip, and can bargain for what they want.  Any one in the fandom community can bargain with another fandom goer.  It would like trading services, such as mowing the yard for money, or to help them make fandom art if the other buys dinner. 

Literacy as adaptation is referenced in the bottom left picture since every pirate in the world was at war with the East India Trading Co.  The pirates were at war in this movie, and had adapted and learned to be secretive so that the soldiers wouldn’t know who were pirates, or if they were meeting.  The pirates tried to keep themselves a secret from the soldiers but ended up at war with them.  In the fandom community the fans sometimes have to learn to adapt to a new situation.  This could be something as simple as the website they are members of changing or making new rules that the fans don’t agree with.  It could be something like new rules being implemented at a fandom convention where, they could no longer dress like the characters they most liked.

So I have posted this once before, but.. I am re-blogging it for English.  So in this picture literacy as adaptation is portrayed.  The soldier looking through the spyglass at the ship blowing up is accurate of how people in fandom or even on social media act.  Since everyone has their own opinion and is on social media, we get lots of advice on how to do things.  In turn we see people call each other names, and say not so nice things on these sites, whether in a fandom or facebook, it happens.  Our society has learned to adapt to having arguments on social media sites, and in fandom communities, and some people sit back and watch what unfolds.  That is why this fan art accurately portrays what can happen between people in a fandom when they get in an argument. People don’t want to be a part of the drama so they sit back in the comfort of their home from afar, and watch the drama unfold.

PB 8

So I have spent most of the day trying to finish up my survey and get it right.  Tomorrow I have to work so I won’t have much time to work on it there, but maybe we won’t be too busy where I can still finish it or touch it up if I need to.  My survey is done, this is my second blog post, and I have to find one more artifact, and write some field notes on them.  I think I have been doing that all along and probably didn’t realize it.  I wish I could count those as my field notes.  I am so ready to be done with school.  I will have so much more free time, and can do so much more.  I am currently on track to finish and graduate at the end of Summer 2.  I have to take 9hours in both summer semesters but I am looking at taking another firefighters spot at another station, which will give me a little more free time at work to work on school work.  I have spent lots of time trying to find other images, and blogs, about my fandom.  What has slowed me down is the face that it has been several years since the release of the last movie, so there hasn’t been much fan participation anywhere.  Hopefully it doesn’t make it much harder to find people to answer my survey, or help with in my research.  I hope to finished everything for this module tonight, and send it for review, and turn it in.

I am re-blogging this for my Eng 2 paper.  It shows literacy as power because a woman can have tremendous power over a man in several ways.  In this particular fan art, you see Elizabeth Swan holding a pistol which is showing she has power over someone due to the firearm.  In the movie she holds someone at gun point so that she gets what she wants, and gets out alive.  In other parts of the movies, she has the ultimate power of being a woman and being able to use her wittiness to the best of her ability to get what she wants.  For instance in one movie she kisses Jack Sparrow in order to distract him long enough to handcuff him so that he is eaten by a sea animal.  There are a few other ways how power is portrayed, in one clip she is held as a captive on a ship, and she has no way of getting off, except through the bargaining power of the cursed gold coin. 

All a woman has to do is bat her pretty eyes, and usually a guy gives in.  I think that literacy as power is shown through out the movies in more ways than one.  Elizabeth has a lot of Power in the movies in many ways.  She has power as the Governor’s daughter, to being “king of the brethren court”, even to holding a gun to someones head.

PB 7

So I am sitting here wondering what in the world did I get myself into.  Pirates of the Caribbean fandom, is kind of to work with because I can’t seem to find much since it has been several years since the release of the last movie made.  There is another sequel to be released 2017 but I have seen something that said summer of 2016.  Either way I am not sure, since there seems to be a typo.  I am currently trying to find 5-7 pictures or artifacts from my fandom that others may have created, to compose my “picture essay.”  I hope that my WA3 is on topic, and that My WA4 (which I am hoping is the Picture essay due to the way I understood the directions in the writing links on e-college,) and that my WA4 is also on topic this time.  Professor P. has been more than patient with me and willing to work with my on my mistake.  I appreciate that very much.  I hope that things go smoothly this last couple of weeks.  I am looking at taking Eng 2332 because I have to.  Hopefully it will be “easy.”  I have been busy with the wedding which was a couple of weeks ago and hopefully now that I am caught up with class things will settle down, and I can focus on the last WA and finish up school this summer, and graduate.  I need to finish this up so that I can eat, and then work on this WA some more.  The one thing I am kind of stuck on is the consent form, and question survey.  I am not sure how it is supposed to work.  Do I cut copy and paste the url and send it so that it can be answered by those to be interviewed?? I think I am about to send an email so I can figure it out and continue with this work in this module.

I am re-blogging this again, because I have been re-blogging things for class not really knowing that I was doing it slightly wrong.  I get married tomorrow and this made me think of my wedding.  Pirates love to drink, so I think that This meme was made because who ever made it probably likes to drink as well.  In this meme, you could make an argument that, Jack Sparrow is causing confusion and making a scene in an attempt to try and find a time to escape.

I want to re-blog this again because pirates are unique, and why Jack Sparrow is the way he Is, I would really like to know.  It is almost as if he leaves you hanging in suspense, and wanting more.  Here he is telling a military man he was rooting for him in the sense of him getting the girl.  But as we all know that didn’t happen, almost as an act of piracy itself.  Jack is very intriguing because if his enemy is the military, why would he tell him he was rooting for him?? If you are familiar with the movies, this is a scene in the first one just, before Jack Sparrow escapes imprisonment and “an appointment with the gallows,” again.

Progress Blog #6

Sooo.... I hope that we aren’t being graded on punctuation on social media although this is for an English class.. lol Oh well! So as I sit here and write this, I have lots running through my mind.  I get married in 2 days (Saturday) and will be gone for a week after that.. I know that this will be the first time that ALL of my Eng 1302 work will be done a few days before the deadline.  It has been stressful to do school work, take part in planning a wedding, and work full time.  I have no idea where I have found time but somewhere I have managed, and seem to be doing just fine. I am a little concerned about one thing though.  I originally planned to trade papers with one girl, and then another posted her paper, and I started this 3 way trade.  After tomorrow I won’t be around a computer to do anything so I don’t know If I will have my review back in time to turn in to the teacher.  I have a million thoughts running through my head right now, from wedding to school, to potential job opportunities, and life changes..  I also have ran into a problem with trying to complete my degree by the end of the summer.  I hope that the Dean will approve to let me take 1 extra class to be done.  I hope that my plan works out.  I have a few emails to send now....

Progress Blog #5

So as I am sitting here at work, I am thinking to myself that this is Spring Break, and I just finished up my Eco hw, and completed my 8wk BAAS course and I’m now done with that class.  I need to start reading my books, so that I can be caught up with class.  I have also spent the greater part of the last week going up to the In-laws lake house on Caddo checking on the house, and some of the things there at the house since it flooded.  We had water up to 20inches in some places and 16 inches in others inside of the house.  I am trying to get ahead in this class, because I get married in 2 weeks, and would like to be able to try and work ahead, just before the wedding.  I am taking off the week before and will be off for like 3 weeks total.  I hope i can watch POTC movies, and look more into my fandom.  Unfortunately,  I turned my WA2 paper in a few hours before I got my grade from the first one, and made a comment about looking into real pirates in the First paper, and did the same on the second paper.  Professor P. actually wrote that I can only stick with POTC and not real pirates.  Soo.... I will probably be docked for mentioning about real pirates again, but I turned in my paper before I got the first grade back so maybe she won’t be too hard on me there..   I have wayyy too much stuff going on from now until April 15.  After that things will start to slow down.  One another note, if anyone can answer this question... how many hours can you take total, all SUMMER semesters combined in a year??  That is something else that has been on my mind lately.  ARRRRRR mate!!!  I guess it is time for me to make like a pirate, and jump ship on to something else....

PB #4

okay so, here goes everything that is on my mind and has been over the last 4-5 days.  So Friday I was at work  and up late working, and not able to sleep or work on anything.  I had actually finished most of everything on Thursday, even written my paper, at least on paper, and then typed it out Friday.  I then got my paper to my partner after that, and got his Saturday.  Reviewed his today, and got that back to him today as well.  So I was sitting by the lake today and thinking about this paper, and pirates, and what they do.  I tried to imagine what it would be like to be one during the times of wooden ships and cannons.  What has held me up on this paper, is Full time job, part time job, planning a wedding and taking 18 hours, this semester.  At least one of my classes is an 8 week course, so it ends in a couple of days!!!!  15 hours is still a load, but at least in a couple of weeks, things will start to slow way down.  The wedding is in a couple of weeks, and completing a class will really help me focus, more on these other 5 classes, and the last 5 classes I have to take this summer.
