Rest In Peace Orlando Victims

I’m still crying over the tragedy that struck Orlando. I live in Tampa, a neighboring city to Orlando, and while I do not personally know any of the victims I know many people who did, and the lives of more than just 49 people were ruined that night. What happened in Orlando could have happened in anywhere and 49 amazing people lost their lives just because of who they were.

Now a lot of blame is being thrown around on social media towards radical islam, terrorism, homophobia, mental illness, the FBI not doing their job, and even politics and borders. In reality this was both domestic terrorism and a hate crime toward the LGBT community, done by a bipolar man influenced by radical islam. There is no one area to blame for this man’s decisions; but multiple. However none of the motives in this instance are issues that we can fix in the short term; it could be centuries before civilization is able to fully cure mental illness and achieve world peace. Until then we must focus all of our attention on the best way to save lives now, and the obvious answer here has to do with guns.

I’ve seen many people argue on social media and in person that this isn’t about guns at all, but in truth guns play a huge part in the level of devastation that occurred not only in Orlando, but in the many other mass shootings that have taken place in the past couple decades. While motives and victims change from mass murderer to mass murderer, the one constant is always the killer’s weapon of choice, which is guns. Its important to note that the total number of lives in the Boston Bombing (3) are just a blip in the radar when compared to the hundreds of lives lot because of guns, and no weapon causes even close to the same devastation that guns can cause. The United States actually leads the world in both total number of guns per person and total number of gun deaths, and there is an obvious direct correlation. Now I have many friends who own guns that include assault rifles and I’ve had discussions with them and arguments with many others out the topic of gun control. But there is just no evidence that the prevalence of guns actually saves more lives than it takes away; in fact all the evidence supports the opposite. Like I said before there is no country in the world with as many guns as the US nor with as many mass shootings as us.

With each mass shooting our society endures comes more tears, more heartache, more anger and a growing call for change. Americans need to get over their love for guns and accept that while domestic terrorism and hate crimes happen everywhere, they happen with nowhere near the same devastation and loss of life taking place in the the most gun happy country in the world. When the 9/11 attacks happened our country underwent radical reform to airport security to make sure nothing like that happens ever again, and its time that same radical reform be aimed at gun culture. Yes its true that most gun owners are law abiding citizens, but the sheer number of guns available in the US makes it way too easy for the deranged wanna be mass murderers to get their hands on one and ruin the lives of hundreds of people in in an instant. I wish there was an easy solution to ending gun culture but the ironic truth is that with each mass murder comes even more people who buy into the false sense of security that adding more guns can bring, and the higher the likelihood of the next occurrence grows. How many innocent people have to die before gun culture is eradicated, if that ever even happens? It saddens me that I don’t have an answer for that and don’t think I ever will.
