The real irony is there is plenty of fanfiction that goes through more rigorous editing than some published fiction. So the difference in quality between fanfiction and “professional writing” is totally arbitrary and made up. Except that some things that are more expensive are worse.

The reason fanfiction gets an (undeserved) reputation for being bad writing is that you have ALL levels of writers writing in the same space, some of them still learning their craft without the benefit of a full-time editor.

Fanfiction is such an intensely valuable and amazing community. There’s a reason I support it so much and so vehemently. It’s a way to start writing. It’s a way to be bad at writing safely, and to express your art in a community that loves you for it.

I spend hours reading fic. I read more fic than ‘actual books’ and find more joy in fic than I ever did in ‘actual books’. There are fics I’ve followed for twenty years, just hoping that maybe they’ll be updated. there are other’s I’ve kept for twenty years and reread a hundred times because I love them so much. I would buy them if they were printed out.

Fanfiction is art, and I will fight anyone who thinks otherwise.
