Episode twenty of Fruits Basket and we have our first real punk of a zodiac to deal with. Sure, Kyo can be difficult, but Hiro makes his antics look like nothing.

In terms of introductions, Hiro’s feels like a completely alien experience, finding Tohru on the street and being a complete jerk, not giving her a chance to collect her thoughts before stealing her pocketbook and running off. Kyo ends up being the next one to find the nuisance, asking what he was doing before Momiji and Kisa appear to confront him further. The whole ordeal felt well constructed, tied together with the punishment of being transformed through a hug by Tohru.

The later portion of the episode focused on Hiro’s connection with Kisa, giving each a lot more depth than we previously were provided. The idea that this one’s confession of love to the head of the house led to the bullying that caused Kisa so much pain felt like a nice extension of what we already know of the family. I know I’ve seen mentions of a curse, but why must everyone suffer so much?

All around, an enjoyable episode, and there was an editor sighting too!

Loved this Anime since it came out with its first version. But the newer one I have to is a much better.
