The best thing about dating: Becoming best friends. Getting to know all their little quirks and favorite habits. Listening to the tone of their voice raise when they speak about their passions. Sharing secrets and reminiscing on childhood experiences. Learning their fears and planning dreams and making a middle school love-struck dream come true. Finding someone who wants you like a drug they are becoming addicted to. Finding someone who looks at you like you put the stars in the sky. Finding someone who is captivated by you and focused on you like a child with a new, shiny toy.
The worst thing about dating: Going from being best friends to absolute strangers. You know nothing about who that person is now or who they will become. All those experiences and conversations about hopes and goals become mere memories. You will never know if they accomplished all that they told you they wanted to. You lose your favorite confidante, your most trusted partner in adventures. The person you let in to discover all of your secrets becomes someone you will never talk to again. And the worst part is you blindly and idly watched it all unravel: like a child who gradually becomes bored with her new toy, you watched as you were placed back on the shelf.
And so, the world keeps spinning and it’s just the circle of life.
