Rafael’s lunchtime haunt was lowly lit and not very populated, as usual. The perfect spot to recollect his thoughts. (Plus that it was the sort of place to attract customers that generally laid outside of the meme-making demographic.) He took advantage of his extended lunchbreak in the relaxed watering hole by cutting into a grilled salmon, served with a small glass of scotch.

Normally, he reserved this type of beverage for the end of the work day. But after experiencing what was practically a breath of fresh air after nearly a month of drowning in a sea of jokes, poor Spanish, and sexualizations of his most unremarkable features, he felt he needed it. Just a tiny bit to assure that he had some kind of comfort in case it turned out that he had hallucinated that Lauren Carradine.

And yet, he was certain he hadn’t. Extremely certain, in fact. Sure, the Internet was freaking him out, but he highly doubted that it would be memes that would drive him beyond the brink of sanity and not anything else his job required him to face. If they had, then perhaps it was time to consider moving to a different field of focus.

Hi there! I love your writing I’ve reread all your Barba stuff probably 10 times literally. Could you maybe do something with Rafael telling his mom about the woman he loves? Like him describing why he loves her or thinks she’s “the one”? I feel like that’s the kind of fluff I need in my life right now. Thanks!

This didn’t come out as incredible long, but I really hope this is what you were looking for. I love fluffy Rafael too, and I loved writing this!

Sunday afternoons were always reserved for his mother. It had been that way since he’d moved back to New York from Boston. Even when he’d been at the DA’s office in Brooklyn, he always met with his beloved mother every Sunday afternoon for lunch and coffee without fail. Except for last Sunday.

You and he had gone to an opera the night before, and out for cheesecake and coffee afterwards to discuss the show. Perhaps it was the fact that you’d chosen a 24 hour diner to have this in-depth analysis of Le Nozzi Di Figaro, but by the time the two of you decided to head home, it was nearly 3 am. The next morning you’d slept in, had coffee together in his living room in front of the fire, talked about whether to plan a trip for the coming holidays, and after you agreed on a getaway, were trying to decide on whether to go somewhere tropical or a cabin up north.

He hadn’t even realized that the time had come and gone for his usual lunch date with his mother until he went to check his phone and saw the fifty four missed calls from his mother…and the time. Immediately, he called her back, already anticipating the tongue lashing she would bestow upon him.

“Oye, I almost called the morgue to see if you were dead,” she said when she picked up, apparently choosing to forgo her usual pleasantries.

Frankly, it had to have been when Lucia got involved that Rafael knew things were going too far. Even Carmen of all people was beginning to join in on the fun! (While Rafael really did appreciate the cup of coffee waiting for him when he came into work that morning, but did she really have to include the receipt bearing the name “Abo-guapo”?) And all at once, it appeared that the dam keeping his cohorts in SVU at bay had buckled under pressure – and the typhoon of fresh, new memes.

The initial, unspoken agreement had been to not bring up memes around Rafael or to laugh about them in his presence. But it didn’t take long for Sonny to throw caution straight into the garbage and use the technical loophole of sending him his latest finds (though, always making sure to precede them with at least one contribution to the case). It didn’t take long for the likes of Fin, Rollins, and even Liv every once in a while, to follow suit in some way shape or form.
