#truly the most interesting way to read her#is as a comphet lesbian who is trying everything in her might to repress her queerness and is failing miserably yes yes yes! It is deeply comphet lesbian to me too. Mary is obsessed with tradition and rules because it makes navigating what doesn't come to her naturally easier. She's learned that attention from men is power, marriage is safety, and flirtation lets her control things and control is survival. Mary likes attention from men because she likes the power that it provides, not because she actually likes them. Each of Mary's suitors represent a possible future presented by society rather than a person that she genuinely likes. I think Matthew complicates things because Matthew is one of the few men who treats Mary like an equal and doesn't really mean to control or diminish her. Matthew defers a lot to Mary in ways other men do not. Matthew reached Mary through trust, rivalry, grief, humour, and a sense of responsibility. He challenges her without diminishing her, but he didn't chase her which is what made it different. Despite the comphet, I think Mary did genuinely love Matthew not only because she loved who she was with him and how wanted/desired he made her feel, but because he treated her like an equal. In my opinion, Mary's other central conflict is that she feels robbed of being the eldest son. Mary's behaviour is incredibly subversive and gender non-conforming from the beginning, but it's only validated fully in the later seasons (ex. the scene where Robert tells Mary he's proud to see his daughter is no longer a child and is more than capable to run the estate and her voice cracks when she asks if he means that). Mary wants the privileges and power afforded to men, but she wouldn't want to be a man. Mary's brand of femininity is incredibly queer to me despite how much she holds onto tradition and rules as I mentioned at the start.

I’ve been wanting to make this edit ever since I saw the last movie… they really separated after basically growing up together… I don’t think Downton will ever feel like a real home to Mary again…

These two really went to hell and back together and they want me to believe they’d ever be able to adjust to a life where they don’t see each other every day… they literally told each other stuff before they told their family and significant others. I truly believe neither of them ever really gets used to being apart, and one day Mary is going to wake up sweating, and will realise that those feelings were not Friendship Feelings, but that she’s actually been in love with Anna for as long as she can remember, but since Anna was basically her only friend and they spent so much time together from such a young age, she never realised till her absence became too much to bear.
