Be Alert for Phishing on Tumblr

It’s not the genre of my usual posts, but I thought it might be helpful to remind everyone that phishing is always a risk when online. It can be easy to dismiss as something you would never fall for, but if in a rush or not thinking clearly, anyone can be the victim of phishing, and it’s worthwhile refreshing our memory to make sure more vulnerable users are aware of the warning signs.

This morning, I was tagged in an odd comment. There were many red flags that made me dismiss this as a phishing post, but I’ve highlighted some below.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check out the post. There were comment after comment in the same vein as the above, tagging a series of random users in each. The post itself reads well, and if in a rush, or if a more vulnerable user is targeted, it could be easily fallen for.

One thing that stood out to me was that the link present appeared to be legitimate in spite of the remaining red flags. However, hovering over the link (or pressing and holding on mobile) will show the real URL this will lead to. The attacker has typed the Tumblr link manually, but embedded a different link on top. A bit like this: thisis.areallink.com/promise

Be cautious not to accidentally visit the site when verifying the link. It is safer to report it if you notice any red flags without verifying the link.

This is where you should stop and report the post, but for curiosity's sake, let’s put this malicious address into a sandbox environment to see what the attacker's aim is.

If clicked, this will redirect you to another page.

When I first tried this to submit in the report, a pop-up appeared, redirecting me to a page where I was prompted to enter my bank details. When I went back to take screenshots, the pop-up no longer appeared, but this may be an issue with the sandbox environment I was using.

To report posts as phishing, press the three dots in the top right-hand of the post, then select Report Post > Report Something Else > Unlawful Uses or Content > Phishing.

Last Song Listened To: If I Knew You Were Comin' (I’d've Baked a Cake) - I like listening to this one whilst baking! It never fails to put a spring in my step :)

Favourite Colour: It really does depend! I love rich wood tones, but I do also like myself a good natural green too! There are so many colours I love in all their shades, especially in flowers, but I’d better leave it as is before this post becomes too long!

Currently Watching: Call the Midwife! I’m on S5 and I have some ✨theories✨. I have a BAD feeling about Sister Evangelina, I'm not convinced she’ll still be with the show next season :(

Currently Reading: Do newspapers count? I’m reading through a lot of newspapers published in Dublin on June 7th 1919 at the minute for something I’m working on.

Current Obsession: Always history, currently very much enjoying reworking the Tom and Sybil story for S3 onwards as it’s helping me to learn more about the 20s-30s which is an era I don’t know as much about :)

Currently Working On: Too many things! My main ones are a Van Gough inspired take on the Garden Party and a newspaper clipping for Tom and Sybil's 107th wedding anniversary (which I missed, OOPS!) Otherwise, it’s definitely my LSL posts (they’re very long and I’m trying to pack in as much detail as possible, each come with at least eight drawings and a lot of research!) I also have a few stories I’m writing but I’m debating whether to post them or wait until my writing improves!

I had guessed that Trixie and Tom's engagement wouldn’t last.

I had even guessed that Barbara and Tom would ultimately get married.

But NOTHING could have prepared me for the shock of seeing THIS on the page in front of me.
