Smoking’ Hot Type
While I’ve never smoked, and would discourage anyone from doing so, there was an age of innocence and exuberance around tobacco. Smoking pipes and cigarettes was a sign of sophistication and your choice of brand was another way to project your identity.
I assume, like the perfume industry, the product was incredibly cheap to produce and sold for large profits, therefore consumers had to be convinced of its luxury through with catching packaging.
Many of the above packages above are from W.D. & H.O. Wills of Bristol, England, which was founded in 1786. These likely date from the late Victorian period, as the company merged in 1901. With this in mind, the vividness of colours, including metallics, the number of colours printed together and the lettering quality are very impressive.
These beautiful examples were collected in a scrapbook by an unidentified enthusiast and are now being looked after by Clint Harvey who kindly allowed me to photography them.
Whitman Illuminated: Song of Myself
Illustrator, Allen Crawford, has produced this fabulous hand lettered version of Walt Whitman’s iconic poem. The entire 256-page book has been drawn by entirely by hand with each page focussing on a particular verse.
Since it was published a couple of years ago it has since won two illustration awards; one from International Illustration and one from the Society of Illustrators. You can get a copy here.
Spooky Sweets Café This project was really fun (I wish it were real). I love me some fun pastel colors and branding ♥︎

This exquisite Garamond specimen (this being ATF Garamond) was produced by Rising Hammond Typographers in Los Angeles. It is not dated, but based on the contents I’d guess late 1920s or early 1930s.
Jurriaan Schrofer: Graphic Designer, Pioneer Of Photobooks / Available at www.draw-down.com / Designed by Karel Martens and Jaap van Triest. 422 pages. The Dutch designer and polymath Jurriaan Schrofer (1926–1990) was one of the defining figures in European graphic design in the 1950s–70s. Working across all genres, from public relations brochures to interior design, and from magazines to advertising and alphabets, Schrofer is particularly regarded as a pioneer in the field of photo books and experimental typography. During the 1970s, he also became involved with government art policy and environmental art. The design historian Frederike Huygen describes Schrofer’s work as “research into perception, visual effects and the optical illusion of perspective: or the interplay of letterform, pattern and meaning.” This monograph tracks Schrofer’s career through a set of thematic chapters: his public relations brochures for various corporations; the photo book designs; his work as a cultural ambassador; advertising design; interior design; art policy and education; typographic experiments; and his art works. This monograph provides a full survey of Schrofer’s career. #graphicdesign #typography #karelmartens #JurriaanSchrofer #Photobooks #GraphicDesigner #Europeangraphicdesign #alphabets #experimentaltypography #Schrofer #design
