Tips to ensure your tree's survival!
If you are interested in planting trees and want to do it right, here are six ways you could be dong it wrong: • Planting too high or too low: There should be a flare at the bottom of the trunk. Plant so that the flare is level to the ground. The hole should be two to three times as wide as the pot and • Forgetting to mulch: New trees should get two to three buckets - about 8 cm deep - of natural wood chips to keep moisture in soil, reduce weeds that compete for nutrients. Over time mulch breaks down and replenishes soil. • Piling mulch like a volcano around the trunk: Mulch should not touch the trunk; it causes moisture build-up and rot. Instead, create a ring around the base of the tree… • Failing to water: Newly planted trees depend on regular watering - a slow trickle a couple of times a week best, for 15 minutes at a time. • Pouring water from a hose: Especially with clay soil, it takes a long time for water to get to the roots. Use a soaker hose or watering can to allow the water to slowly infiltrate ground around the trunk. • Pointing a hose at the tree’s trunk: Rather than soaking the base of the trunk, spread water by aiming it at the mulch ring that circles the area.
