Michael Reynolds, the inventor of Earthships, has been a world leader in sustainable architecture for over 40 years. He designs and builds fully self-sufficient homes made from a significant amount of natural and recycled materials. These homes are called Earthships and have been built around the world. Earthships heat and cool themselves passively, produce their own electricity, collect their own water, treat their own sewage and grow a significant amount of their own food. Michael is responsible for the design and systems evolutions, leading his team on disaster relief projects around the world, the initiator of three Earthship communities, author of seven books, subject of the feature length documentary, Garbage Warrior, and the drafter of the Sustainable Development Testing Sites Act.

Landing on the Island

The island will go from zero people to about fifty people in one week. This means many human (and island) needs must be met.

The first most immediate human need is a place for fifty people to shit. The island needs fertile soil. We will put these two needs together and make soil plugs.

The soil plugs will line the pathways of electric island transportation vehicles. The result will be foliage lined pathways for electrics carts to carry people and luggage from the dock to all parts of the island.

The soil plugs are made by hand digging a four foot diameter hole four feet deep. The hole is lined with thick rubber material called EPDM to contain the new soil and separate it from everything else. A tent will be placed over the rubber lined hole with a platform and toilet seat installed in the tent to fully cover the hole. The dirt from the hole will be placed in buckets inside the tent for scooping back into the hole with every use of the toilet. The dirt will be used to cover the shit and paper using at least three times the volume of dirt to shit. Compost of any kind from general island plants to food scraps can be added at will.

When the hole is filled to within a foot from the top the tent is moved to the next lined hole.

Eventually we will have built wooden toilet huts on wheels to move along as the plugs fill.

The first hole is then filled the rest of the way with dirt leaving a swale (valley) to invite water from rains to stay over the hole and soak down into the new “soil” that is forming.  The result is a “plug” of rich soil which can be planted with indigenous island plants. These plants can be expected to grow much faster than normal plants.

The idea have is to cause existence of people on the island to enhance the island rather than detract from it. Trees enhance the earth. Their presence makes the earth better. We want people to enhance this island. We want the presence of people to make this island better. This is the approach to development of Earthship Island.

EARTHSHIP EURO TOUR AS IT RELATES TO EARTHSHIP ISLAND INITIAL APPROACH

The upcoming Earthship Biotecture Euro Tour will present to various venues in Europe forty-five years of work developing the Earthship concept.  The history, the successes, the failures, the battles, the barriers, the current state of the art.  It will present the growth and development of a virtual Earthship Army…  not out of design but out of unstoppable interest in this direction of thinking on this planet at this time.  

Earthship Biotecture does not claim to have all or any of the “answers” to problems with life on Earth,  we are simply addressing them on a grass roots level in the hopes of finding a better way… and that “way” is opening up like a “yellow brick road”.

The latest opening is the opportunity to “settle” a virgin island.   We will get to apply all  principals learned from forty-five years of trying to get closer to the right way to live on this jewel of a planet they we are all lucky enough to find ourselves on.  We have made a “deal” on a jewel island in Indonesia.  It is almost sacred ground and we will approach it that way.  We will start by dealing  with the essentials… comfortable shelter, water, energy, human waste, food and garbage and we will not stop.   We will deal with these issues in a way that is exemplary  of how life could be on this planet.  We are not faced with “changing things” on this island as it is uninhabited.  We will be creating the life on this island.  We are looking for adventurous souls who can put  a good life on Earth for all humans  in front of any definitions they may have for themselves.

To this end the European Earthship Tour will go through Europe  and on to the beginning of a new way of life on this Earth on Earthship Island.

Hello Everyone Earthship,

It is looking like Earthship Biotecture will be developing an Earthship Island in Indonesia. The  purpose will be to demonstrate sustainable living technologies in an effort to direct future development from destroying the coral reefs.  At this time the waters around the island of Kenawa are crystal clear.  We intend to demonstrate how tourists and developers can have everything without threatening the crystal clear waters.  This project will be ongoing and will include establishing a branch of the Earthship Academy centered around the development of Earthship Island.  We are at this time gauging the interest in this project.  We are planning a full on one month Earthship Academy session in February 2017.  Prior to that we are looking at a pilot project “Earthship Landing Module” to be built on the island in November 2016.  We will be inviting about thirty people to learn along with Michael Reynolds to lay the “corner stone” on this magical project.  The landing module project will require a $1,500 participation fee for a three week build right on the beach without creating one speck of damage to the island or the waters.  We are now accepting letters of interest to select the right thirty people to launch this project.

WILD FLOWERS  AND GROOMED GARDENS

In the plant world there are many mountain valleys and rolling hills covered with wild flowers. Rampant uncontrolled  with flowers herbs and more..

When humans became involved with plants we began to see structured, groomed gardens… also beautiful because it is hard for plants not to be beautiful.

We appreciate both.

In the human world there is very little freedom to allow humans to live in wild rampant creative  beauty.

We only have structured, groomed developments controlled and regulated by entities that sometimes do not see further than the rules they are charged with enforcing.

We can appreciate the structured, groomed developments as they embody a certain order that has certain merits.

We also need to designate areas that allow individual humans to live the way their imaginations, intuitions and inspirations lead them.  

We need to appreciate both of these scenarios.

This is what the New Mexico Sustainable Testing Site Act is about - allowing some mountain valleys and rolling hills to be covered with the rampant beauty of individual humans using logic, imagination, intuition and inspiration to create sustainable lives for themselves and their families not necessarily within the corral of existing regulatory mechanisms.

Maybe we will all learn something here as our existing structured and groomed developments are not fully pointing toward a sustainable future… or any future for that matter.
