Prepare yourself: The level of talent on display in the video below is nothing short of mind-blowing.

Today, a Youtube user named AlRosePromotions uploaded a never-aired 2000 VH1 pilot starring producer/composer extraordinaire Jon Brion. The program takes on the form of a music session show, with a jovial Brion acting as host.

The pilot is incredible for several reasons. First, the show is directed by There Will Be Blood and The Masterfilmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (Brion had recently composed the score for Anderson’s Magnolia). Second, the inaugural guest is none other than late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith.

Dog is Dead - Glockenspiel Song

Dog is Dead’s debut album released in October and it’s exactly what I’m looking for in indie pop. I feel like I have to do more sorting through indie bands nowadays to find the ones that have original sounds. Dog is Dead does catchy the right way for me. They have a very Noah and the Whale/Bombay Bicycle Club feel to them. My biggest problem is that they don’t have their stuff on Spotify; I actually listen to them over and over on Soundcloud.

Glockenspiel Song was the first one I heard by them and surprisingly not through Skins since I stopped halfway through the second cast. I can totally see why it would be used in there though: “We are a mess, we are failures and we love it”. That’s pretty much their motto. I digress. Dog is Dead shows a lot of promise with their first album and I think they’re definitely on the right track to becoming one of the biggest names in indie pop.

Lorine Chia - “Crazy Things”

Lorine Chia’s new mixtape is fantastic, soundtracking one of what I’m sure will be many late night work sessions this week. The real standout is album opener “Crazy Things”, which utilizes an Ellie Goulding sample to turn “Lights”, a song about Goulding’s childhood fear of the dark, into a song about a toxic adult relationship that the singer recognizes is problematic. The vocal gymnastics created by the harmonies and production during the song’s breakdown really mirror the internal back and forth during a difficult breakup. The mixtape is up for free on her website. Grab it.

Bad Television is a Post-Emo Math Roll Revival band based in Saline, Michigan. Whit Fineberg is lead vocals and plays guitar, Henry DeLaurier plays guitar, Niraj Patel plays drums and back-up vocals, and Mike Webb plays bass. 

"We are like the underground scene... of Saline. Occasionally our name gets muttered in grungy bathroom stalls, but for the most part the citizens of saline are deaf to our melodic strains of static."
