It was a cheery night in the Burrow. Fred, George, Ron, Ginny, Harry, Hermione, and Mr. Weasley all sat around the table enjoying a delicious supper made by the one and only Molly Weasley. There was laughter, conversation, and love exuding from the table. Molly beamed at her family. She was always so happy when her children returned from Hogwarts. The Burrow was far too quiet with out them. Suddenly, Molly heard a noise that pulled her out of her thoughts. “Every one be quiet” she said. The table followed her command and a hush fell over them. She heard it again. It was a knock at the door. “Who could that be so late?” Molly questioned as she stood from the table. Although no one else stood, they all leaned as far as they could to catch a glimpse of the stranger at the door. When Molly pulled open the door, she was met with the sight of a teenage girl. She was wearing a black turtle neck, an oversized jean jacket, black jeans, and black boots with purple laces. The girl was soaking wet. Apparently, it had been raining. The atmosphere in the kitchen had been so sunny, she hadn’t noticed the sudden down pour. “Please Ma’am, may I come in, I’m in terrible trouble”.
“Thats odd” Molly thought. The girl had an American accent. What was she doing here? The girl was crying and trembling slightly and kept checking over her shoulder as if she was expecting someone to come running after her. Molly poked her head out of the door and looked both ways. She saw torch lights moving swiftly towards the house. She looked at the girl. “Come in dear” she said, pulling the girl into the warm house. Now her family had inched closer, leaving their seats. “What kind of trouble are you in?” Molly asked. The girl looked at Molly’s big family and then back at her. She seemed a trustworthy woman but the girl was unsure if she was the right person to tell. She looked again at the family and this time saw dishes in the sink that were cleaning themselves. This was the right woman. So, the girl told her. “I have a rare gift, even for the wizarding world, and someone put a bounty on me to be delivered who knows where and I need to hide until they pass, please please help me” she said, her trembling worsening.
“It’s ok dear, we’ll keep you safe” Molly said reassuringly. “Harry, give her your invisibility cloak. Ron, wipe down where she was standing so it isn’t wet. You all sit down and act normal. They may try to come in”. The one brown haired boy, apparently named Harry, threw the girl a cloak and she swung it over her body. She then backed her self into a corner and stood as still as she could, barely allowing herself to breathe. Then, the group heard shouts growing louder. The sounds of the hunting party grew nearer and nearer to the Burrow. There was a bang on the door. Molly took a deep breath and opened it. “Can I help you sir?” she said sweetly. “I sure hope so. We’re looking for our uh…sister” the man lied, looking at the other men around him and sniggering. “Have you seen a girl run by here in the last few minutes?” the man finished. “Oh no sorry, I’ve just been having dinner with my family. I didn’t even know it was raining” she smiled. The man looked past her into the kitchen. He then looked at the floor to see if it was wet. “Dry. Damn” he thought. “Alrighty then miss. If you see a girl around here, you call this number” he said, handing her a business card. “Of course, we wouldn’t want a child out in this weather!” Molly said cheerfully. “Damn she’s good at lying” the girl thought. The men began to retreat and Molly closed the door. She sat back at the table and continued on with the meal as if the disturbance had never happened. The others were confused at first but played along with Molly’s act. Five minutes passed, then ten, then twenty. The girl was still holding her breath. Finally, Molly stood up and closed all the blinds and put a silencing charm on the room.
“Alright, safe now” Molly said. Everyone exhaled. The girl pulled off the cloak. “I can’t begin to thank you enough for that” the girl said. “Now now don’t start that. First, let’s get you by the fire. Fred, will you get her a blanket?” One of the many redheaded boys nodded and made his way to a cupboard. “I’ll make some tea” the brown haired girl said. Molly smiled at her. The girl went and sat by the fire, feeling the heat made some of her trembling stop. The large group gathered around her. “I’ll do introductions” Molly said. “I’m Molly Weasley, this is my husband Arthur” she began, pointing to the oldest redhead man. “And these are our children Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny” the rest of the red heads smiled and nodded. “And these are our good friends Harry Potter and Hermione Granger”. “It’s nice to meet you all. My name is Katherine Beck but people usually just call me Beck”. The two adults locked eyes with each other and then looked back at the damp girl in front of them. “Beckett, that sounds familiar,” Hermione said, handing a cup of tea.
“When did you get in the country dear?” Molly asked. Beck took a sip from the warm mug before hugging it close to her chest. “I’m not entirely sure” she began. “The last thing I remember was making my way home after buying some school supplies when something hit my head from behind. I then remember waking up in a small room. It was dark and I didn’t have my wand. I heard voices talking about needing to deliver me somewhere but they were keeping me until they were paid, I think.” She rubbed her forehead, trying to remember what else happened. “And then I realized that the window in the room was unlocked so I climbed out and started running. Then I found you”. “So you’re saying someone paid to have you kidnapped?” Ron asked. She nodded. “Bloody hell” he replied. “What is this rare gift you talked about when you first came in?” Harry asked. Beck looked him up and down. He clearly was no stranger to being attacked by seemingly random assailants, pointing to his question not involving her capture. “I can show you if someone would like to volunteer”. Everyone hesitated, looking at each other sheepishly. “I will” Molly said. “Mum be careful we don’t really know who she is” Ginny said. “Your mother knows more about me than she is telling you which on her behalf is a very smart thing to do” Beck said knowingly. The kids looked at each other, Molly kept her gaze fixed in front of her.
The girl reached out her right hand palm up and Molly placed her hand on top, palm down. Then, the girl touched Molly’s shoulder with her left hand. The room was silent. Beck closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes everyone gasped. Her previously green eyes had turned a brilliant violet color. She moved her left hand from Molly’s shoulder and placed it on top of Molly’s hand. She smiled and appeared to be at ease for a time. Then she suddenly let go and her eyes changed back. They stared. A tear fell slowly down Beck’s cheek. “I haven’t seen so much love in a family in a long time” she said. Molly smiled. “What just happened?” Ron asked. “I have just seen your mothers entire life. Past, present, future, every decision she’s presented with and every choice she makes.” “Wicked” Fred and George said.
“Oh that were I have seen your name! In a divination book! I remember reading about the Beckett’s, a family with a long line of powerful seers” Hermione said. Harry and Ron looked puzzled. “Unfortunately, I may be the last of that line” Beck said. “My dad didn’t have the gift and my mom passed when I was four”. “So that’s why those people are after you” Ron said. She nodded. “Why wait for prophecies to be churned out when you can have your own personal fortune teller?”. The room was silent again. “Do you have any idea who contracted those men to take you?” Arthur asked. Beck shook her head sadly. “Well, you can stay here while we work it out.” Molly said. “Thank you Mrs. Weasley. I am not sure how dangerous those men are so I will only stay for tonight. Tomorrow I have to send word to my dad that I’m safe and get a new wand”. The group laughed a little. “With Harry around, we’re always in danger” Fred said chuckling. “Oh shut up Fred” Ginny replied. “It is kind of true” added George.
Beck eyed Harry suspiciously. “May I have your hand” she asked. Harry nodded and stretched out his hand. She repeated the same process but this time, the reading did not appear as happy as the first. Her head shook side to side a little, and her grip tightened around his hand. When she finally opened her eyes, she gasped for air and pushed herself away from Harry. “What is it?” Harry asked. “There are so many things that you don’t know, that you can’t know, until the right time. But, the right time is going to feel to late but if you learn too soon…there is only darkness” she said, her trembling returning. “If the right timing is met, there will be light” she finished. “Now she sounds like Trelwaney” Ron whispered to Hermione. “I-I’m sorry” she said. She then stood up and started to make for the door. “Thank you for all your kindness but I have over stayed my welcome”. Molly stopped her. “It’s still dark and raining, you aren’t going anywhere”. Beck nodded, not daring to look back at the curious eyes of the group. “You can sleep in Ginny’s room with her and Hermione”. Molly said. Ginny stood up and walked over to Beck. “I think I have some clothes that will fit you, although you are a bit taller than me.” “Or I can have one of the twins give you something” Molly replied with a smile. “Thank you” Beck said.
Later that night, Beck couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the past and future horrors of Harry’s life. She decided a glass of water might calm her nerves. She peeled herself off of the floor and crept over to the door. Luckily, it opened noiselessly and she tip toed out and down the stairs. The shorts Ginny had lent her were much shorter than her liking and the large shirt she had borrowed from George hung down past the ends of the shorts. She felt naked and cold but was still determined to get her glass of water. As she glided across the floor to the kitchen she stopped dead in her tracks. However faint it was, she swore she heard someone breathing. She quickly ducked behind a door and covered her mouth. She could still hear the breathing. Gathering some courage, she peeped out from behind the door. It was the youngest redhead boy. She exhaled and stepped out. He jumped. “Blimey you scared me!” he muttered. “Sorry, I was thirsty and then I heard breathing, I panicked” she said. He gave her a small wave telling her that she was forgiven.
She walked over to the sink and filled up a glass. “Why are you up?” she asked. “Oh uh Harry talks in his sleep and sometimes it’s just easier to get up instead of trying to ignore it”. He sat down at the table. She nodded and hopped up onto the kitchen counter. “It’s so quiet here, how do you stand it?” she asked. “What do you mean stand it?” he asked. “Well, back home there’s constant noise and I don’t know I guess I find it comforting” she said. He nodded. “I guess it’s only this quiet at night. There’s actually seven of us so it’s usually very loud” he chuckled. Beck’s eyes widened. “Seven?! Your mother is a saint” she said, with a tone of awe and shock in her voice. “Mum always wanted a daughter so we all say she just had kids until she got one”. His voice was a bit sad now. He looked out of the window, avoiding eye contact. “Hey,” she said, waiting to continue until he met her eyes. “I’d say she lucked out with her sons too. Don’t forget, I saw life through her eyes which means I’ve seen all of your triumphs and felt the pride she feels in you as well”. This made Ron smile a bit bigger. He always felt like the forgotten son. Even if she was lying about what she saw, it made him feel hopeful.
She sighed and looked side to side. She hopped down off of the counter and joined Ron at the table. “May I?” she asked, stretching out her hand. He picked his hand up but hesitated. “I’m not gonna bite, come on”. He pursed his lips together in a thin smile and placed his hand in hers. When her eyes changed again, the dark allowed Ron to truly see how brilliant her violet eyes were. He couldn’t help but stare at her. When she let go she leaned back in her chair. Her eyes were wide and Ron could see she was thinking about something. “What?” he asked. She bit her lip and then leaned closer to him. “I shouldn’t be telling you this but here’s a tip for your future,” she began. Ron leaned in too, eager to hear wha she had to say. “You should listen to Harry when he sleep talks. One day, you might need to use something you hear”. She leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms, a smile spreading across her face. Ron was still leaning forward, now raising his eye brow at her. He then leaned back slowly. “Why’d you tell me that?” he asked, crossing his arms. She shrugged. “Truth?”. He nodded. “When I read you and looked into your life, for the first time I saw myself having an impact on your choices. When I looked into your mother’s life, I didn’t see myself. I thought I saw myself in Harry’s life but I wasn’t sure. But now I am sure. It looks like me and your families lives are becoming intertwined the longer I stay here. I saw myself giving you important information that would be used later. So, I did”.
Ron tilted his head, showing he was a bit puzzled. “So, have you ever seen yourself in someone else’s life, like, changing stuff?” he asked. She shook her head. “Not even in your friends lives?” Beck looked down, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Oh um, I-” but before she could answer, a creak came from the staircase. “Thats mum” Ron said. He grabbed her hand and pulled her behind a door. “She’ll be peeved if she catches us out of bed”. The two squeezed tightly together behind the door, hoping the Weasley matriarch hadn’t heard them. Then, they heard Molly open the front door and let someone in. “Alastor, Remus thank you for coming.” Beck looked at Ron. “Ron who are those people?” Ron looked at her in shock. He heard her speak but she hadn’t moved her mouth. Before he could make a sound, she covered his mouth. “Yes I can speak to people in their head. I can hear you if you respond in your head. I’ll give you the rest of the details later. I just need to know if I’m in danger”. Ron shook his head. “No, you’re safe” he said. The two turned their attention back to the adults.
“Is it true Molly? What you said in your message, is Katherine Beckett really here?” one of the men said. “Yes. I heard the rumors that she had been discovered but since she was in America I didn’t think any thing of it. Next thing I know, she’s at my door crying saying she’s been kidnapped!” Molly’s voice sounded slightly panicked. “I thought she would be safe when we moved her there, but I guess those damn Death Eaters found her” the other man said, his voice much rougher than the first man’s voice. “Is her father still alive?” Molly asked. Beck held her breath. “He was never her father Molly, you know that” the second man said. Molly clicked her tongue. “He raised her so he’s her father, blood or not. Now is he alive?” There was silence. “Yes, but barely. He was Crucio-ed out of his mind. Just like Frank and Alice” the first man said. Beck stifled a sob. “The poor dear. She’ll be safe here for now but do you know who ordered this?” Molly asked. “The rumor is that Malfoy did but that seems low even for him”. There was more silence. “Alright, you’d two better leave before someone wakes up”. “Right, goodbye Molly”. The two men then exited the house, and Molly crept back up stairs.
Ron and Beck emerged from behind the door. “Who were those people?” she asked. “Mad-Eye Moody and Remus Lupin. Moody was the man with the rougher voice. They’re members of the Order of the Phoenix. They fight…You-Know-Who. Actually I’m surprised Moody didn’t know we were there. His eye is magic, it would have let him know we were here”. She nodded, still reeling at the revelation that her father wasn’t really her father. She sat down at the table. “Are you ok?” Ron asked, sitting beside her. “I…I don’t know. It’s a lot to process” she said. He nodded. He reached out tentatively and grabbed her hand, giving it a squeeze. She looked up at him. Her green eyes shone brightly, the mix of the moonlight and the wetness of tears threatening to fall created a beautiful glimmer. Ron couldn’t help but admire her beauty. She smiled at him. “I think I’m gonna try to go back to sleep now” she said. “Right yeah of course” Ron said, somewhat awkwardly as he let go of her hand. She stood up and walked towards the stairs, pausing before starting the climb and looking back at the redhead. “Goodnight Ron” she said with a shy smile before climbing up the stairs. “Goodnight Beck” Ron said, feeling as if he was in a dream.
