“Many of my movies have strong female leads - brave, self-sufficient girls that don’t think twice about fighting for what they believe in with all their heart. They’ll need a friend, or a supporter, but never a savior. Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.”
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) dir. Hayao Miyazaki
An Education (2009) dir. Lone Scherfig.
The Brontë sisters, with beautiful covers individually designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith.

♬ This week in new music: High As Hope, by Florence + The Machine
Janelle Monae’s Grammy’s look is beyond amazing, holy shit.
“The best characters are always wretchedly flawed.”
- Danai Gurira.
Just some great music recommendations.
Alex Lahey | I Love You Like A Brother
Super talented gal from Melbourne who’s basically taking on the world.
유카리 (Yukari) | Echo
Chilled out music made, sung, performed and produced by one amazingly talented woman.
Feels | Emerald
Great tunes from Perth!
Bjork | Utopia
I don’t know how Bjork still manages to release some of the most interesting music currently being made but I hope she never stops.
Lovesong (2016) dir. So Yong Kim.
Currently reading: Autumn, by Ali Smith.
Ali Smith just has the most beautiful way with words, although the meaning is difficult to read at times here. There are passages throughout the novel where the narrative is hard to follow. The relationship between the protagonist and her elderly neighbour is one of the loveliest I’ve ever read in a book and inspired some beautifully whimsical dialogue.
I can’t wait to read the follow-up, Winter!
Step (2017) dir. Amanda Lipitz.
The senior year of a girls’ high school step team in inner-city Baltimore is documented, as they try to become the first in their families to attend college. The girls strive to make their dancing a success against the backdrop of social unrest in their troubled city.
I caught this stunning documentary at the end of its limited run in Melbourne and am so glad I didn’t miss it. Watching these incredible girls go through their final year of school was a total privilege, and seeing them overcome adversity in so many areas of their lives was one of the most moving things I've seen in quite a while.
“It's another man telling us we can't fill up the room
It's another man telling us to book a smaller venue
'Nah, hey, cmon girls we're only thinking about you'
Well, see how far we've come not listening to you.”
Counting down the days until Camp Cope release their next record, How to Socialise & Make Friends.
The lead single, The Opener, is an absolute scorcher that makes me absolutely fired up whenever I listen to it. Camp Cope are kicking down doors in the Australian music industry and dismantling sexist systems that have been operating for far too long.
“I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.”
- Virginia Woolf.
New music by some wonderful ladies! First Aid Kit have just released their latest album, Ruins, and on the first listen through I can confirm it is just as lovely as their previous releases. First Aid Kit are pretty much my definition of ‘easy listening’ so it’s the perfect record to throw on in the morning.
“I think music should be scary. Music is an exorcism.”
- Florence Welch.
