A must-see for Meisner actors: Hu-Man 1975

The most META, REAL, MEISNER movie I’ve seen, here’s why: 

First of all, it’s a movie about an actor. A human actor.

The human is Terence Stamp. 

Played by actor Terence Stamp.

Terence Stamp was born on July 22 . A Cancer.

And here’s the story:

An actor is placed in dangerous situations and his fear will be broadcast to the television audience. The audience's emotions will determine whether he is sent into the future or the past.

Simply put:

...so, if the audience don’t live vicariously through you, you could DIE. Now that’s what I call vulnerability. 

So Terence went ahead and did the following:

Getting himself trapped in some tides

Getting intimate with some glacier

Hanging out of some helicopter (way ahead of GoPro)

Doing yoga on some volcano 

Sleeping on some sulfur mine (which btw is notoriously toxic)

And having some very Meisner actor-y moments:

And if that all weren’t meta & actor-y enough for you, the *drumroll* TIME MACHINE that Terence earned with his artistry turns out to be a mirror in a giant bubble aka the ultimate vulnerable narcissist actor dome:

Okaaay, but why “Hu-Man”? 

I found out that Hu is an Egyptian god:

Hu is the power of the spoken word. 

= ACTORS!!!

don’t know if it’s intended or just a coincidence, but one thing I’ll say for sure -

Terence Stamp is an inspiring actor-man. 💖

Fanny Brice did the “Jewish Indian” bit in the Ziegfeld Follies several decades before Mel Brooks did the same in Blazing Saddles, but there’s a precursor that goes back even further.

Clifford and Wayne and their son Master Karlh were a Sioux vaudeville act that toured from 1917 through 1927. The husband and wife vaudeville team were a real novelty with the white woman acting as the straight man and the Native male performing remarkable impressions. A review in the Salt Lake City Tribune praised “George Clifford, a full-blooded Sioux Indian” for his “impersonations of Joe Welch, the famous Hebrew comedian,”

Its lost to time whether Clifford was Lakota or Dakota or Nakota… in those days any endonym was just lumped into a great, big ambiguous swath. If you weren’t described generically as an Indian, the greatest distinction you could hope for was something like Sioux, without any acknowledgement of the distinguishing tribe one came from or the specific language one used.

Clifford and Wayne were originally billed as “The Broadway Girl and the Indian.” Their act was strong, but they were never big stars. Like many vaudeville couples they had a child who they introduced into the act at a young age. They saw their young son as a passage to showbiz success. Children like Buster Keaton and the Marx Brothers had become huge in vaudeville. Clifford and Wayne hoped their child could do the same.

They gave their child the exotic stage name Master Karlh. One review described him as “a five-year-old boy prodigy and half-breed Sioux [who] sings, dances, and turns flip-flops. He has been a positive riot over the entire Hippodrome circuit.”

Always small for his age, Clifford and Wayne advertised their son as a three-year old to make him all that more impressive. Playing the Bijou in Missoula, Montana in October 1917, Master Karlh was top billed as “The 3-Year-Old Baby Indian – A Real Sensation” while Clifford and Wayne were billed as “The Full Dress Indian and the 20th Century Squaw.”

While cleaning out my room I found a paper that my therapist gave me some time ago to deal with obsessive and intrusive thoughts. Sorry the paper is a little crinkled and stained, but I figured I’d post it in hopes that it will help someone like it helped me.

That thought isn’t helpful right now.

Now is not the time to think about it. I can think about it later.

This is irrational. I’m going to let it go.

I won’t argue with an irrational thought.

This is not an emergency. I can slow down and think clearly about what I need.

This feels threatening and urgent, but it really isn’t.

I don’t have to be perfect to be OK.

I don’t have to figure out this question. The best thing to do is just drop it.

It’s OK to make mistakes.

I already know from my past experiences that these fears are irrational.

I have to take risks in order to be free. I’m willing to take this risk.

It’s OK that I just had that thought/image, and it doesn’t mean anything. I don’t have to pay attention to it.

I’m ready to move on now.

I can handle being wrong.

I don’t have to suffer like this. I deserve to feel comfortable.

That’s not my responsibility.

That’s not my problem.

I’ve done the best I can.

It’s good practice to let go of this worry. I want to practice.
