I made this Earl Grey & Chocolate Marble Cake a year ago for a weekend ski trip up to Tahoe with my friends. But I never got around to posting about it on my blog. 🍰 When I finally went to look at the photos I took of it, I wasn’t too happy with them. The propping felt flat, the angles of the shot were dull and they felt a bit lifeless. 🍰 In the past year I feel like my photography has shifted a bit. I’ve spent more time with the styling and more attention to the lighting. I’ve started to try and tell more of story with each photograph. I’ve even started to incorporate my own handmade ceramic pieces into photos! How successful I am with storytelling in my photos, I’m not sure. But I’m trying to do more than just take a pretty picture. 🍰 For the longest time I was just dialing it in with my photos, too intent on cranking out content, as opposed to crafting higher quality work. It was probably a result of burnout. I’ve been blogging for 8 years. It was inevitable. 🍰 But when I look at my photos from a year ago, like this one, and I think “this OK. But it’s not super compelling.” I want more from the photo than just a couple of slices of cake on a plate. 🍰 Is it possible I’m overthinking things? Do people even care about the storytelling of a photo and the light quality? Do they notice the boring plates like I do (these plates were at the AirBnB that we stayed at so I can’t be entirely to blame for the propping). 🍰 What do you think? Am I being overly critical? Should I post the recipe for this cake? Or should I wait to reshoot the cake? I do like the light quality in this photo. But is that enough? I’m curious about your thoughts on photography and blog posts. With the preciousness of Instagram and the need for Pinterest worthy image, do you think there’s a place for more casual photos?
