Yesterdayâs kerfuffle⌠3:30 pm â my wife texted to ask if a restaurant was okay for dinner. 4:47 pm â I replied it was. 5:18 pm â she texted she was on the way. The restaurant was close to the office, so I left for the restaurant, and hung out reading a book. 5:38 pm â she called asking if I was coming. Iâm confused because I was there. Her thing was to just call her. But⌠why? TheâŚ
Today's been a DAY. Lunchtime and realized that I haven't finished my morning coffee.
Wife called me crying wanting me to say she's not a bad mother. Our probably #ADHD child left her water bottle in the car. Personally, I think, it's the lack of real ice cubes in favor of reusable ice. Because she won't be able to chew on ice, there's zero incentive to care about it. But also, for camp, she has backpack and lunch bag. And two hands. Normally, the water bottle is a size that fits in the backpack side pocket. Wife switched today to a 32 oz Stanley water cup style that doesn't fit, so it was in the car cup holder. All the changed needed to forget it.
Bedtime
Of late, my daughter gets emotional at bedtime. Sheâs thinking about her day and getting upset about a particular bad choice. My wife is frustrated about it. I see it as a good thing. Kids develop ethics and morals by feeling guilt. We are careful to emphasize that the action was bad and feeling upset about that is good. We donât want to feel we are bad. We stress thinking about how to achieveâŚ

Sensory hell day 3
My wife invited my daughterâs bestie to spend the day with us. Different kid, more of the same as day 2. First up, it was frustration about the handoff. Despite knowing about this plan, bestieâs dad took her to his office, and the mom went across town to get her home to meet us. Next, the heat at the park with no shade put me in sensory overload. I donât handle heat and bright light (see day 1)âŚ

Iâm reading a book on biofeedback trainings right now and they talk about this. The words âtryâ or âneedâ add pressure to stuff. Sometimes switching from âI need to calm downâ or âIâm trying to slow my breathingâ to âIâm allowing myself to calm down a little more with each exhaleâ or âIâm giving myself permission to slow my breathingâ can be more helpful. Thereâs a difference between âtry to relax the muscleâ and âallow the muscle to softenâ that is significant enough that for some people it can totally change the outcome of a relaxation exercise.
For other tips and tricks, instead of asking âwhyâ you canât change a thought/feeling (why being an offensive question, meaning it forces you to respond defensively - in this case defending the emotion you donât like) you can ask âis there any leeway or wiggle room with this feeling/thought/belief for something else?â Oftentimes we know multiple things at once, and by allowing for a small amount of ambiguity we can start to accept the situation more fully.

Sensory hell day 2
After yesterdayâs sensory hell stuff, my wife had made plans for the loudest, most annoying of my daughterâs friends to spend the day. The kid my wife complained about spending a couple hours with us after school a couple of times in the past few weeks. So, we all knew the day would be loud and potentially overwhelming. It started early as her dad dropped her off before going to work. (BigâŚ
so much autism "advice" boils down to "just spend more time socializing and you'll catch on to the rules :)" as if one of the main points of autism is that you can't "just catch on"

Kids
I have always been a kid magnet. Like they see me as a big teddy bear or maybe fellow kid? The kid they can go to to get away with stuff other adults will deny. In spending time with my daughterâs class the past week for Field Day, a picnic walk, awards, etc., these kids have really glommed on to me. Only a portion will be in my daughterâs class next year. Masking
While at a kid birthday party after tooting about masking, I kind of noticed how I leveraged my party guy mask. A guy found out I work in IT and we talked about AI. I challenged the children to tug of war when they didnât find it that fun and made them excited about the game. All the masking during a 3 hour party made me exhausted. Like falling asleep at 5 pm exhausted. Probably doesnât help IâŚ
