Musing about Tolkien's chapter titles

I love the chapter names in the Hobbit and LotR. Long-ish post where I am enthusiastic about them available under the cut.

An Unexpected Party + A Long-expected Party : the opening chapters of Hobbit and LotR put together suggest the existence of a story beginning with a party that is both unexpected, and long-expected.

I like parties and I like way too much making fun of these chapter names. Maybe it's not even making fun, I think Tolkien would be happy to see my appreciation of his patterns. (Except maybe the part of said appreciation where I name a fic alluding to the pattern and, well, it's not entirely canon-compliant.)

Roast Mutton + A Short Rest + A Short Cut to Mushrooms: OK. We like food and we pretend that the story is short. :D

TBH I should give some fics or chapters food-related titles.

Over Hill and Under Hill - I like this title so much, and later we get Mr Underhill out of it, and using hills and mountains as pseudonym surnames is... a thing? (I am sure there was another case besides Count Monte Christo, but I don't remember)

Riddles in the Dark + A Knife in the Dark + A Journey in the Dark - The first one is probably my favorite chapter name. The whole "x in the dark" naming pattern is great. And fits many other chapters in Tolkien's books, which are (quite understandably) named in other ways.

Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire - this is a very Hobbit title. Whimsical and food-related.

Queer Lodgings - oh, the semantic shift. XD

Flies and Spiders + Fire and Water - I have a weakness for the "[x] and [opposite of X in some way]" names. <3

Barrels Out of Bond + A Warm Welcome + Inside Information + Flight to the Ford- some alliteration <3 Another things for chapter titles that I like (and do)

The Gathering of the Clouds + The Clouds Burst - I like the titles tying to one another

A Thief in the Night - hmmm should this title be put in the "X in the dark" category? But personally, I put it into "I'm sure this isn't the thing you thought will be people's first thought when reading this title, Sir" category.

OK now we get to LotR. I'm skipping some of the chapters, because I have nothing to say, and some I have talked about before.

At the Sign of The Prancing Pony - IIRC in this chapter the horses awake everyone because there is the whole Nazgul commotion, so this would fall under "ambiguous chapter titles"?

The Ring Goes South (title of book 2 of 6) - from what I checked "X goes south" was an idiom already when Tolkien was writing it. So again, ambiguity in the titles my beloved.

The Departure of Boromir - this wins the "most spoiler-free, understated chapter title" award.

Flotsam and Jetsam - this one sounds like it could be in the Hobbit <3

Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit - another food title!

The Window on the West - I need to steal this title for something, it's very universal.

The Forbidden Pool - this sounds like something people on tumblr would say.

The Pyre of Denethor - in contrast to Boromir, his father gets his death spelled out in the chapter title.

The Black Gate is Closed + The Black Gate Opens - another pair of matching titles

shoutout to the words "overmorrow" and "ereyesterday". english losing these words was stupid. "the day after tomorrow" "the day before yesterday" clunky-ass constructions. revolting. i'm bringing overmorrow and ereyesterday back in my idiolect and there is nothing you can do about it

Thorin is the driver that strictly follows the speed limit, knows all the obscure rules of the road, and is generally the most careful driver ever. Bilbo has the most horrible road rage, his driving skills are genuinely terrible, and everyone is genuinely scared he's going to die every time he gets behind the wheel. 15 above the speed limit minimum.

They argue over who drives every time they need to go anywhere. Bribery and dirty tricks are used.

Their friends all shove them in the backseat whenever they're all driving together to avoid this problem. This causes other problems, but generally less arguing.
