a couple of things that are bothering me, because i see that in my recent absence several trashcans have caught on fire in this internet alleyway i call home:
- if you actually think the existence of the hydra trash party in some way influenced marvel tptb’s decision to do this hydra!cap storyline, congratulations, this is westboro baptist church tier logic. this literally makes as much sense as deciding that members of the armed forces are killed in war because god is punishing america for harboring homosexuals– shit, wait, how many of you are even old enough to remember this was a thing? well anyways it was and it makes exactly as little sense as it sounds.
- that said, let me once again come out and STRONGLY NOT ENDORSE thinking of or acting as if the hydra trash party is an actual unified movement with internal organization, stated goals, and strictly enforced rules by which it abides. that way lies only disappointment and betrayal. “hydra trash party” is just a stupid nickname for a few closely-related flavors of dark content, adopted by enough people to catch on and be useful as a tag and description in those heady months following the release of cinematic masterpiece captain america: the winter soldier. at any given moment, half of the regular posters under the tumblr tag are probably annoying the life out of the other half. hell, half the regulars on the hydratrashparty irc channel are probably annoying the life out of the other half; thank god for timezones. the dreamwidth meme is run by one person (not me! as we all know, i don’t have that kind of work ethic) who imposed rules that made sense for the amount of moderation they wanted to do and also conveniently outlawed some things based on personal preference– these are not The Rules for The Hydra Trash Party, they are only the rules for people who want to participate at hydratrashmeme on dreamwidth. @whatisthehydratrashparty is, again, run by one person who has decided to do the stultifying, thankless work of explaining darkfic to 16 year old infants on tumblr. i may personally take issue with how, again, this makes the hydra trash party seem like an organized entity, paving the way for the social justice outrage junkies to pore over content they claim to despise so that they can catch people out who are not “following the rules,” BUT, i do not have the work ethic to take on a project like that so it seems uncouth for me to nitpick how the blog owner is handling it. (with more grace than you could expect from me, that’s for damn sure.)
- corollary to the above point, i’m also not a big fan of redirecting the social justice witchhunters at “those other fans” who “romanticize their trash” because “at least the hydra trash party depicts rape as awful as it really is!” the hydra trash party is not a closed community as long as it remains a sequence of words that literally anybody can use in a post on tumblr, and as such, there are no wagons to circle and no way to tell who the correct people to circle them around would be.
- and once more for the people in the cheap seats: I STRIDENTLY OPPOSE any argument in defense of the htp or darkfic which rests upon that fact that some trauma survivors may use it to cope. darkfic is allowed to exist because THINGS YOU DON’T LIKE ARE ALLOWED TO EXIST, PERIOD. there is no MUST BE THIS RAPED TO RIDE line, and even if there were, there is not a human soul among us alive today who is qualified to judge. not me, not you, not your bestie, not your therapist, bartender, barista, priest, doctor, lawyer, mechanic, barber, dentist, landscaper, manscaper, dogwalker, wedding planner, or even your mom. LAY OFF THIS ARGUMENT. when you say that “only survivors” may use content you find objectionable to “cope,” that creates the horrifying implication people who do not meet your criteria for “survivor” will need to experience sexual assault to deserve to read fanfiction. FAN FICTIONS. literally say that out loud to yourself, and contemplate your life choices. spoiler alert: they’re wrong.
