TADC ep 9 spoilers (long post)
“Jax changed his mind despite Pomni reaching out and abstracted anyway”
…If I’m not wrong, his last words were
“I don’t wanna go.”
Not saying that it wasn’t his fault, either. He did choose not to reach out in the first place. He didn’t want to be saved, and it’s undeniably almost impossible to save someone who absolutely refuses to be saved. However, no, he didn’t really change his mind and abstracted anyway after Pomni reached out. To me, it seemed like the complete opposite— he changed his mind about abstracting and didn’t want to abstract anymore.
However, the tragedy here is that it really was too late. He didn’t want to abstract anymore, but *he already did*. It’s impossible to undo abstraction.
I think this is the main trait they want us to see in the show— Jax’s tendency to realise things too late.
In fact, this trait of his was also shown in the flashback of him and Ribbit. He chose to ignore her for so long and waited for so long until he realised it was already too late to salvage the friendship— because they had already abstracted, and once again, you cannot undo abstraction. Because he was too late.
Oh, and he also could’ve been friends with everyone if he actually tried instead of waiting until he abstracted. He showed the potential of being able to be friends with Ragatha in the past and talk to her normally. Zooble even showed their own negative feelings towards Jax’s abstraction, which shows that they DID have the potential to actually be friends, but Jax failed to do that.
Caine even acts as a foil to this whole trait of his. Even though Caine had done a lot of damage, he didn’t wait until so late— in fact, he even starts listening to the cast members and actually tried fixing his mistakes before it was too late for him to do so— which was the opposite of what Jax has done. He even apologized to everyone and faced them unlike Jax, who didn’t do so.
So no, one of the main problems with Jax (as a character flaw) wasn’t that he abstracted anyway at the last minute because he was too stubborn.
It was that he had always been stubborn the whole time and realised everything too late after the damaged had already been done. This constant action of self sabotage is what led him to his abstraction.
This makes everything a whole lot more tragic, honestly.
(Of course, this is all just my own personal interpretation of everything and I might not be accurate!!)
Couldn't have said it better myself
