Where's it made? Who brought it here? How much were they paid? Who makes it? Is it made in separate parts and put together? How much were they all paid to do this? Where do they get the materials? Who paid for that? Who brings it there? How much were they paid? Who streamlined the base materials? How much were they paid? Who gathered the base materials? Where? How much were they paid? Is it good for them? Is it good for us? Is it good for the land? Is it necessary? Is it biodegradable? How much does it hurt? Do I need it? Do I even want it?
was watching idk watch the video by philosynoir about the racialization of pit bulls and saw this discussion happening in the comments
this is such a perfect example of something I am often trying to articulate to people--the more blunt and violent expressions of people's beliefs in eugenics and race science are often revealed in how they discuss domesticated animals.
you will hear people talk about "pure breeding" or about personality being genetic or openly and uncritically advocating for "mercy killing" as the solution to disability, etc.
these beliefs do not stay contained to conversations on other animals. if you believe this is how life works & buy into these forms of bioessentialist genetic valuation, and you understand humans are also living beings, then you will apply these things to humans too.
one cannot believe in eugenics in one area and have it stay there. it always becomes the "common sense" applied to all sorts of areas of life, from the interpersonal to the international.
ppl who trash on vegans r always soooo funnyyyy bc they genuinely seem to believe they're, like, punching up against this oppressive regime, challenging the mainstream in beautiful defiance, whole time they're just upholding and reinforcing widely accepted social norms
watching a documentary (about the exotic animal trade in the US) right now and just learned that in 2011 in ohio a private zoo owner released at least 52 animals from their cages before killing himself and that all of the animals were killed, in case anyone here still supports animal captivity/ownership.
Here’s a full body illustration of a very well known whale, my favorite orca, Tilikum, who sadly passed away 9 years ago on January 6. He was a very distinct bull, with his large bulky build with those massive pectoral flippers. At some point in time, he was the largest killer whale in captivity at 22ft in length, though of course, at this point that record has been surpassed by Russian transient males.
Thousands of acres of rainforest is being cleared to produce palm oil, used in popular Nestlé and Mondelēz brands
West Papua’s Indigenous people have called for a boycott of KitKat, Smarties and Aero chocolate, Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, and the cosmetics brands Pantene and Herbal Essences, over alleged ecocide in their territory.
All are products that contain palm oil and are made, say the campaigners, by companies that source the ingredient directly from West Papua, which has been under Indonesian control since 1963 and where thousands of acres of rainforest are being cleared for agriculture.
More than 90 West Papuan tribes, political organisations and religious groups have endorsed the call for a boycott, which they say should continue until the people of West Papua are given the right to self-determination.
Raki Ap, a spokesperson for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, which is overseeing the call, said: “These products are linked to human rights violations, in the first place, because West Papuans are being forced, with violence, to get off the land where they’ve lived for thousands of years, which has now resulted in ecocide.
“This is a signal to the countries who are dealing with Indonesia, especially those in the Pacific region, to take notice of who they’re dealing with and how they are basically allowing Indonesia to continue the colonial project in West Papua, the human rights violations, and also ecocide.”
West Papuans say more than 500,000 of their people have been killed by the occupation in the past six decades, while millions of acres of their ancestral lands have been destroyed for corporate profit. Indonesia, already the world’s largest palm oil exporter, is now breaking ground in West Papua on the world’s biggest single palm oil plantation, as well as a sugar cane and biofuel plantation that will be the largest deforestation project ever launched.
“West Papuans’, especially the ULMWP, position is very clear: we are a modern-day colony,” said Ap, speaking from the Netherlands.
“Indonesia hijacked the right to self-determination in 1962 when the Netherlands and Indonesia signed an agreement without any consultation in West Papua … After that, in 1969, there was a so-called referendum, which wasn’t fair, which wasn’t under international law, one man, one vote: just 1,025 men were handpicked at gunpoint to vote for integration to Indonesia.
“So this is the foundation of the Indonesia’s colonial project. When we became part of Indonesia against our will, basically the genocide unfolded.”

Why am I me and not someone else? Does everything have its own "me"? Living beings see from only their own perspective, but we can observe our fellow beings and imagine - what is it like to exist as a cat or an oak tree? They're all out there having their own experience of existence that I could never come close to understanding with human senses. But does that mean those experiences are less important than mine? Maybe from my own perspective, presumably not from theirs.
Anyway, that line of thinking results in drawings like this one - an obvious truth that we can perhaps forget at times when our empathy fails. How many different living things can you identify in this drawing? :)

It's just. It's the dismissiveness that pisses me off the most. We can have a debate about the ethics of these industries if you want. But to sarcastically mock the very concept that animals might be treated poorly in a system that literally sells their body parts for profit, to the point where you dismiss the idea out of hand without doing any research at all, is frankly insane.
more leftists should be vegan. veganism and leftism operate on the same beliefs. social justice, no exploitation of labor, autonomy, environmental concern, intersectionality, an equal and just living etc. leftist praxis should include veganism
I just think many people need more people in their lives who occasionally ask them "what the fuck are you talking about?" and make them flounder for a few minutes
