Welcome/FAQ
Hi there! Welcome to the Ecumenical Rosary Project!
This project was born out of a desire to deepen my own prayer life and connect Christians of different traditions by creating a series of resources that make the Rosary, chaplets, and other tactile prayer tools more accessible to a wider range of believers.
FAQ below the cut!
Who is this project for?
Anyone who wants to deepen their relationship with God! Whether you're Catholic, Orthodox, protestant, or seeking, whether you're theologically liberal or conservative, I'm thrilled that you want to enrich your prayer life. This isn't a place for discourse and argument over theological differences. All are welcome as long as you come in a spirit of love and peace.
Why would a non-Catholic pray the Rosary/use prayer beads?
I can only speak from personal experience, but I find many different benefits in prayer beads and pre-written prayers! As a neurodivergent person, the tactile nature of the beads helps me keep focus. Pre-written, formulaic, and repetitive prayers can also help with memorization! Many also want to connect with the older traditions of the Church.
Could using these prayers/tools be bad for you?
In our fallen world, even good things can cause harm in certain situations. There is nothing inherently wrong with using physical objects, repetition, etc. to help with our prayers, but they may come with their own pitfalls. For example:
Are you superstitious about the objects you use? Do you believe that your prayers are inherently more worthy because they involve prayer beads?
Are you using historical prayers in a transactional way, like a magic spell?
Do certain prayers/tools/icons offend your conscience?
Are you using physical, visible prayer helpers or praying publicly to bring attention to yourself, shame others, or appear more devout?
Does repetition help you meditate on and remember important spiritual truths, or does it distract you?
As Paul writes in his letter to the Corinthians, "'All things are lawful,' but not all things are beneficial," and "whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God." If these things help you grow closer to God and your siblings in Christ, then wonderful! If they cause difficulties, then you're not a worse Christian for not engaging with them.
What do you mean by "Ecumenical Rosary?" Don't those already exist?
I'm certainly not trying to replace anything or imply that anything I present is better than what already exists! My goal is to help provide a wide range of resources that help people find what works best for them, as well as foster friendly interdenominational sharing.
For example, the most common and accessible type of rosary/chaplet is the Dominican Rosary, or beads that come in sets of ten. There are many proposed adaptations to the traditional rosary prayers, like substituting the Jesus Prayer in place of the Hail Marys, but there aren't many audio guides for these variations, which makes implementing them a little trickier.
Similarly, the Anglican and Lutheran rosaries have different amounts and configurations of beads, and they aren't very common compared to the Dominican Rosary. This means they can't follow along with a decade-based chaplet, and they have fewer listen-along guides to help them get started
My hope is to create and collect resources that lower the barrier to entry for folks who are looking to use less usual variations of prayer beads and rosaries!
Okay so what are you actually doing, in practical terms?
There are a lot of different ways to make rosaries and prayer beads more accessible. Right now I'm working on:
Writing and recording Domincan/decade rosaries with adaptations like the Jesus Prayer, or swapping out the Marian Glorious Mysteries for ones that are less distracting to Protestants
Creating and recording variations of the Divine Mercy chaplet that include added scriptural meditations, similar to a scriptural rosary, so that folks who are more comfortable with the chaplet can have variety similar to the different sets of mysteries.
Creating and recording adaptations of decade-based rosaries/chaplets that work with different bead configurations.
Creating and recording adaptations of non decade-based rosaries that work with the traditional Dominican Rosary.
Helping folks find rosaries and bead sets that fit their needs practically and theologically
Creating an index of prayers/chaplets/etc. that make it easy to find the niche variations you're looking for
Will adaptations always follow the blog owner's theological preferences?
Not at all! Granted, I can only create what I know and feel comfortable with, but I don't believe my preferences are the objectively best way. The idea is to create a resource for all kinds of people, not just those like me, so I'm very interested in collaborating with people from various theological backgrounds. I'll probably also reblog resources from many different folks! Just because I'm protestant doesn't mean you'll never see a Hail Mary or the Marian mysteries on the blog.
When you quote scripture, what translation are you usually using?
I'll do my best to make sure translations are always cited where they're heavily used/a focal point of the resource!
For the most part, I'll be using the WEB translation, largely because it is public domain. Other translations may be used in some instances, but I'm cautious around the restrictions that non open-source translations have.
Infrequently, there will be very slight changes to the text to help with flow and clarity.
For example, "When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord," might be changed to "When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord."
These changes are never intended to change the meaning of the text. If you believe I've made a change that goes past simple, non-speculative clarification, please let me know.
What about the promises associated with traditional prayers/chaplets/the Dominican Rosary?
This blog makes no claims about special promises for specific traditional prayers, especially when it comes to variations. I don't have the authority to make promises on behalf of God, and my focus is on the obvious benefits of prayer and meditation on the scripture generally.
How can I contribute?
If you want to contribute directly to specific projects I'm leading/writing (for example, as a reader for audio versions), I'll be posting calls for volunteers once I'm ready for those steps!
That said, you definitely don't have to go through me or this blog. If you have a resource you've made/found and want to share, please tag me! I'd love to help promote outside resources that fit the spirit of this blog!
