I need there to be a neurodivergent kid at the hockey camp and he doesn't interact with the other kids and eats snacks by himself and stares at the ground and it's also really important that he's super good at hockey and the most important part of all of this is that the only coach that connects with him is Shane.

(I use run on sentences when I'm excited)

The kid connects with Shane because he's the only coach not treating him like a child and acting silly. Shane just levels with him and fixes his technique without the fluff. They also just go on and on about historical hockey figures and statistics. Everyone else tunes them out during snack time because Shane and the kid won't shut up about some hockey player from 1963. Then on the last day when the kid's mom picks him up, she cries because her son doesn't wanna leave Coach Hollander and he hugs Shane and it's too much for her because her son has always struggled socially and hockey has always been his outlet.

And it's important to me that Ilya is besotted by all of this and that Shane tears up when Ilya tells him what the mother said.

I know if Rocky was humanoid that Grace and Rocky would have become a popular romantic ship and don't get me wrong I love a non canon ship as much as the next guy, but something I love about Project Hail Mary is the fact that because Rocky is a rocky spider being we get to basically universally experience a profoundly meaningful platonic relationship together without the classic fandom debate of is it platonic or is it romantic.

Can you imagine being stuck in space completely alone with only the corpses of your friends for company, and the first living thing you meet after 46 years of that misery is a fucking weird alien creature who just rolls up with crazy advanced tech and goes "hi let's work together" and makes it possible for you to save your world through the power of friendship and molecular biology. Been thinking about when the subversion of a trope becomes more popular than the original trope to the point that when you see the original trope again it ends up feeling like a subversion itself and a more interesting choice.

The headcanon that Ryland Grace is aroace is so important to me. Because the respresentation of his relationship with Rocky being the most important relationship in his life is SO meaningful.

Like that’s just his buddy. His little guy. A friend, and that’s ENOUGH for him. It’s the most meaningful relationship he has and will have and he’s perfectly content with it

"I can fix him" this and "I can make him worse" that. How about "I can make him more nuanced." I can keep him the same level of evil but bring out his more sympathetic characteristics, which humanize him without excusing his actions, and indeed highlight the depravity of his character by contrast, proving that ultimately he is only a man and thus all the more pathetic than had he truly been an inhuman monster.

WRONG. unironically the best way for Ilya to sneak Shane into being exclusive would be like "hey going no condoms would be hot, yes. 😄 but not safe. 🙁 but wHAT IF we both got tested and then didn't sleep with other people when we're apart??? good idea because then we can fuck raw?! safely!"

and then he waits and brings up the "actually I'm not sleeping with other people because i'm not interested in doing that" later, once Shane has acclimatized like a frog.
