THE YARNZ PROJECT

THE YARNZ PROJECT is a collection of scarves featuring works by celebrated contemporary artists, with proceeds to benefit the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA).  The project marks the first collaboration with a fashion brand by each of the artists. Halley comments; "As a strong supporter of the need for reasonable drug laws, I agreed to collaborate on creating this scarf with YARNZ to benefit the Drug Policy Alliance. I've been told I'm a perfectionist, but I was delighted with YARNZ' success in interpreting my painting in cashmere. It's beyond anything I could have expected."  

Avid supporters of DPA, Helena Christensen and Wayne Maser joined forces to shoot the collection with stylist Sciascia Gambaccini. 

THE YARNZ PROJECT on Ed01 features Peter Halley's Waiting for Forever (2011), Erik Parkers' Colombier Beach (2012) and James Nares' It's Never Nothing (2001) cashmere scarves, $340.

SNEAK PEAK AT OUR FLEABABY

From Edition01 personal experience, we're getting frustrated with what the market has to offer when it comes to style meets function diaper bags. The options are either too obvious for baby duties, with childlike florals and paisleys, or too highly priced by designer fashion brands. What a dilemma!

Earlier this year Edition01 met Fleabags, one of our favorite accessory designers, to see what we could do.

The great thing about Fleabags is that they are dedicated to creating products that are as green as possible while maintaining high quality and covetable design. They are also made with organic and vintage materials, vegetable-tanned and re-purposed leathers, and other parts all sourced in the USA. All silkscreens use water-based ink and the bags themselves are all made in the USA with good old-fashioned sewing. 

So we all sat down with our research, findings and ideas and started testing different prototypes, materials and designs. We had focus groups with young Moms and bloggers to get their opinion, listened to their advise, experience and needs for a diaper bag and put that insight to work. 

As so the Fleababy was born! The whole experience has been so much fun and we can't wait to get this into production for all the Moms out there. 

The design features multiple internal elasticated mesh and closed pockets, water resistant lining, large exterior pockets for easy access to bottles and swaddling cloths, as well as detachable leather stroller straps and body strap. The hinged frame, inspired by traditional doctor's bags, ensures that  the Fleababy will remain open or closed, and the large opening allows for you to see all the contents quickly and easily.

The Fleababy will be available in up to 4 color ways, combining Fleabag's signature canvas and a durable nylon, in Blue (pictured), Red, Black and Camouflage.

OH BABY BAGS!

For the past year at Edition01 we've been obsessing over diaper bags. Why aren't there any stylish, unisex, functional and desirable bags out there at a decent price and that aren't littered with childish illustrations of flowers, animals or patterns?

All in the name of research, we've been keeping our eyes peeled for fashionable and high profile new Moms stepping out with their bundles of joy and their choice of diaper bag. Kate, Kim, Penelope, Fergie, Lara, Kristen and many more, it's interesting to find out who chose what. A favorite here at the Edition01 office was Kim Kardashian with her oversized Hermes, ironically not far off from the origins of the "Kelly" bag itself!

The original Hermes "Kelly" prototype was first designed in the 1920s for Emile-Maurice Hermes's wife, Julie. It was intended to be a simple and plain bag to allow horse riders to carry their saddles--not swaddling cloths, but still the heavy work bodes well.

It wasn't until Alfred Hitchcock allowed famed costume designer Edith Head to purchase Hermes accessories for his new film, To Catch A Thief, that the bag met its namesake. The director's muse and film's star, Grace Kelly, fell in love with the bag on set and within months of her marriage to Prince Rainer III of Monaco in 1956, the pregnant Princess Grace was seen regularly using her "Kelly" bag to shield her growing bump from the persistent paparazzi.

EDITION01 0N... THE BRETON STRIPE

Paris Fashion Week is under way, and to celebrate Edition01 is paying homage to the classic style staple that is the Breton Stripe. 

The nautical design was first established as a uniform for Brittany navy sailors in 1858, with 21 stripes symbolizing each of Napoleon's victories. 

The shirts became popular with local Breton mariner workers and were quickly adopted across Northern France. 

However it wasn't until a young Coco Chanel visited the French coast in 1917, and geniusly translated this uniform into a style revolution that moved away from the heavily corseted fashions of the time.

Since then, the Breton Stripe has become synonymous with many moments in culture and style. From the famed costume designer Edith Head dressing Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief (1955) to Andy Warhol and his muse Edie Sedgwick in The Kitchen (1965). From the Beatnik new wave left bank in the 50s and 60s to Jean-Paul Gaultier's Le Male and ongoing homage (all his backstage crew at his runway shows must wear stripes).

KICKSTARTERS

Every sneaker has its own personality and speaks volumes about its wearer. Here's a rundown of Edition01's favorite kicks, and how they found their way.

THE EVERYMAN - CHUCK TAYLOR CONVERSE First produced in 1917, the "All Stars" was an attempt by Converse's means of capturing the basketball shoe market. Chuck Taylor, an amateur basketball player and shoe salesman for Converse, modified the design and became its spokesman.

THE LEGEND - AIR JORDANS Arguably one of the first collaborations of its kind, Air Jordans were a meeting of minds between Nike and the best basketball player of all time Michael Jordan, first released in 1985. The iconic "Jumpman" logo and the red and black colors are inspired by "his airness" himself and his then team the Chicago Bulls.

THE SKATER - VANS Beginning as a small store in Anaheim, California in 1966, the Vans deck shoe, now known as the "Authentic" was quickly noticed by skaters because of their sticky sole. In 1975, skate legends Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, designed their own style of "Era" Vans, which became the essential shoe and grip for skating generations.

THE ARTIST - ALEJANDRO INGELMO x KENNY SCHARF What happens when you bring together one of most respected and recognizable contemporary artists with a visionary CFDA shoe designer? Created to celebrate Kenny Scharf's solo show at the Paul Kasmin Gallery earlier this year, these limited edition sneakers are a walking work of art. Stella McCartney x Goop

Today marks the first collaboration with long-life friends Stella McCartney and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow. The capsule collection is a reflection not only of their shared effortless aesthetic but also their lifestyle. The duo celebrated the collection at an English Garden Party in the Hamptons with lawn games and English fare.

The pieces include a tailored black wool trouser, blue jean, a must-have charcoal wool jumpsuit, and stunningly simple shoulder bag and clutch. Edition01's favorite? Obviously, the effortlessly chic black wool blazer with white lapel underlining.

EDITION01 ON... STREET STYLE

Its New York Fashion Week, and the attention is not just on the runways or backstage. We're insatiable with our immediate news cycle and aren't satisfied with season inappropriate fashion that won't be seen until it passes through print editorials, ad campaigns and delivered to stores. Instead, we are clamoring for the audience, the arrivals and what is happening on the street outside of the show's entrance.

Street Style - Punks, Mods, Zooties, Hipsters, Rude Boys, Goths, B-Boys, Harajuku, and many more - has long been part of the promenade, our distinct visual uniform and communication to others of our affiliation, our peer group and taste, a nod to our crew, our tribe. It is grassroots pop-culture at its best, where the new and next is tested, pushed and adopted.

Over the next few weeks as the fashion crowd migrates from New York, London, Milan and Paris, neo-Street Style is in full pelt. The art of street style is all about delving into style's almanacs--the connections that are always being made between magazines, movies, art, music, design, runways, red carpets and so on--responding to what you are drawn to from style's past and present, and combining all these influences into one without it looking like a costume. Making it relevant and your own.

GIOVANNA BATTAGLIA L'Uomo Vogue editor and W Magazine contributor, Battaglia started as the in-house fit model for Dolce & Gabbana. She's also Vlad Roitfeld's girlfriend, influential gallerist and son of Mademoiselle C, and one of street style's brightest stars.

JULIA SARR-JAMOS The striking half French half Senegalese editor of Wonderland, is known for her favoring flats, bright colors and a wonderful head of hair.

NATALIE JOOS Belgian-born New York-based Joos is one of the best casting director in the business, and founder of Tales of Endearment.

As a collaboration agency, Edition01's process of sourcing partners and discovering new designers is integral to all our projects. This Spring, the whole Edition01 fell in love with KAANAS espadrilles. Handmade in Columbia from 100% brushed cotton, the KAANAS espadrille fabrics come in stunning stripes and patterns that we just couldn't get enough of.
