How to Handle Hell Week
If you work in theater, vocal performance, or pit orchestras, you will be familiar with the concept of “hell week.” This is the week leading up to opening night. It is long, gross, involves too many rehearsals, and is the time you are most likely to find someone crying in a closet. Here’s how to avoid being that person and maintain your sanity in the face of overwhelming stress.
Get as much done beforehand as possible. Do you have assignments due during hell week? If so, this is not the time for “due tomorrow, do tomorrow.” Get it done early, because trying to do anything of any importance is going to be hard when you’re rehearsing every night. Study for tests in advance. Ask for time off work if at all possible - try to frontload shifts to the week prior if you need the cash. Anything you can do to lighten non-performance loads is going to make you such a happier camper when you’re actually there.
Know when your food will happen in advance. I am NEVER grumpier than when I am hungry and I don’t know when I’m next going to eat. I solve this by bringing a full lunch box on my busy days. You don’t have to bring food (though I recommend it!), but you do need to have a reliable source for your meals. Hangry is a thing. Don’t let yourself be the hangry person surrounded by other stressed folks - that’s just going to spiral into negativity. Be prepared!
Drink lots of water. Hydration makes you feel better and helps your body run well. Caffeine gives you headaches and the shakes. Hydrate without caffeine regularly! Your body will thank you!
Practice patience and detachment. People around you will be getting stressed and snappish. Don’t let a director’s terseness or a castmate’s pointed comment get to you. People phrase stuff poorly or say stuff they don’t mean when they’re stressed and tired. Try to be as Zen about it as possible, and let negativity roll off of you. It’ll keep you a little saner in the long run.
Be kind. Watch yourself, basically. Don’t let yourself take out your stress on others, even if it feels like in the moment they deserve it. Hell week is hard for everyone, don’t make it worse for someone else. If you wouldn’t want someone to say it to you, don’t say it to someone else.
Schedule in 9 hours of sleep. Obviously, you probably won’t get out of all your other responsibilities during hell week. With class or shifts that start early, and rehearsals that run late, you might not be able to get a solid eight hours in a row at night. If that’s the case, schedule in NAPS. Naps are your secret weapon. Also, try to schedule in nine hours of sleep over the course of the day, because if you’re anything like me, you’ll let other things creep in to the beginning and end of your scheduled sleeping time. By over-scheduling sleep, you’ll still get enough even when other things cannibalize it.
Hell week is tough on everyone - take care of yourself. You got this!

Study set up for today! Studied for an exam I have tomorrow. I am enjoying having my notes on Pages, far quicker, convenient, and efficient. I can go back to add or change things, I have all of my module assignments and study material in the same document.
My iPad and Notetaking Method
I’ve been letting my ask box fill up with questions regarding my ipad and electronic note taking because I’ve been working on this masterpost regarding my routines and hopefully it will answer all of the asks at once!
What iPad do you have?
iPad PRO (9.7inch 2016 release) in black, 32GB with original Apple Pencil
What app do you use to take your notes?
GoodNotes for iPad
Where did you get your iPad case with that cool pencil holder thing?
From Amazon for $9, comes in a lot of various colors and designs (limited stock of certain designs)
PROS OF IPAD NOTETAKING
Never run out of paper. Use as much space as you want and never waste a single tree.
Never run out of ink
A MILLION color choices
Upload notes to the Cloud (Google Drive) so you take your notes everywhere
Carry just one iPad rather than like 7 notebooks (save your posture)
Splitscreen view allows you to open a PDF on one half of the screen and take notes in app on the other half
With Apple Pencil, you can rest your palm on the screen and it won’t be janky
Feels like writing on real paper!!!
Look cool and get complements for being so high tech
Apple Pencil charges in your iPad (30 seconds of charging + 15 minutes of use)
DIGITAL BULLET JOURNALLING
Your iPad is your computer. amazing
You can quickly share notes thru emails and stuff
You can fill out forms or worksheets on your iPad
Same time by copy-pasting in notes rather than having to write/draw stuff out multiple times
CONS OF IPAD NOTETAKING
iPad is freakin expensive
The Apple Pencil is like $100???
The GoodNotes app is $5 but i mean if you could afford the iPad then might as well get the app
If you lose your iPad youll cry
If you don’t get the case with the Apple Pencil holder and you lose your Apple Pencil, you lost your apple pencil. good luck
If you forget to upload notes to the Cloud you’re dead
Sometimes you forget to charge your iPad and youre dead
Sometimes your Apple Pencil runs out of battery in the middle of intense note taking and it sucks
Some people really like flipping thru a notebook rather than feeling limited to swiping and tapping around on the iPad
iPad is fragile
Apple Pencil sometimes needs *sharpening* aka you accidentally dropped it on the tip and the tip smooshes so you gotta buy a new tip but the damn tip is like $20 for 4
Some people just enjoy scratching a pen to paper (ipad will never be that way)
SO there you have it that’s all I really have to say about my iPad.
Would you recommend it?
Heck yeah!!!! Once you get used to it it’s a gift from study-gods
Hope that was comprehensive! Personally I would recommend the smaller version of iPad Pro (bigger version is a little weird to pull out in lecture cuz it’s just massive) and remember: apple pencil only works with iPad PRO, not air, mini, nada. ONLY PRO.

– one thing i wanted to tell you guys— i wanted to make a new introduction post, like a masterpost, but with things about me, if that makes sense? i get lots of questions in my ask box, and most of them are the same– so what i want to know is: what do you want to know about me? or, what do u think other people would want to know about me? leave me your questions in my ask box! — thank you so much you guys i really don’t appreciate you enough xx i’ve decided, that the next 3 asks i get in with post requests– i’ll do them within the next two weeks! so hurry before lots of people (hopefully) ask!
sorry for the bombardment of information and requests, i just want to make this blog better for you guys!
i hope you have a great, productive day!
love you, -jasmine ;)
100 Days of Productivity - Day 4/100 February 3, 2018
It’s the weekend! I started and finished a task for English Extension, where I had to give a personal response to the novel Jane Eyre. I loved completing this task! I find that when you genuinely enjoy a subject, you are more willing to work hard at it and will therefore perform at your best. I find that a lot of students forget this when selecting subjects and majors. So, if you needed a reminder and are scrolling past this post, here it is: do what you enjoy and pursue your passions, because in the end, it will pay off.

apparently, i am now the only girl in my counterpoint class, and i feel empowered and slightly terrified at the same time.
featuring some essentials, a glimpse of my window, the stairs in the music library, and this weekend’s music analysis homework. bonus points if you can guess what piece it is!

the sun was shining today and I feel so happy :’) I started studying early in the morning, had a team meeting at work which was very nice, rode my bike home and enjoyed breathing some fresh air. I also made vegan hot choclate to have enough energy for my afternoon studying session :’) my next exam is in 9 days and I really hope it won’t be too difficult.. this semester has gone by so fast :D
2.3.18 || lol so I’ve decided to commit to five (5) different things on my cello- aside from my regular orchestra stuff- which is the most I’ve ever done at once and ik that at some point I’m gonna regret it
