"I hate everything."
"I can relate... Sometimes, everything's pretty awful. But you can't let life win. What's eating you?"
The mechanic sighed as Edward overacted, making her shake her head. “Edward.. j-just stop.” She spoke softly, before continuing, “Roy has done nothing but respect me. Hell, he treats me better than half of my male customers. He compliments me but he is only being a gentlemen, not some old perv,” Pale blue eyes met his, why was his face so flushed? “I appreciate you looking out for me, but I’m a big girl now. I can take care of myself.”
Another sigh left her lips as he denied any feelings for her, rubbing the back of her head. “That’s what I thought. So, don’t worry about who is attracted to me or not… you shouldn’t care about that.”
Ed was skeptical to the information she told him. He always was going to think Roy was being nothing but a dog towards her. It was difficult for Ed to see the colonel in a positive light when he was so biased. "Your customers are being creepy to you?!" Ed asked, taken aback by this news. "I'll teach them all a lesson! I'm coming with you to work next time!" he insisted protectively.
Ed could not help but pout when Winry suggested for him not to worry. "I can't help it," he admitted stubbornly. "Why's it bad for me to worry about you? You should be happy I care!"
The elder self couldn’t only smile a bit. “You know, I do hope things go differently for you Ed… I really do…” He went over and put his hand on the other’s shoulder. “For everything that I can do… Everything that I have… if you can work a different path for yourself… Well let’s just say I do kinda hope for it. Just one day I hope you figure out too why I took mine…”
Ed really had to wonder what the major meant. What was the real reason why he had those guns? Was something wrong with his alchemy? The teen resisted asking those burning questions. As much as he wanted to know, he also did not want to know. It really did not have to do with ignorance being bliss; it had to do with not wanting to open a whole can of worms.
"Okay," Ed concurred in a more simple and serious way. He offered a weak smirk. "I'm sure I will. I bet I'll have a lot of time when to think when I reach old age, too," he teased in good fun.
What exactly just happened..?
Winry blinked as she looked over to see Edward sulking, what could possibly be wrong with him? “Ed..?” She spoke softly, taking a step towards him.
She had a slight feeling of what could be troubling him.
"Ed.. I know.. you got upset the other day a-about me and Roy.." She shook her head, letting out a soft sigh. "There is no ‘me and roy’.. He’s very dear to me.. but not.. not in that way. He’s a friend.” She tilted her head, a small frown upon her lips.
"Why are you jealous, Edward? It’s like you have feelings for me..”
Ed jumped when Winry suddenly appeared on the scene. He had not been expecting her. "W-W-Winry!" he sputtered. For some reason beyond him, his heart started pounding in his chest.
"I... Why would I care anyway?!" he asked in a hurried and defensive way. "I just don't want that creep to be taking advantage of you! He's an old man, and I wouldn't doubt that he's a degenerate pervert!" Ed ranted in a panicked fashion. "Keep your guard up!" he implored.
Ed shook his head quickly. "N-No! No, no, no! Of course not! W-We're like family!" he insisted.
"And who says I DON’T still have it?" he shot back. "I’ve been able to go to Drachma, Aerugo, Creta, even Xing! This job doesn’t ALWAYS keep me behind the desk ya know. I spend every day with my nose deep in the alchemy secrets this country has been keeping for years far longer than ours Ed… and you’d be surprised how much of it has to do with the alchemy of the countries around us… There’s no way I’d be able to do this any other way…"
It was clear that his older self was getting incredibly aggravated with his younger self at this point. The Major knew full well why the younger was questioning him. Hell he’d questioned the decision hundreds of times in the two years he’d been back but every time he knew it had been the right one…
"But then again, I don’t expect you to understand… not yet anyway…" he sighed. "And I wish I could explain it to you, I really do Ed, but it would… change things… not that I haven’t probably already told you too much as it is…"
"Well, here's to you not being tethered in a backyard like the sorry dog you are," Ed remarked in a cheeky way. He could not help but feel a little jealous. He had not traveled to all of the countries that the major mentioned. He was still behind his older self. It made sense, but Ed wanted to see more of the world. He had an insatiable thirst for exploring new lands and learning about alchemy all over the world. "I guess it doesn't sound as boring as I was originally led to believe," he relented.
"I won't ever fully understand. Not now, anyway," Ed concurred. He waved his hand dismissively. "Save your breath. I'd rather not become like you. You may have already done me some favors."
"Look, you have no idea the stuff they’ve given me access to alright? It’s stuff we always dreamed of getting our hands on… That’s a big reason why I hang around, I like the challenge of decoding it all. And I usually ride a desk if it helps, not that I like it, but it also means I’m less likely to have to kill okay? Not that I could avoid them training me how to…" If Ed looked close enough, he would see a set of gun holsters at the other’s back much like the one’s Hawkeye had. Hell, it had been her who’d showed him how to properly use them. "You’ll learn soon enough Edward that life isn’t always black and white…" he spat slightly at the incredulous attitude his younger self was giving him. "You can preserve your beliefs even in the face of impossible odds, you just have to know how… I’ve never killed anyone and I don’t intend to start… for any reason. That doesn’t mean I haven’t learned more ways to knock someone down if need be… You WILL learn that the hard way one day…"
The Major was starting to get agitated with his younger self. Had he REALLY been this bad? No wonder he’d always had trouble getting people to take him seriously…
"All the privileges in the world isn't worth wearing a leash for the rest of your life," Ed stated in a stubborn way. He could not keep from pouting the more he listened to Ed. "A desk job? Me in a desk job? Never!" The young man always had ants in his pants. He could never stay in one place for long. He was hungry to explore new places and research as many things as he could. "What's happened to your sense of adventure? Do you have any idea how old you sound right now?"
The sight of the guns in the holsters did catch his eyes. Edward really did appear to be a major now. State alchemists may have been equivalent to majors, but they usually did not carry guns. His frown deepened and he furrowed his brow. Something was definitely wrong with his older self. "I don't like the way you're talking..." he said in a more sober way."I just hope you never have to cross that line for your sake."
"I am not fighting you. Your enemy is yourself and in order to defeat it you must recognize that but you’re so blind to it, you won’t even open your eyes to see that."
"Whatever, Mustang! It's just going in one ear and out the other. I don't need to take a useless man like you seriously."
Hughes released his firm grip on his shoulders. “Fine, I’ll leave you alone and I won’t lecture you anymore.”
"Sounds good to me!" Edward turned his back on Hughes and stormed away from him.
"You won’t get away with threatening your superiors, Fullmetal. In fact it could result in some serious consequences. Do you really want to carry this out over such a trivial issues? Pick your battles wisely, Fullmetal or the enemy may slip under your nose, in this case your emotions."
"Bring it on! I'm not scared of you! Like hell you'd punish me! As far as I'm concerned, you're my number one enemy, Mustang!"
"You need to calm down, Ed or else you’ll hurt yourself or someone else. Do you really want that?"
"I don't need a lecture, Hughes! You're not helping! Leave me alone!"
The Major couldn’t help but to laugh as he went over and roughed up his younger self’s hair. He knew better than to argue with him. “Like I said Ed, you’ll learn eventually. And so you know, I come and go pretty much as I please still. The higher ups know I’m perfectly willing to walk away anytime I feel like it… for now though, like I said, it’s something I can do and it is helping people.”
"Mmph!" Ed groaned. He swatted at the major's hand. He usually did not like getting his hair ruffled. It made him feel childish. "Yeah, yeah," the teen remarked, not believing his elder for a minute. "It just sounds like being a dog with a longer leash to me," he stated harshly. "You should find something better to do. I'm sure you can help people in other ways. You won't be helping people when they make you kill for them."
"Isn’t it you who is antagonizing me?”
"Oh, Mustang, don’t steal my mechanic from me. I’m too chicken to ask her out and I can’t stand the thought of you taking her away from me, oh Colonel please.”
"Face it, Fullmetal, you’re jealous and over nothing."
"SHUDDUP! I do NOT sound like that! Just stay away from her! Then we wouldn't be having these kinds of problems! If you don't, I'll find another way to get back at you, and it'll be much worse than having that older version of me kiss you!"
He gave him a firm look. “Ed, I am anything but biased. I can understand if their relationship is making you uncomfortable but you have to realize Roy isn’t interested in your mechanic the way you think he is, it’s something to keep in mind.”
"Well, if he's not, he has a really funny way of showing it with all of his stupid innuendo!" Ed replied. He was still very angry. "And Winry might see it differently than him, which means she'll get her heart broken!"
Ed sighed, if only he could tell his younger self what was coming, then he’d get it. But… he knew he couldn’t, everything had to happen the way it did and the elder Ed knew it. Though, that nagging temptation to tell his younger self… maybe he’d be able to figure it out without them having to give up alchemy… No… then the lesson would be pointless. Plus, it wasn’t like he’d given up his alchemy for nothing, he’d done it for Alphonse and there was no better reason.
"To you it probably does sound lame. Hell if someone was standin’ here tellin’ ME this stuff five years ago I’d think the same thing… but ya gotta trust me okay? For once in your life stop being a stubborn pain in the ass… it’s amazing what you’ll figure out…"
Ed frowned. He was always reluctant to trust adults. Even if his older self was the one saying the words, he had to be incredulous. "You shouldn't have to keep being a dog of the military. I'm getting the hell out of it once I find a way to get Al and I's bodies back," Ed informed bluntly. The last remark made him frown more. "I am not being 'a stubborn pain in the ass'! I'm being pragmatic!"
"No, you made it your business. You stuck your nose into where it doesn’t belong.”
:
"Excuse me! But YOU'RE always the one who's antagonizing ME!"
Hughes grasped his shoulders firmly. “Are you sure, are you really sure, Edward? Because quite frankly, I think you’re reading into this too much. I understand it looks wrong, I’m actually just as concerned as you are but we have to trust Roy’s judgement even if it seems a bit odd. I know he does dumb things, I’ve seen him, hell I’ve even discussed this with him but he knows what he’s doing. So why don’t you?”
"No! No, he doesn't know what he's doing! He has no idea!" Ed snapped, glaring at Hughes. "You're just biased because your friends with him! Don't be blind to the truth, Hughes!"
"For God’s sake, Edward, you need to let this go! It’s none of your business anyways!"
"You were the one who made it my business, Mustang."
