people talk all the time about “primal instincts” and it’s usually about violence or sexual temptations or something, but your humanity comes with a lot of different stuff that we do without really thinking about, that we do without being told to or prompted to

your average human comes pre-installed with instincts to:

Tell story

Make Thing

Investigate

Share knowledge

Laugh

Sing

Dance

Empathize with

Create

we are chalk full of survival instincts that revolve around connecting to others (dog-shaped others, robot-shaped, sometimes even plant-shaped) and making things with our hands

your primal instincts are not bathed in blood- they are layered in people telling stories to each other around a fire over and over and putting devices together through trial and error over and over and reaching for someone and something every moment of the way

sometimes I hate how much modern clothing is determined to show women’s bodies

like if it’s not skimpy, it’s skin-tight- leggings, skinny jeans, bodycon dresses, etc.

doing historical costuming has made me hyper-aware of just how “on display” my body is when I’m wearing normal modern outfits, and it affects my behavior. don’t bend over to pick things up at work because men will stare at your ass. sit differently so you don’t show stomach rolls. a guy running a pop-up stand next to my shop commented so much on how I had “great legs” that I didn’t wear leggings and skirts- one of my favorite winter outfit combinations -for the rest of the season

there’s a certain freedom in medium-to-long skirts and skirt supports, I find: the freedom to define what people see of my body. men won’t stop being creepy no matter what women wear, but I like that kind of dramatic body re-framing. you don’t get to see my legs and hips, Creepy Guys. you get to see a massive bell skirt, or a bustle, or an upended trumpet flower shape. my body is to be seen only by those I’ve chosen to trust, not the world at large

of course, empowerment is different for different women. some feel comfortable and powerful showing as much of their shape as possible, and I applaud them in doing exactly that. what pisses me off is the pressure from the fashion industry for all of us to be empowered by the same thing…a thing that just so happens to tie in with the diet industry and the cosmetics industry. it’s easier to sell the idea that you have to be hairless and smooth and thin and blemish-free when it’s all on display

sometimes I just wish I could go about in a hoop skirt and a t-shirt that says “fuck off” in delicate script

Technically unless there’s a dress code for your work or whatever there’s nothing that says you can’t wear a hoop skirt everywhere.

I see this post a lot and I’m sure I’ve seen someone I follow add on this as well but if you agree with the sentiment of this post I really hope you also support hijabis and niqabis, because that is more or less the core of how we dress. Observing hijab is religious, yes, but dressing modestly is like as OP said “my body is to be seen only by those I’ve chosen to trust, not the world at large”. that is the exact sentiment behind why I wear niqab (the religious reasons for wearing it I don’t feel comfortable talking about a lot, because how i express my faith is personal and between me and Allah(SWT)), because I get to choose who sees my body and how much of it they see and because I like having that control and I think it’s fun and I enjoy it!

If you now support people choosing to dress modestly for whatever reason, you must include supporting hijabis and niqabis who have been dressing modestly forever.

What happened yesterday in Warsaw? (7.08.20)

Yesterday, an attempt was made to arrest for 2 months an activist Margot (a non-binary person - from Stop Bzdurom) for damage to a van that preaches homophobic slogans (such as "homosexuals are pedophiles") and for damage to the health of the person from the foundation that finances these vans - (these vans often drive around Poland in police custody). When they came to get her, she was in the headquarters of KPH (Kampania Przeciw Homofobii - Campaign Against Homophobia). On the Internet, I read how they called to appear there and disturb the police. The police could not get to Margot thanks to people who came and other activists.

Eventually Margot went out to voluntarily surrender herself to the police, but was not arrested. The police left her...

Margot and the rest of them went to the Krakowskie Przedmieście district, where a rainbow flag was hung on the Nicolaus Copernicus monument again. Then Margot was raided in an unmarked police car. Even more people gathered in the square and sat around the car so that it could not leave. Police was agressive.

There were no warnings before the police started using force. It was brutal. The left-wing MPs were on the spot and tried how they could defend those who were treated worst.

The MP testifies that she heard the cops talking to each other to arrest 3 people at random.

Is there anything you need to be careful about when adding baby oil, I've never heard of that technique before. Also what are your thoughts on using a tortillon, because I've always been told not to use one for colored pencils.

Baby Oil bottles LEAK and will melt:

The entire lead out of a color pencil if they are in the same container

kneadable erasers into a dusgusting gray crud

will fuck up erasers in general

jam up technical pens like you would not believe

Try to be patient when working with it. if you need to layer something on top of a blended area or erase near it, give it extra time to make sure it’s REALLY dry before going in.

Just keep it in it’s own sealed container or on the shelf, otherwise nah it’s safe and very predictable

As for Tortillions (those dense rolled-up paper sticks) you can TOTALLY blend with them, the effect is Very Nice, but the drawback is that the Tortillion is now stained That Color forever. Sharpening them does not work, i have tried. So you get like one use out of a Tort but if you’re OK with that it’s a perfectly good tool. if you want the same effect but with less money, Q-tips will do roughly the same thing, but not as precisely.

Other tools I’ve used on a color pencil drawing:

Pottery Tools to indent/emboss the paper to make fine patterns before drawing over them to leave lil white lines

Blue tac, the thing you use to hang posters? GREAT eraser, better than the gray ones.

Waxed paper to lift pencil. Lay it over the area you want and rub the top of the paper with a soft-lead pencil or the pottery tool, the color pencil will stick to the wax paper and take up the top layer of color/give you a crisp lit for tidying up edges

White Gel Pens to correct errant dots/fix edges/add white spots

Fuck it, if it gives you the desired effect, use it.

Grew some ugly but apparently delicious tomatoes this year. Gonna draw some ugly but apparently delicious tomatoes.

Would seeing me compose on the page make my professors strangle me? Probably. Am I going to stop? No. At least I'm sketching in yellow, which will vanish as the Color goes in into underpainting.

Underglaze yellow to make tomatoes vibrant, underglaze green to remember where stems are, block in shadows

Block out highlights and begin laying in local color. Take a hand and stretch break, pay dog.

Apply baby oil to smooth texture and adhere pencil to paper. Highlights and fiddly bits will come out much better if you break to fix things halfway through.

Since the orange tomatoes have a smoother texture, they're put down in lots of little circles for less striation.

The baby oil needs a few hours to cure, the assistant needs to be let out, and I need a nap so I'll be back to do the leaves and textures in a few hours.

Some Questions from the Notes:

1. I use Faber-Castell, Derwent, Prismacolor and a couple misc brands I’ve picked up here and there. F-C has the hardest leads, which work well for detail work. Derwent is very smooth and buttery but doesn’t have very intense pigments. Prismacolor has th best pigmentation but GARBAGE binder that will crack as soon as you look at it so I have like. 8. for the pigments I can’t get in other brands.

2. Baby Oil: Color Pencil Lead consists of: 1. Pigment (the color) and 2. Binder (the wax/oil medium the pigment is suspended in so you can draw with it without making a mess). Baby Oil chemically “melts” the binder into a liquid so you can ‘paint’ with the color pencil. You can also do this with Isopropyl Alcohol, mineral oil, turpentine, and several other things, but those are varying levels of stinky/unsafe. Baby oil is safe to use on babies, but 1. tends to give a warm/yellow cast to your work after it dries and 2. takes much longer to dry (20mins to ‘workable’ and 3 hours to “bone dry” in CO’s dehydration zone). the warm cast works well for the Tomatoes, but if I didn’t want that, my next choice is Isopropyl Acohol, which doesn’t leave a cast, and dries to “Workable” in like. 30 seconds.

now, using a blending liquid Smooths and Blends your colors, but it also “fixes” them to the paper, so you cannot erase no matter what once you do this, so you have to learn to commit.

Other people discussed blending by going over with a white pencil and that does work, but it leaves a waxy look after it, which can be desireable depending on what you’re drawing- I’ll be using that technique for the Highlights on the Tomatoes Later.

3. I’m drawing on Strathmore’s Mixed Media paper, which helps the paper not be oily (but once it’s dry the paper isn’t oily at all). Bristol Board, Hot-press watercolor paper and other Heavy papers work well for this too.

4. Composing: If this was a For-Real Illustration for a compettition or publication, what you’re supposed to do is make a couple thumbnail comps on sketch paper, pick one, then draw a larger compositional sketch on sketch paper to work out your exact placement/shadows/little details, then use a lightboard to trace those onto your good “Final Paper”. this does save you the headache of realizing you’ve made a jaor fuckup halfway though a piece, but it’s also more effort than I care for.

I’m also supposed to have a sheet of velum under my hand so I don’t smear pigment all over the white parts of my paper either but the point of these tomatoes is to get back on the Art Horse after a Major depressive Episode, so I’m not bothering with that either.

5. The tomates are “Apparently” delicious becuase I can’t eat most things with tomato in them (tomates that have boon cooked for a long time with an acid are ok- ketchup, bbq sauce) or I break out in hives. In my mouth. according to the people that eat the raw ones or the spaghetti sauce I made, they are Tasty AF, apparently.

Fixed up the shadows a bit with a lighter brown and started working on the stems and leaves. I outline in a color that the shadows will blend into to remember what I was doing last night.
