I’d like us all to pause for a minute to ponder the many virtues of Beau/Jester/Fjord

Poly V with Jester in the middle and Beau and Fjord as her two partners who are very good friends and would love to never see each other naked again, sigh

(The ‘again’ has less to do with any actual attempts at three-way sex–because they both hard veto’ed the one time Jester suggested it–and more to do with various beach incidents and probably one time with a corrosive slime monster, plus Jester thinking that public nudity is hilarious.)

Look there are many ways that poly works IRL and lord knows I love me some OT3′s, but the times I’ve actually seen committed lasting poly relationships work in person?  It’s looked like this.  All three relationships in this triangle are so very different, in terms of sex, emotion, balance, tone–but they all compliment each other really well.  Like, I look at Jester, Beau, and Fjord, and see a trio that could actually work, even in the face of argument and general relationship stress.

Jester already considers Beau and Fjord her two best favorite people!  Every time Jester instantly picks the two of them as the targets for a buff spell, or goes giant eagle and carries them both, or stands at the top of a giant tree and sketches them together in front of the landscape, my heart grows three sizes all over again.

I need you to picture Beau and Fjord high-fiving over how awesome their girl is as, like, a regular every-other-daily occurrence

Also Beau and Fjord teaming up to remind Jester that she matters and her problems also matter

Look.  Look.  Envision this: a small house near the beach in Nicodranas.  Beau drags Fjord outside to work out on the beach at sunrise, like, every fucking morning.  They come in and Jester has made pastries, with cinnamon, and coffee, and probably also bacon.  There are shrines to the Traveler and the Wildmother and also Beau has finally been forced to admit that she’s accumulated an entire goddamn library that now needs its own entire room.  Jester almost never repeats the same prank twice, but she switches the sugar for the coffee with salt a couple of times a year just to keep everybody on their toes anyway.

I’m rewatching C2E37 (again), and realized it’s the episode when Caleb wants to confront Fjord about the accent for the first time. He tries, but fails, and then Beau tells him not push Fjord about it because she thinks he’ll tell the group when he’s ready. 

We all know Beau and Caleb are very observant, and we know Beau is smarter than she pretends she is. So, we have two smart people who both care about the M9, and it’s interesting to see how they both deal with Fjord’s secrets.

Day 4 of Fjorester week: Jealousy

At nightime around the fireplace or during the watches Jester loves to braid her companion’s hair, it helps her (and them) relax.

Caduceus is her favourite, as his long mane leaves lots of space to creating intricate braids; Nott loves hers with flowers and beads entangled (Yasha loves flowers too); Caleb doesn’t even realize that someone is touching his hair when he is focused on his reading (and the tiefling takes advantage of the situation, creating the most “original” hairstyles for him); Beau always complains, but she loves it, and Jester knows that she does; and Fjord… with his short hair there is no way it can be braided, and he loathes it. He would love to feel Jester’s hands running through his scalp, her fingers lazily caressing his nape and giving him (and only him) all her attention. Fjord doesn’t want to admit it, but he is jealous of the rest of the mighty nine. So little by little he lets his hair grow long (and why not to try a beard too? Jester said it makes him look hot…) P.D.: Once it has grown enough it’s hard for Jester to keep her hands away from Fjord’s hair, specially the beard. Scratching it is somehow relaxing, so everytime they found themselves in a tense situation she reaches for it. It wins them more than a weird glare from the people they encounter.

Day 2 of Fjorester week: Touch Jester’s fingers caressing his scalp, the touch of her arms around him, the sweet smell of the tiefling… Nothing worked better to keep Fjord’s nigthmares at bay. And if something works, why change it? (Quick drawing for today, as I had no time to do anything proper on time. Also, I’ve slept 5 hours and drawing sleeping people makes me sleepier, and for some reason they don’t let me have a nap at the office)

You know what fantasy writing needs? Working class wizards.

A crew of enchanters maintaining the perpetual flames that run the turbines that generate electricity, covered in ash and grime and stinking of hot chilies and rare mushrooms used for the enchantments

A wizard specializing in construction, casting feather fall on every worker, and enchanting every hammer to drive nails in straight, animating the living clay that makes up the core of the crane

An elderly wizard and her apprentice who transmute fragile broken objects. From furniture, to rotten wood beams, to delicate jewelry

A battle magician, trained with only a few rudimentary spells to solve a shortage of trained wizards on the front who uses his healing spells to help folks around town

Wizarding shops where cheery little mages enchant wooden blocks to be hammered into the sides of homes. Hammer this into the attic and it will scare off termites, toss this in the fire and clean your chimney, throw this in the air and all dust in the room gets sucked up

Wizard loggers who transmute cut trees into solid, square beams, reducing waste, and casting spells to speed up regrowth. The forest, they know, will not be too harsh on them if the lost tree’s children may grow in its place

Wizard farmers who grow their crops in arcane sigils to increase yield, or produce healthier fruit

Factory wizards who control a dozen little constructs that keep machines cleaned and operational, who cast armor to protect the hands of workers, and who, when the factory strikes for better wages, freeze the machines in place to ensure their bosses can’t bring anyone new in.

Anyway, think about it.

Construction wizards to turn back time to root out wood worm and strengthen old buildings.

A wizard tailors who transmutes cloth into fully made clothes without seems and leaving behind no scraps

A wizard who works in public transit, timing out teleports with detailed schedules, time magic, and enchanted communications, sending dozens of people to far away cities for a day or work or leisure

A team of wizard gardeners tend to trees grown far outside their native range, and ideal climate, encircled with runes and fed potions to grow none the less

A wizard sits in their office in the aqueduct, re-casting the spells that allow its precious water to flow to the city uphill

A wizard fisher casts water repelling spells on the sailors and the stairs, keeps the hoist on the anchor from rusting, casts balls of heat that keep everyone warm below decks. Their real job is to herd fish together so they can be caught in single huge nets, and keep them cold as the boat returns to land.

There are so many possibilities outside of “stodgy academic who wears ugly robes” and “Very good holy man who helps everyone and the fact they’ve never had a job is never brought up” and “evil wizard toiling away on great evils in his evil tower in the evil country.”

They might be leaving the ocean for a while soon but this ship is still sailing strong and unstoppable.

Let me tell you guys, I was stressed out this holiday season thinking of all the ways things could go when we returned, it was a constant cycle of highs and lows for my little shipper heart: Fjord pinning (high!), Jester pulling away (low), Sunflower (high), You’re Someone Else (low), their answers on talks (both?)

But oh boy oh boy did this episode restore my fragile little soul with some much needed softness like:

I’ve seen it mentioned in a few posts but I don’t think Fjord sailing into the storm was impulsive.

Earlier, when he learned that Felderwin was attacked and Nott was from there, he said something along the lines of “that changes things” and made assurances to the group his quest wouldn’t take long and they could return to the Empire ASAP. And so when they hit that storm and Orly said it would take a few days to sail around, Fjord sailed into the storm. Not on an impulse, but because he had told his friends he would get them back home as quickly as possible and he didn’t want his quest taking any longer than necessary. As impulsive as Fjord is, I don’t think it’s fair to label that particular decision as impulsive

On an earlier Talks episode, you said Fjord hadn’t ever lied to Jester. But in the most recent episode he did lie to Jester about having another dream, and about his accent. Did he do that because others were there? If it would have just been her, would he have told her the truth?

Indifferent parent who pays their estranged offspring’s allowance like clockwork but otherwise prefers to deal with them as little as possible

Vast, slumbering god-monster and amoral parabiologist who knows which spots to poke with a stick to provoke particular autonomic responses
