this happened more recently to me, ran into my systems programming prof at the store at 11PM and he RECOGNIZED me there. like immediately knew who i was. even though i was with another friend who didn't have any classes with him he still came and said hi to me
i later saw him at the self checkout with a bouquet of roses, a slice of cake from the bakery section, and... a 20oz bottle of water
he was an interesting prof

Battletech/Mechwarrior vs Gundam is kind of an interesting proposition because they grew up in slightly different but related scifi milieus, and each made different decisions about what to do semi-realistically and where to sacrifice realism for the sake of cool robots.
Your basic Zaku is like the size and durability of an Assault Mech with the speed and maneuverability of a Light Mech, but only armed with something like an AC10 and a melee weapon in Battletech terms.
On land it would be terrifying, but Battletech space fighters are on a whole other level, basically Valkyries from Macross (sometimes literally).
On the non-mech side, Battletech has infantry in powered armor and tanks with lasers or PPCs, while Gundam ground troops, even decades after the One Year War, mostly use gear that wouldn’t look out of place in the Vietnam War, or even WWII.
Gundam spaceships tend to primarily rely on ECM, decoys, and point-defense guns to survive, and die in just a couple hits from each others’ weaponry, while Dropships and Warships in Battletech are balls of armor with engines on the bottom.
fun fact! a lot of the similarities to Macross can be traced back to the initial launch of BattleTech, which used a bunch of surplus Macross models that FASA founder Jordan Weisman found from a vendor at Gen Con in 1984. It was not long after this that BattleTech really took off, but eventually they had to get rid of the early models because of a lawsuit by Harmony Gold (the company that owned the Macross IP) in 1997 (more details and subsequent lawsuits are listed on the BattleTech Wiki). Nowadays those mechs are referred to as The Unseen, and some have been redesigned in-house, including the Locust, Shadow Hawk, Rifleman, Warhammer, and more.
Star Trek equivalent of a "Glup Shitto" is some obscure class of Federation starship that was only ever seen on screen for 0.68 seconds as a battle-damaged wreck at Wolf 359, but which somehow has a model from Eaglemoss, multiple, lengthy video essays discussing its lore, and an extremely vocal fan campaign by people demanding that it be made playable in Star Trek Online.
The USS Jupp was a kitbash studio model built by the VFX house hired by Paramount Pictures for special effects in the Star Trek: Deep Space

i love how the "battletech vs gundam" debate can be entirely resolved with the question "how many GMs (that are not one-offs) can fit an arm mounted particle cannon" and the answer is No
clearly the Panther is the superior warfighting mech /j
shoutout battletech for having so many Massive Fucking Cannon On The Arm™ mechs. just for PPCs we have:
the panther (the smallest of the bunch!)
the vindicator (medium mech)
catapult K2 (it has TWO of them!!)
and then there's all the mechs that have arm mounted autocannons which are probably more devastating. the urbanmech is so fucking funny in that regard, tiny ass trashcan that just has an AC-10 for no other reason than it is funny. that thing has the durability of a piece of wet cardboard and yet is still effective at lodging pieces of metal in inconvenient places
