In certain L-Viru social circles "to go on a walk" means "to go for a drive with your (favourite) car"
So a few days ago I witnessed a miracle.
I was waiting for a train in Tapa as many others were. The mood was like town name suggests* - quite morbid. It was cold and windy. However when the train arrived it played a little melody with it's horn. All people just smiled widely to their companions and even to strangers.
I have never witnessed so many smiling Estonians in one random place. Even sun came out for a moment.
*Tapa - k*ll (Estonian)
I believe this belongs here

How to recognize a foreigner in Estonian forest during foraging season?
They show their face. Sometimes say hello.
How to recogize an Estonian in Estonian forest during foraging season?
They quietly run away, so not to scare the mushrooms. And so should you. To each their own territory.
Spotting an Estonian in the autumnal forest is a difficult thing. Forager-estonian is very territorial. They are easily scared by other people and even pack members aka family members will try to stay away from eachother as much as possible and divide their territory for the hunt. If you want to talk to one of them, then all socialising should take place by the car or before entering/after exiting the forest.
Story time
About 10 yrs ago I was in a camp in Slovenia for 9 days. We, 3 Estonians, and 3 Latvians brought roughly 2 kilos of black bread, which we finished off by 5th day. On the 7th day we were in agony.
This summer I went to Sweden for 3 weeks. I brought 1,2 kilos of bread, just in case, I heard Sweden has some kind of rye bread, so I didn't worry much. Well, my cheap and picky ass was not happy with what I saw in stores and my 1,2 kilos disappeared by the middle of 2nd week.
Things I learned: never underestimate the amount of bread you need to take with you
The everyday of a bilingual
Some thoughts based on recent events:
Minorities deserve their freedom. One should never belittle their culture and traditions. More so attack them, both on personal and national level. We survive as well as we can in this globalising world. It's hard.
My nationality and citizen-ship are different things. I am often confused by my nationality, but I sure am Estonian citizen and I have never been more proud.
I am afraid. Afraid of what comes next in any scenario (whether Ukraine or Russia wins the war). Most of all I'm afraid of what happens to my family in Russia.
And I'm a coward, because I'm afraid that if I do anything via internet to help Ukraine, Russian hackers will find my relatives and harm them. I know there's a low possibility, but it's still there.
I have never been so careful with what I say, because every word that I utter could be turned against me. Just because I mostly identify as Russian.
Putin's brainwash is hard to come out of. Our family was one of the few that managed to do so back in 2014. If you couldn't get out then, then now would be extra difficult.
This post is most courageous thing I jave done I'm past two months. As I before said, I mostly live in fear...

Teadlasi ja ametnikke huvitab, kui palju on Eestis inimesi, kes peavad omaks kahte rahvust ja kahte emakeelt. Kuigi vastav teave on rahvasti
I feel offended. Finland was not allowed to show middle finger yet Germany had a giant one on stage
Finally that time of the year, when we can check whether relationships between (neighbouring) countries have changed and whether we can await some relationship drama later >:)
In future, when I'll be rich, I will buy an apartment on Joala st in Narva and it will be my in-city dacha.
How i define myself:
Estonian
Who is Russian
Who is partially Udmurtian
Who feels Estonian
Confirmed: Maxima is Estonian version of Walmart?
I don’t think maxima can compare to anything. I would go to walmart to fuck around. If my german friend was in usa we’d go to walmart like a tourist attraction. But you only go to maxima if youre not near a rimi, or if you’re passing through a small town and need something.
And walmart has a consistent product line yeah? You know the fabric section has linen here, cotton here. The cheese section has milk here, cheese here. The cars section has tyres here, wiper fluid here. You never know what the fuck is in maxima. Today I got granny pajama set for 5€. sometimes theres whole ass bins of childrens galoshes and the galoshes arent tied or marked together. sometimes theres just entire bins of bar soap. maxima just exists in its own plane of reality
I just found some nice plates in maxima. Like sometimes you find super cool stuff there. But every maxima is different.
you can visit five different maximas in a day and find different things
Maxima is like Room of Requirement in Harry Potter. Before you enter Maxima, think about what you want, and enter. It should appear before you. However you must decide on purchase right then and there. Otherwise the items you need disappear by the next time you remember they were once in Maxima. And they are never seen again....
