there’s something so loving about what tom björklund does and just- fuck I’m foaming at the mouth here

facial reconstruction isn’t a new concept (see the Kennewick Man/Patrick Stewart incident) but it’s difficult to find people that are truly good at it! genuinely there is a big gap in this field because there just aren’t a lot of people who do it professionally!

facial reconstruction, especially from bone or bone fragments, is such a fascinating intersection of art and science, and a tremendous amount of care is put into determining what these people might have looked like.

with that said, it’s VERY easy to screw it up

configuring muscle attachments and fat distribution is genuinely *very* difficult to do, and when you do it badly, you get this (pictured above). by adding too much muscle, they gave this 600 year old man a VERY interesting jawline (notice that the bottom of the chin doesn’t match up with the bone at all!) and they *really* made him look older than he was. would you believe me if I said that he was estimated to only be 46 years old?

basically I’m just REALLY excited about Tom Björklund’s art because it’s amazing work, just from an anthropology perspective

facial reconstructions aren’t just an artsy thing that you can just say “oh, that’s cool!” to

by giving these people faces, even if they aren’t always accurate, we open the doors for the average person to connect with the past at a very human level. sure, looking at bones is cool, but looking at art of someone that lived millions of years ago is *incredible*

looking at a picture of a boy that lived millions of years ago and thinking “yeah, he would’ve loved Minecraft” is EXACTLY the reaction that these pieces are meant to elicit

Horror film made by Navajo siblings finally arrives in theaters

"The Red Hogaan" is a horror film about a Navajo family that is menaced by a skinwalker while driving a sheep herd up a mountain.

FARMINGTON — It's been nearly five years since Navajo filmmaker Kody Dayish of Shiprock and his siblings Kolette and Kolin completed their first feature film, "The Red Hogaan."

Exposure for the horror movie — a tale about a Navajo family that is menaced by a skinwalker while driving its sheep herd up a mountain — has been hard to come by. Dayish has been working since the film's release to get it screened in theaters, but it wasn't until last weekend that he finally achieved his goal.

"The Red Hogaan" made its commercial theatrical debut at a cinema in Kayenta, Arizona, on Jan. 15. The event nearly sold out the auditorium, which was limited to 50% capacity because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Dayish said it was a happy but nerve-racking experience for him as he watched the audience take in the film. He even went so far as to keep track of the number of "jump scares" the film elicited.

Have any of you heard of the Harvard MIT Pigeon Prank?

An MIT student dressed in a black-and-white striped shirt went to the Harvard football stadium every day of one summer, blowing a whistle while scattering breadcrumbs or birdseed to coax neighborhood pigeons down onto the field. At Harvard’s opening game of the season, upon the referee’s first whistle, it’s said that hundreds of pigeons descended onto the field, causing a half-hour delay.

The project and each individual image is intended to encourage society to think about itself, its own body, about acceptance. For diversity and against beauty ideals (advertising) and all the environs for the exterior. I advocate in this work for self-love and acceptance of one’s own body, as well as the acceptance of others with their peculiarities.

It’s also an excellent illustration of the absurdity of our default clothed habits. Even if you’re not able to overcome the wider cultural taboo of nudity, why wear clothes at home when it’s not cold? What purpose do clothes serve when you’re just sat at a computer or watering your plants? You don’t need protection from clothing most of the time. Indeed sometimes, like doing yoga, they’re just a hindrance! 

Being naked should be normal; we all have bodies, and they are far both far more diverse and far more alike than the media representation of bodies would have so many believe. I think we’d all be happier healthier people if we weren’t so scared of our own physical forms.
