Good to see you again, will gladly wait for the full version (really enjoyed the demo), no need to be sorry for the delay, making a VN take a lot of time and effort and even funding VN get delayed, sometime even for years ^_^. Hope you will be able to post a bit more regularly even if there isn't much to say.

Thank you SO much for your kind words! I am more or less working on it - to be fair, I’ve worked on a(nother) prologue that goes before when Ego Holic takes place. Please look forward to it as well!

Hey guys, as you can see, Ego Holic still hasn’t been released. You can expect a release at the end of 2018 or maybe even later. I’m sorry.

What is Ego Holic? Ego Holic is a dark BL (Boys Love/BxB) Visual Novel on the supernatural side, currently in development by qb;studios. This game will be rated 18+ for NSFW content (warnings for language, blood, adult themes) as well as a PG15 version (can be changed in the preferences).

Story:

In the big bustling city Elón, the rich can fulfill their dreams, the middle class is well off, and Espers hunt down illegitimate magical users on witch-hunts. So, just like any other city. Leonard Honeywell, a broke witch with no warrant to use magic, stumbles upon an antiquarian bookstore and becomes an employee under… weird circumstances. Minding his own business, he tries to flee from his past and find a reason in life. But nobody knows about the Gate that opened, or why Leonard got booted from the Academy (supposedly for killing a fellow student), or that his boss is giving out mysterious tomes for free to people who come to his bookstore. Next to getting grey hair over this management, Leonard gets to know a lot of people - people who aren’t rich. People who can’t fulfill their dreams. People who get hunted. People who are still yearning for something. The whole game will feature:

~50-60k words (estimate)

unique storytelling with complex choices

map system lets you choose how to spend your break time

3 love interests

5 endings

15+ CGs

10+ tracks of atmospheric music (by rico chet)

Sorry for the lack of update last week, but due to work, progresswas minimal. Hooray for more backgrounds! Soon enough, I can start posting actual screenshots.

I’ve been working a lot on BGs and coded the main menu, and also designed new GUI. The main menu changes upon choices (and consequences) made in-game, the saying/line on top changes with every start of the game (not a NG). The picture of the protagonist will change upon completion of one route.

Aaaaand another little snippet from my soundtrack to @ego-holic. Ego-Holic will have songs for specific locations, but also themes for major characters. This is an excerpt of what will be the theme for the twins.

The twins work at the antiquarian bookshop and are waaaaay older than you would assume. Therefore, I’ve decided to use mainly instruments that would have been used in baroque or classical music, such as a harpsichord, a cello and woodwinds.

However, the twins also have a juvenile and sly streak that is not only apparent in the discordant notes and stingy pizzicatos, but also in the inclusion of a rather modern instrument: the synthesizer. To fit in with the “antique” setting, I’ve decided to go for a vintage synth sound, specifically the Minimoog from 1970, arguably the Stradivari of synthesizers. Sadly, I can’t afford one, so I’ve used a software emulation it instead. Synthesizers in popular music often sound rather unrefined, so I tried to make it sound smoother and more like a brass instrument. Or at least what keyboarders in the 1970s would have used when they wanted a brass sound.

The song itself is in a faux-baroque style, but with more dissonant notes and stranger chord progressions than would have been appropriate in the 17th century. Actually, the very first draft of this song was pretty close to Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”, but then I’ve changed a lot of the chords and harmonies and…now it probably bears very little resemblance to it.

It’s also inspired by the works of Wendy Carlos, a synthesizer pioneer that made synthesizers popular in the 1960s/1970s by playing classical and baroque music with it. Her “Switched-On Bach” (1968) is definitely one of my favourite classical albums and got me into working with synthesizers.
