âYou⊠you donât get to hurt her." Phosâs words were icy, venom lacing each syllable.Without warning, Phos moved with blinding speed, their form a blur of fury and moonlight. The gem barely had time to react before Phos was upon them, using every ounce of their power in a flurry of strikes; each one a manifestation of the anger that had built up over the years.

Like drawing. That was something you never tired of.
Your pencil glided across the page, capturing delicate lines and intricate details. You had lost track of how much time had passed. Minutes? Hours? But the rhythm of sketching calmed you. And tonight, your knew exactly what you wanted to create.
Line by line, curve by curve, the image began to take shape. Sleek lines and surfaces, and the ever-present glow that clung to them like moonlight itself.

âAnd Iâll keep reminding you until you believe it.â For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, slowly, their fingers curled beneath your touch, holding on, just a little. ââŠThank you,â they murmured. Their head dipped slightly, indigo hair brushing against your shoulder as they lingered close. âNo oneâs ever⊠said that to me before.â
âWell,â you whispered, feeling warmth spread through your chest despite the cold, âI guess Iâll have to say it more often.â

The first time Nana sees Hachi again, itâs almost ridiculous how easy it is.
Sheâs standing in front of a bakery, of all places, the soft glow of the shop lights catching in her hair, making it look gold instead of brown. Sheâs smiling. Of course she is, because sheâs Hachi. But thereâs something about the way she tilts her head, her fingers tightening around the handle of her shopping bag, that makes Nana realize sheâs hesitating.
Like she might walk away.
Like she thinks she should.
So Nana breaks the silence. "What, you're just gonna stand there?"
Hachi startles, and for a second, Nana thinks sheâs about to run anyway. But then, she breathes out a soft, disbelieving laugh. "NanaâŠ?" Her voice is quieter than Nana remembers, but it still hits her like a punch to the chest.
"Yeah, who else?" Nana leans against the lamppost, cigarette burning low between her fingers.
"You got a good taste in desserts, Hachiko." Hachi blinks, then follows Nanaâs gaze to the box in her bagâstrawberry shortcake. Itâs stupidly on-brand, and something about that cracks the tension between them. She rolls her eyes, but there's warmth in it. "Youâre still smoking those awful things, huh?"
"And you're still eating sugar like it's a food group."
Hachi bites her lip, like she wants to say something else, something heavier, but instead, she just shifts on her feet. âUm⊠do you want to share it?â She lifts the bag slightly, like an offering, and Nana canât tell if itâs guilt or something softer making her do it.
She should say no. She should walk away. She should let Hachi live the life she chose.
But instead, she takes one last drag of her cigarette, drops it, and crushes it under her heel.
"Yeah," she mutters, voice rough, "I could eat."
And just like that, they start walking.
Itâs not like nothing happened.
Itâs not like years didnât pass between them like ghosts in an empty apartment.
But for now, under the Tokyo streetlights, itâs enough.
