Attack on Titan Episode 1
Okay, now, there were many things great about this episode, but here are some really deep thinkers that I liked.
Number One: Notice how when Mikasa reveals Erens intentions to join the Recon Corps to his parents, his mother freaks out like any self respecting mother would and is like “Oh god, oh god, oh god, my son is gonna die.” But that’s not the important part. No, the important part is Erens dad, Dr. Jaeger (who has an awesome name, let’s say) just sits there. You can tell he’s sad, He’s probably thinking my son might die, and no matter all my skills in medicine and healing, he might come back, and I might not be able to save him. Yet, rather than go down the typical route of forbidding him, he knows he can do nothing to stop it. He knows that when curiosity raises its head, its not meant to be stopped. Its meant to be encouraged, and the only thing you can do is protect the curious person, whether they be man or child. So, he decides to take Eren down to the basement and show him how to properly defend himself (assumption) so he can satisfy his curiosity, and go see the outside world. This is what any true and decent father should do: rather than being over protective of something good and natural, encourage but take it cautiously.
Number two: Hannes. Okay, Hannes, despite the fact he ran away from the titan who killed Erens mom, is a true representation of most humans. In most typical anime, movies, books, stories, etc. the soldier would die doing his duty and trying to defend the innocent as per his oath. It would be one of those typically epic, heroic moments that make us feel all warm and giddy inside, and be like yeah, this is awesome, humans can do anything, we’re invincible. Does that Happen?

He basically stares into that lovely, gorgeous face right there, and goes f*** this, I’m out. So, he turns tail and runs, exactly what most humans would do. Most humans, even if they tried, would not be able to defeat this monster. I know I wouldn’t. I get angry, I have an ego a mile wide, yet if I stared up at this sucker, I would turn tail and run with my tail between my legs. Yet, he knows there is one thing he cannot leave behind, and that’s the future, the hopes of humanity: the children Eren and Mikasa. And this moment, ignites that fires of Erens hatred that will forge him into the sword that will be used, the weapon of mankinds anger and helplessness to destroy the Titans. But now, back to Hannes. So, the act of saving Mikasa and Eren turns this from an act of cowardice to rather an act of practicality: it is the utter realization that we are not invincible, and we are certainly NOT GODS. It is the simple fact that, “we are only human, and despite all our power we couldn’t even save one little girl.” -Edward Elric (paraphrased) This reminds me exactly of the quote with Edward Elric, when he discusses the death of Nina Tucker. For yes, we are in the end, only human.
Number Three: Now, okay, let’s talk about Mrs. Jaeger. Particularly in the end, before she dies. Right after Hannes takes away Mikasa and Eren, you can see her put her head in her hands and weep, knowing the fate that awaits her. And she utters the words under her breath, “Don’t go.” For despite the fact she wanted Eren and Mikasa to live, she was so afraid of the fate that awaited. Yet, she gave up her sense of fear, of self, and of anguish, to save her children. She knew she had to die, but all she wanted to do was not die alone. She wanted someone to be with her at the end. Yet, she gives that up so her children, the two children she loves like a true mother, may survive. She is one of the best mothers I’ve ever seen for that act. Let’s not forget that a lot of our mothers would do that for us: it is a primordial reaction.
