note from one year ago: i'm compiling this post on the evening of May 14, 2025 to document the heartbreak and the insanity that has visited upon us today following the abrupt cancellation of KHML. we loved, we lost...and we got a lot of memes about balconies.

i'm scheduling this to post on May 14, 2026, and i'm really hoping that by then, circumstances will be better and we'll have something happy to look forward to as a fandom. in the meantime, the kind words and the wonderful art you all share will get us through it.

So this one time I was in a hospital recovering from an emergency surgery on my leg, and had to be there long enough that they had to change my bedding, so, doped up on three kinds of pain meds and antibiotics my dad wheels me into the hallway while the nurses work.

"dad" I say, my eyes barely open "it's Colonel Sanders" while pointing down the hallway. He looks, and at the end of the hallway, there's a portrait of an old man, the donor who paid for the wing of the hospital I'm recovering in.

My dad explains as much to me, and goes "I mean the guy *kinda* looks like him, but why would Colonel Sanders pay for a hospital wing Mississauga Ontario? I think those drugs might me messing with you"

Then the nurse comes out of the room. I go "hey, who is that picture of?"

She looks at the portrait. She looks at me. She looks at my dad. She looks at the painting. She looks at me again.

"you don't recognize the Colonel??"

i rock w abusive parent characters but i roll my eyes when it’s like ‘my mom is so mean she won’t let me play soccer she won’t let me even let me look at a soccer ball or an image of a soccer ball because she really wants to make me play tennis instead and when i accidentally mention soccer she handcuffs me and locks me in my room for the rest of the day!’ and it’s played like the mom just needs to ✨open her eyes ✨and ✨become more accepting and progressive ✨and not like she needs to go to jail. because she’s poorly based on a mildly sucky real person who doesn’t need to go to jail

"I hate how American media will just make up a European nation rather than do any research, so I'm going to get back at them by writing a story set in a fake American state" like, do you have the slightest idea how much American media is set in a geographically impossible fictional small town located in no particular state and characterised entirely by some guy from Los Angeles' collection of half-remembered stereotypes about the American Midwest? They've already got the "lazily inventing fictional parts of America" bit locked down.

No, if you want to play the Uno reverse card on American media, what you need to do isn't to make up a fake state: you specifically need to wilfully misrepresent southern California.
