What is everybody’s favorite symbolism found in The Hunger Games Series?
This is always a question I love asking fellow fans. For me (and maybe this has already been discussed at length here), it has hands down got to be the Everlark kiddos. I love the fact that their mixed features visually symbolize the end of the Merchant/Seam divide in District 12, which of course is a microcosm of the dismantling of the games that their parents kick-started. The fact that Everlark is the inverse of Burdock and Asterid is also not lost on me, and I find even more symbolism there. Despite their similar merging, we know that they basically got one of each in Katniss and Prim and thus did not see the visual manifestation…yet. I believe this shows how even though there were concerted efforts to tear down these various systems/customs prior, sometimes it takes generations to bear the fruit. And lo and behold, their daughter and son-in-law did just that. I get emotional if I think about this too much, same with that damn pearl.

The camera finds her in the crowd, clinging to two other girls. All blond. All definitely merchants' kids.
"I think that's your mother hugging her," says Peeta quietly. And he's right.
Holding her hand and weeping is another girl who looks just like Maysilee. But a lot like someone else I know, too.
"Madge," I say.
"That's her mother. She and Maysilee were twins or something," Peeta says. "My dad mentioned it once."
Had a response all typed out in response to someone arguing that Katniss chose Peeta because he was safe, and she was too traumatized and autistic to have romantic feelings. Rather than be an ass and blow up some stranger’s post, I’ll just comment here. And as I’ve said before when this suggestion was made, while we want to see ourselves in a character, the plain text does not support this argument.
The safe choice was Gale. Period. They had shared interests, shared backgrounds. Their families knew each other. She’d been hunting with him for 5 years. He was predictable. A marriage to him, at least before she became a victor, would have been a logical, obvious choice. But to read these books and still come away with the feeling that she wasn’t attracted to Peeta makes no sense. Who keeps tabs on someone you don’t talk to? Who takes notice of how someone’s hair falls in waves over his forehead, and the details of his eyelashes? I met my ex-husband in 2005 and I couldn’t tell you a thing about his lashes to this day. She calls him shiny. She calls him beautiful. She dreams about him. She keeps momentos from him. She describes the time in the cave as a happy time even as they were on the verge of death. She tells him she needs him and MAKES HIM STOP TALKING SO SHE CAN KEEP KISSING HIM. She is devastated when she believes he no longer loves her. Like, what?
The aroace implications are in the same category as Everthorne to me when it comes to these books. It is contraindicated by the text and the author herself. I have no opinion about her being autistic because that does not obviate the possibility that Katniss would be romantically attracted to someone even if she finds social interactions difficult. I find that take limiting and not borne out by what I see in real life as a disability rights lawyer. She loves that boy, in every sense of the word.

Something about how the silver parachutes in the Hunger Games are used to deliver the sponsor gifts for the tributes, and those same parachutes are used as decoys holding bombs that would slaughter children and civilians of the Capitol.
Something about how that was the last action of President Coin before she declared an official ‘symbolic’ Hunger Games.
Gale thought it was a stretch to say that if you can justify killing in the way he intended to for the war, you can justify anything, including sending children off to an arena. But we see, that symbolically and effectively, it was the same thing. Children were rounded up in the town square and sacrificed as retribution and equalization, and the same device was used in both of their slaughters. And both times, they were disguised as gifts.

I've managed to get my only two friends who hadn't read/seen The Hunger Games to watch the movies, and one's still on the first one, but the other just finished Catching Fire. So when Gale kisses Katniss at the beginning, my friend sent me a video, super offended, like, "HE JUST KISSED HER. WHAT IS HE DOING?" I love her.
