Ruby, her friends, and Oscar had all left the secret chamber hidden underneath Beacon Academy and had climbed their way out of the crater they’d entered it from. Ruby was standing out among the ruins of the campus right next to where everyone had left their backpacks piled up. Her right hand was clasped over her wrist, and she was squeezing hard enough to feel her good luck charm and its chain biting into the palm of her hand. A strange mixture of emotions was bubbling inside of her, but more than anything else, she was feeling apprehensive. Something wasn’t quite right, although she had no idea what. She supposed that staring out at what was left of the school she’d once planned on attending wasn’t helping her mood.
Another thing that wasn’t helping Ruby’s mood was Oscar. He was standing nearby, essentially moping. He clearly wasn’t pleased that Weiss had found a way to get at the Maidens’ powers, and Ruby had to admit that she sympathized. Oscar obviously didn’t want another Maiden War to happen, and despite Ruby’s earlier decisiveness, she herself still wasn’t sure if she really wanted to be a Maiden. She could feel the power slumbering inside of her. It didn’t feel bad per se, but it also didn’t feel good. It was just there.
The sound of a frigid wind blowing suddenly rose up and drew Ruby’s attention away from her quiet dilemma. She turned and saw Weiss standing a short distance away from her with a solemn look on her face. Magic was flaring out of Weiss’s eyes, and her dress was being blown about by a wind swirling around her. The unnatural air currents were carrying tiny particles of ice with them, and the frozen specks were twinkling in the afternoon sun. Despite Ruby’s sour mood, she couldn’t help but smile. Weiss was already beautiful, and the magic and ice surrounding her only enhanced her allure.
