Hell (2/15/18)
I imagine hell was more like purgatory when it started. But once its population exceeded one, hell as we know it began. There were no demons and Satan does not exist beyond his presence in every individual. The rules of hell are simple. The only joy one can feel is that which comes from malevolence and sadism. Therefore if its occupants could merely refrain from torturing one another, no one would suffer. It would simply match the dreary boredom of purgatory. However, this is not man’s way. In fact, it was inevitable that once a second occupant arrived, so too would the first demon. The first transgression could be purely accidental as its occupants remain blissfully unaware of their lot. It is the fate of every new entrant to become a demon. For who could bear such suffering without casting it back onto another? Nor does the suffering ever dull. With each new demon spawned, the magnitude is felt by all. How couldn’t it be? For each new occupant is dropped into an increasingly hotter stew with no graduation, creating a soul more twisted than any of its predecessors.
