Always always always tell people you love they are so smart and capable. I will die on this hill. More often than not people are raised in unforgiving environments that tell them they are inherently “stupid” and not good enough for things, whether that be parents or cruel bosses or unsupportive friends. An underrated way of supporting people is reminding them they are brilliant no matter what anyone has ever said about their intellect and potential. People can do wonders when it’s affirmed to them their limiting beliefs are just that: limiting beliefs.

One of the things that makes Ethel Cain’s use of the southern gothic so good is the way she gives the opportunity for the characteristics of the rural south that are usually looked down upon (mainly the poverty) an opportunity to morph itself into its own unique perspective of beauty that supersedes any stereotypes that were created.

And while this isn’t my personal aesthetic preference (nor am I even from the Deep South) I do deeply value the art of creation out of the old, abandoned, or mildly unpleasant because it helps reshape the experience you had while there. Maybe not into more of an objective one (given that this is also creating a different narrative) but one that provides at times, a genuinely more positive outlook on your life despite it being not at its finest point.

Probably not what I should’ve gathered from her use of southern gothic (especially since preachers daughter is a cautionary tale) but it’s something I think of in pieces that contrast feelings of misery with aesthetics—if done well it’s not romanticization entirely but it’s hope. Just my personal, though perhaps slightly misguided interpretation

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

if you're sitting on a fanfic idea because you think it's "too weird" or "too niche" I need you to understand something: the internet is VAST and FULL of people with your exact brand of weird. that crackship that makes sense only to you? there are at least 50 people who will read it and go "oh my god FINALLY." but even if there were ZERO? you still deserve to write the thing that makes your brain light up.

me: well, I don't know how many times a day the average person pees. the relevant data I have is that I am currently on a medication that helps me have to pee less often, and also that before I was on this medication, I had to pee a number of times per day that I personally found frustrating and inconvenient, although I often think that some degree of that is due to our society not being built to accommodate people who need to pee really often.

healthcare provider: most people pee between four and seven times a day.

me: oh yeah then I'm totally normal.

online numbers can really fuck you up when it comes to your creative work because you're sharing something you worked on with all your heart but it's very important to remember there's actual people behind those numbers. even if it's 1. that's one whole actual person. that's a human being who said "haha nice". that's a connection with a REAL person with a REAL life and REAL thoughts and feelings and experiences. like. damn. that should mean something

httyd arranged marriage au where astrid shows up to berk fully prepared to murder whoever her husband ends up being and ruling on her own. she's got no faith that this guy is going to respect her or even be a competent leader.

hiccup doesn't want to get married, has repeatedly said so infact. very publicly said so. but stoick is worried about his line of succession and insists upon it. hiccup is praying that his future wife will want to rule, because no way in hell is he doing that

they don't have any actual interactions until the night of their wedding where, before astrid can threaten hiccup even once, he's asking her if she has any leadership experience (obviously she does). he then offers the throne to her so that he can fly off the edge of the world or something (astrid didn't quite catch what he said, something about mapping the whole world and a trader?)

this arrangement goes great, but they don't really spend any time in the same house or doing any other husband and wife things, which leads people to thinking there is some kind of weakness/tension between the two.

so someone tries to assasinate astrid.

she would've had everything under control, but before she can kill the guy, hiccup (who no-one has seen in close on two months) bursts into the room and slices the guys head off or something. hiccup then apologises for stepping on her thunder, stating that 'he was mean to my cousin, i've been looking for the guy for ages'
