One of my favorite parts of Dragon Age II Act One is the poor Fereldon refugees ready to fuck Hawke’s shit up because they were looking for Anders. Fereldon refugees were ready to kick some ass to defend their apostate healer.

“We know what happens to mages in this town!” one cries.

They weren’t going to fucking stand for it.

I wish it had been brought up more often. I wish we got to hear what the refugees thought about Anders’s actions.

I like to believe that when he fled Kirkwall, they helped him and they passed the word so he had help in every town he went.

“My cousin, Sheryl, she had that wet cough. You helped her,” a young woman would murmur as she led Anders to her hearth to warm up. “Sheryl.. Yes, I remember. Did she finish that quilt? She was so upset she couldn’t work on it for her friend’s birthday,” he’d reply.

“My niece was too thin, too frail. The Chantry there… They didn’t care for their Darktown folk, did they?” an old man asked, knowing the answer as he shared his meal with his guest. “She would have died in childbirth, but you… Thank you.”

“My brother would have lost his leg,”whispers a mother of three.

“We didn’t even realize they were sick,” says a man overlooking a gaggle of orphans.

“I was a child all those years ago, and I would have died,” says the newly married woman.

How many stories are out there? How many families affected? Who sings the songs for the Darktown Healer? Who leaves their lanterns lit for their apostate Warden?

I really needed to do some low stress drawing tonight, so here’s Aveline teaching Anders to fight with a sword.  

There’s some really cute (but unfortunately cut) banter that involves Aveline giving sword fighting lessons to the whole cast, and her interaction with Anders made me smile.
