Queliot Holiday Stories? Why yes, we do have those!

So it turned out that last year I did NOT manage to read all of the Magicians Hallmark Holiday Extravaganza collection, and I still have new stories to read this year! Woot! (I’m cleaning, baking with the kids, holiday music playing, trying to make this happen!) 

This event, and the resulting collection, were a fantastic part of our fandom last year. If you missed out, or just want to revisit, I recommend you check it out. (Thanks, @themagicianshhe!)

Let’s see… a favorite that I read last year, A (Gingerbread) House that we can Build by mtothedestiel (hey, @summersteve!) with art by @eliotsvests, was really excellent, and would be a great place to start. 

Oh, and also, I know I’ve recced this before (and made unsolicited art,) but I really loved I’ll Follow My Secret Heart by @orchardsinsnow, which is a very charming, secular, snowed-in holiday story where the fellas meet for the first time. This one wasn’t part of the MHEA, and I don’t think it should be missed. 

Will I have time to read anything in the next week? Maaaaybe… i can hope!

for wednesday, some noodled-about future fic, ft. Quentin In His Thirties:

Sometimes he thinks that if he went back to himself at — any day before Brakebills, really; usually when he goes through this hypothetical he pictures himself the week before he started, spiraling faster than he wanted to admit, or else at sixteen, in the hospital or maybe just released, allegedly improved but secretly convinced that his life was over before it had even begun — if he gave that sad kid a preview of his future; if he told him that magic was real, and it was his; that he would go to Fillory and he would come to hate Fillory and later he’d learn to love it again because his close personal friend and occasional sex partner the democratically elected and then re-elected High King had worked to make it as good as it deserved to be; that a beautiful girl would fall in love with him, and they would break each other’s hearts over and over, and one day they would sit in a library carrel copying down potentially relevant Icelandic runes for the work project he was helping her out with and everything else they had been to each other would seem only lovely, and far away, and very young; that he would fall in love with a boy, a whole lifetime’s worth of it, and the boy would break his heart so deeply when he died it would feel like already he had set one foot in the grave, but they would get a second chance, and this time neither of them would let go; that it would feel like a miracle to wake up every day next to the person whose smile was like the sun and into the life they had somehow made — sometimes he thinks that if he told some younger Quentin all that, his past self would still think that the craziest fucking thing about his life now is that sometimes he runs six miles just because he wants to.
