it did not. it is public knowledge the slave trade worked like this

and in fighting antiblackness within canada and europe it is so so so important to acknowledge these places's participation in and benefit from the transantlantic slave trade. Slavery is not just the US's dirty past, it is a triangular industry lasting centuries that white people in the united states, canada, and europe benefitted from and continue to benefit from to this day. Slavery was good for white canadians and white europeans. They liked it. they encouraged it. they had slaves, they profited from the slave trade, and they used products grown from US slave labour in every day life. The slavery of Black people would not have been possible on the sheer scale at which it happened if it were not for active, consistent participation from europe and canada.

Suffering cannot and should not become vital to our culture. To any culture, really. Its not about suffering. Its about loving. Its about community. Its about growing as friends and familes. Its about being who we are. It's important to acknowledge the suffering, yes, it cannot be ignored. Suffering needs to be addressed so it can be alleviated if not outright eliminated. It's not a requirement. Its a societal adversary. Its like smallpox.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

The rise in antisemitism in the last few years is awful. I wish I could do more about it.

I'm not Jewish. I say that because unfortunately it feels like that needs to be clarified - and not in a "so I can't speak directly to the impact of this because it's not my story so you should listen to those who are being affected" (that's still true and you should do it) but because part of the antisemitism is dismissing Jewish people when they bring it up.

And I imagine this post will get me a lot of messages/responses about freeing Palestine - and I agree, lots of horrible things are happening to Palestinians. But this post is about the horrible things that are happening to Jewish people.

I'm Canadian. The things I read about antisemitic hate crimes have nothing to do with helping Palestinians. How does damaging property in Canada or attacking a person in Canada help?

I don't want to hear about the mental gymnastics or outright hateful logic you use to make it ok to attack a marginalized community. Instead, just go head and block me. Stop following. We don't need to interact with each other.

The harm that is being done toward Jewish communities and individuals over the world is heartbreaking. The lack of support/outrage/solidarity that is being shown to those individuals and communities is shameful for the rest of us. Call it out. Stand up. Correct information that is harmful. Listen and read and learn and try to understand instead of scratching your head and finding reasons for why this kind of aggression and discrimination is ok actually.

And if you're Jewish and reading this - hi, welcome. I don't know enough and I'll probably miss some things as I'm still learning, but I hope following me can be safe for you.

Yes, I have been running the newsletter ever since then! There are no recent mentions of it on my blog because it ended in May, and I've already taken down the most recent pinned FAQ post, but we're still reading, and we'll start reading again in September.

I don't know if you were reading it during the first edition or later, so maybe you don't know - I had to change the format, because in 2023-2024, TinyLetter shut down, and I couldn't find a replacement platform that met all our requirements (it was always a word limit that was too low or a subscriber limit that didn't allow enough people, or uhhhh copyright related stuff LMAO). So from 2024 on, we've been reading it like this (taken from my FAQ post):

You can access/download the whole newsletter - September 15th to May 26th - as an .odt file, as a .pdf file, and most importantly as an .epub file, because I assume most of you are reading on your phones (if you don’t already have an .epub reader, I use FBReader, and everything worked fine on my phone). At the beginning you’ll find the whole table of contents with hyperlinks, so the navigation inside the document should be easy! The MEGA folder can be accessed right here, and it’s available for everyone! In the folder linked, you’ll also find a calendar file made by @none-ofthisnonsense that you can download on your phone and import into your calendar app so that all days when we read are marked in your calendar! If you want to receive notifications about when there is an entry to read, you can also follow @is-today-a-lotr-newsletter-day and turn on notifications! This is a blog created solely for notifying you all when we’re reading a new fragment of the newsletter, so all notifications you’ll get will be about new entries, and nothing more. The notifications are meant to be the equivalent of sending e-mails.
